YEARBOOK 2008/09 President’S Report MARIST BROTHERS CRICKET CLUB YEARBOOK 2008/09 President’s Report This season fortunately saw a great deal more cricket played than that of the previous season. Whilst wet weather did contribute to some unfortunate results for our L J Hooker & LDCA 1st Grade sides, players were at least rewarded by getting onto the paddock. After the disappointment of the washout of the Lismore Under 12’s carnival in 2008, a tremendously successful event was hosted in January of this year. This has proved to be financially rewarding for both the senior and junior clubs of Marist Brothers and would not have been possible without the great band of volunteers. There are too many people to name here without forgetting someone, so I say to all, well done and thank you. As for the Club’s results on the field, there was again disappointment in the season proper. While our L J Hooker side improved from last season, it was again another season of lost opportunities. I must applaud the side for its efforts in training and I commented to a number of people during the season that I have never seen the side work so hard. Hopefully the results will follow in due course. Congratulations to LDCA 1st Grade which won the 1 Day competition and the inaugural Twenty20 competition, proving maybe that we have a good number of “sloggers” in the Club. Also, congratulations to 2nd Grade which picked up the Minor & Major Premierships, after going through with an outright win in the semi following a first innings loss. This also atoned for the narrow loss in last season’s Grand Final. Well done to 3rd Grade who managed to sneak into the semis on a quotient count back and to 5th Grade for a run to a Minor Premiership which unfortunately ended in the semi finals. A special mention must go to 5th Grade which fielded a team largely comprising of father and son combinations and which proved a resounding success. It must be said that the Club would not be able to run from year to year without the efforts of dedicated Club Members. A special mention must go to David Cleaver again for his efforts as Club Coach, Toby Collings as Raffle Organiser, Matt Wilson as Web Master and Craig Hamshaw for his tireless efforts as Chairman of Selectors which is largely a thankless task. I would also like to thank the executive and those who assisted the committee during the year and anyone in general who gave up their time to assist the club. I urge in the coming years for everyone to pitch in and lend a hand as this makes things easier for everyone. We must also not forget to thank our many sponsors and in particular the ongoing support we receive from the Rous Hotel. As is the case with our club, there were numerous activities during the season, including the Dog Night, Golf Day, Bowls Day, Christmas Party, BBQs and spectating at games. I can proudly say there is no other cricket club in Lismore which comes close to the camaraderie which our club fosters. This is something we can all be very proud of and which should be preserved at all costs. That just about wraps it up for this season. Again, I thank all members for participating this season, we hope to see you back again next season. Special thanks to Glen Lees for compiling this yearbook. The season started reasonably well, and with some quality new recruits on board we saw ourselves in a competitive position at Christmas. But a combination of mother natures poorly timed deluges, poor player availability, below average cricket and too much Christmas cheer saw the team without a win in the second half of the season. But, as seems to be our custom of late, the side still enjoyed each others company on a Saturday afternoon and remained positive throughout the heartbreak. We enjoyed a couple of season highlights, including a thrilling all round performance which saw us knock off defending premiers Casino on their own turf. So all is not lost and while having a beer after the last game the conversation quickly turned to next season. Bring it on! Brother’s Hooker Stars? Paul Simes – Newcomertarius – As the Sun met Venus in his sign this year, Paul decided to stay the hell away from any MBCC related galactic trouble until close to Christmas. Strong Moon alignment led to a quality start with the club. Work and partying commitments, along with opening the batting with Fightclubacorns hampered a good start. Lucky colour: Tangerine Lucky Numbers: 1,654,234 & 6 Luke Collings – Fightclubacorn – Jupiter entering Saturn’s cosmic belt suggests that you have and will continue to be an aggressive bastard for the time being, particularly when coming in contact with Tweeddiquheadios. Disappointment loomed this season with the bat after several starts. It looks a great time to re-evaluate your direction and then take the same one. Lucky colour: Onyx Lucky Number: 4 (the number of near stoushes you had this year) Ben Wraight: Treasurarius – A disappointing year for Ben but this was not surprising considering that Uranus had broken its orbit and made life shit for all Treasurarians. Failed to back up his strong preceding year, but the stars look good for Ben’ next 12 months with runs, runs, runs. Also if your social life no longer reflects who you are, just get drunk! Lucky colour: Bone White Lucky number: 21 Joel Parrey – Medicinemanigo – It appears to be smooth sailing for the next little while for all Medicinemanigos, particularly if they can avoid the advice of any Thinkitarians. Powerful astrological alignment with Mercury allowed Joel to blaze away some quality scores throughout the season however a seemingly suspicious curse placed on him by an unknown source broke Joel’ bum or thumb, ending a promising season. Lucky Colour: Stethescope grey Lucky number: $284,100 (Joel’s estimated earnings in 2021) Ben Cooper – Hit4sixergo – You are advised that while Jupiter’s 3rd moon is entering Hitforsixergo that you should try batting for longer periods of time without trying to hit the ball to the moon aforementioned. A season highlight included a thrashing ton against Murwillumbah, your stars look bright for a good couple of seasons with Brothers before hitting the big smoke. Lucky Colour: Mulberry pink Lucky Number: 680 (the number of runs he will score for Brothers next year) Craig Ferguson – Skipperius – An absence of some of your peer’s youth appears to put little dampness on your enthusiasm. It appears likely that while you continue to associate with/lead Hit4sixgoers you will need to continue the vigorous sun protection of your scalp. Your future stars look healthy, with a break over the winter months and a much needed attendance on a bus trip next season recommended. Lucky Colour – Billy Joel goatee grey Lucky Number – 961 (the number of grey hairs that have been given to him by the cricket club) Toby Collings – Bringtheeskyeo – According to your stars the ones closest to you appear to be using you for the beverages that you take with you wherever you go, be particularly weary of Lancearmstronians and Treasurarians in this regard. A return to quality bowling saw you gain confidence in all forms of the game, but your focus on fielding led you to drop the bundle on your usual role of team security guard when Fightclubacorns were in trouble.

Playing The club, although not as successful on the field this season with only the 3rd XI making the finals, were still competitive in all XIs. The loss of three keys players during the season from the 1st XI, Will Long due to work commitments, Andrew McGorian due to injury and Riz Chhabra, had a ripple effect through all sides. Cam Christensen did an excellent job as coach of the club and was ably assisted by Mark Quinn and John Watkin. It was great to have Mark and John at the club as they are great role models for the younger players. The second half of the season saw Ben Cavey appointed to assist Cam. Ben fitted into the role very well and was a great asset to the coaching panel.
