COMMONWEALTH OF MASSACHUSETTS DEPARTMENT OF TELECOMMUNICATIONS AND CABLE ) In re Verizon Service Quality in Westem Massachusetts ) D.T.C. 09-1 ) SETTLEMENT AGREEMENT THIS SETTLEMENT AGREEMENT ("Agreement") is entered into this C- day of November, 2010, by and among the Office of the Attorney General of Massachusetts ("Attomey General"), Verizon New England Inc., d/b/a Verizon Massachusetts ("Verizon MA"), Local 2324, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, AFL-CIO ("Local 2324") and the Towns of Hancock, Egremont and Leverett (the "Parties"). WHEREAS, Verizon MA is an incumbent local exchange carrier in the area served by the 413 area code, also known as LATA 126 ("Westem Massachusetts"); WHEREAS, on June 1, 2009 the Massachusetts Department of Telecommunications and Cable ("Departmenf) opened the above-captioned proceeding ("Proceeding") as an investigation regarding the reasonableness of Verizon Massachusetts' telephone service quality in Western Massachusetts, pursuant to G.L. c. 159, § 16; WHEREAS, the Department and the Parties conducted extensive, foiTnal discovery in the Proceeding, and the Department held evidentiary hearings in Northampton and Boston in which the Parties submitted extensive testimony and supporting exhibits. WHEREAS, the Parties have raised competing and disputed claims with regard to Verizon MA's service quality in Westem Massachusetts but wish to resolve those matters on mutually agreeable terms, and without establishing any new precedent or principle applicable to any other proceedings; WHEREAS, the Parties have agreed that a negotiated resolution is in the public interest since it will provide consumer benefits; and, WHEREAS, the Parties have conducted lengthy negotiations and have reached an agreement intended to ensure that Verizon's service quality in Westem Massachusetts is just, reasonable, safe, adequate and proper under G.L. -

VI. THE STEREO ERA In 1954, a timid and uncertain record industry took the plunge to begin investing heav- ily in stereophonic sound. They were not timid and uncertain because they didn’t know if their system would work – as we have seen, they had already been experimenting with and working the kinks out of stereo sound since 1932 – but because they still weren’t sure how to make a home entertainment system that could play a stereo record. Nevertheless, they all had their various equipment in place, and so that year they began tentatively to make recordings using the new medium. RCA started, gingerly, with “alternate” stereo tapes of monophonic recording sessions. Unfortunately, since they were still uncertain how the results would sound on home audio, they often didn’t mark and/or didn’t file the alternate stereo takes properly. As a result, the stereo versions of Charles Munch’s first stereo recordings – Berlioz’ “Roméo et Juliette” and “Symphonie Fanastique” – disappeared while others, such as Fritz Reiner’s first stereo re- cordings (Strauss’ “Also Sprach Zarathustra” and the Brahms Piano Concerto No. 1 with Ar- thur Rubinstein) disappeared for 20 years. Oddly enough, their prize possession, Toscanini, was not recorded in stereo until his very last NBC Symphony performance, at which he suf- fered a mental lapse while conducting. None of the performances captured on that date were even worth preserving, let alone issuing, and so posterity lost an opportunity to hear his last half-season with NBC in the excellent sound his artistry deserved. Columbia was even less willing to pursue stereo. -

Program Notes MONTANA CHAMBER MUSIC SOCIETY October 30, 2015, 7:30pm Reynolds Recital Hall, MSU Bozeman, 7:30pm MUIR STRING QUARTET Peter Zazofsky, violin Lucia Lin, violin Steven Ansell, viola Michael Reynolds, cello with guest Michele Levin, piano Quartet for Strings in C Minor, Quartettsatz, D. 703 (1820) FRANZ SCHUBERT [1797-1828] [Duration: ca. 10 minutes] "Picture to yourself," he wrote to a friend at this time, "a man whose health can never be reestablished, who from sheer despair makes matters worse instead of better; picture to yourself, I say, a man whose most brilliant hopes have come to nothing, to whom proffered love and friendship are but anguish, whose enthusiasm for the beautiful — an inspired feeling, at least— threatens to vanquish entirely; and then ask yourself if such a condition does not represent a miserable and unhappy man.... Each night, when I go to sleep, I hope never again to waken, and every morning reopens the wounds of yesterday." [Schubert, 1819] Schubert was extremely self-critical, leaving an unusually large number of incomplete works behind. The most celebrated is the Unfinished Symphony, however, many fragments survive of abandoned string quartets. Among these is the Quartettsatz ("Quartet Movement"), written just before Schubert turned 24, the only one to have entered the standard repertoire. When Brahms was working on the first scholarly edition of Schubert's music, he found, in the manuscript score of the Quartettsatz, the sketch (about 40 measures) for a second movement Andante in A-flat; apparently Schubert intended to write a four-movement work, though this movement is independently convincing and complete. -

This was the time period in which “The Five” became known. They were: Rimsky-Korsakov (most influential, 1844-1908) Borodin Mussorgsky Cui Balakirev x Tchaikovsky (1840-’93) was not know as one of “The Five”. x Near the end of the Stalinist Period Prokofiev and Shostakovich produced music so peasants could listen to it as they worked. x During the 17th century, Russian music consisted of sacred vocal music or folk type songs. x Peter the Great liked military music (such as the drums). He liked trumpet music, church bells and simple Polish music. He did not like French or Italian music. Nor did Peter the Great like opera.
