LAMORINDA WEEKLY | Letters to the Editor Published July 8th, 2009 Letters to the Editor Editor, It was good to read your article on Aaron Poreda making it to the show and his Campolindo background. I wish him much success in his baseball career and will be rooting for him. In the article you indicate that he became the second player in Campolindo High School history to play professional baseball. Actually, Campolindo has a storied baseball history. In the l980's they were league champions in '80-'81-'82-'83-'84-'85-'87 & '88. They were North Coast Champions in 1988 when teams from all divisions played for one championship. That l988 team was also voted the #1 team in the East Bay and the #1 3A team in the state by Cal Hi Sports. A number of players from the l980's and '90's went on to play college and professional baseball. In l983 Ron Delucci was the #7 overall pick by the Pittsburg Pirates in the Major League draft. Dave Carley, a pitcher, was drafted in the 8th round. Chip Hale, Paul Faries & Steve Erickson went on the college from that team and all played professional ball. Hale got a World Series ring playing for the Minnesota Twins and is currently the third base coach for the Arizona Diamondbacks. Faries played in the big leagues for the San Diego Padres and the San Francisco Giants. From the 1988 team a number of players were chosen to play professional baseball including Steve Bishop, Mike McDermott, Sean O'Connell, Jeff Scarpitti, Mike Harrison and Jon Zuber.

  • Heroes and Rallies Baseball
Heroes and Rallies Baseball Setup Pick two teams to go head to head, and fill out your lineups on the scoresheet. Each team receives 8 skill assignments to give to individual players. All of the skill assignments listed below must be used within your starting lineup for a total of 8. A player may possess two assignments if you wish. Rate your lineup by placing the appropriate notation beside a player’s name on the scoresheet. 1) star hitter (H) 2) star slugger (S) 3) star runner (R) 4) star fielder (F) 5) poor hitter (H-) 6) weak hitter (S-) 7) slow runner (R-) 8) poor fielder (F-) Once a player has a skill assignment, he cannot transfer it to another player. There is one additional skill assignment available for an ace pitcher (X). You may, however, choose not to start one. Make any pitcher a poor hitter as well (H-), so there will be two poor hitters if a pitcher is in the lineup. Game Play Roll the dice for each player who comes up to bat, reading the colored die first and the white die second. If a result occurs on the Batting chart which displays an image of a ballplayer, the inning is considered finished with no further scoring. Draw an X in the box on the scoresheet representing the current hitter’s at-bat. When his team next comes up to bat, the next player in the lineup will hit. If the color of a chart result corresponds to the color of the skill assignment of the player who is currently up to bat, the result changes to the one shown on the bottom of the Batting chart.

MLB: The Greatest College Baseball Player Never Drafted Remembering the Legend of St. Leo's Phil Ross And how St. Leo College’s run to the 1984 College World Series was curtailed By Paul Bermel July 2015 Story Highlights: 1. St. Leo's Phil Ross batted .484, had 22 HRs (1 HR every 8.5 at-bats) in 50 games, averaged 1.8 hits and 1.8 RBIs per game. 2. Years ahead of the widespread adoption of Bill James’s "Sabermetrics," Ross had a mind-boggling 1.607 OPS [On- base percentage (.645) plus slugging percentage (.962)]. That's 13% higher than Barry Bonds' MLB all-time record of 1.4217 set in 2004. The NCAA does not keep or rank OPS statistics. 3. Ross hit two grand slams in one inning (yes, one inning) versus Division I Florida A&M and he was featured on CNN Sports that night for one of the rarest accomplishments in baseball. 4. St. Leo first baseman Phil Ross was the only unanimous First Team All-American in Division II in 1985. 5. Ross set or tied eight NCAA records in 1985 (five are still in the record books 30 years later). 6. In the prestigious Sunshine State Conference (SSC), Ross was the first and only player ever to win the Triple Crown (Highest batting average, most home runs, and most RBIs). Thru 2015, in the 30 years since the SSC was formed in 1975, an SSC team has 21 times been in the Division II College World Series championship game, winning the crown 14 times, and 7 times as runner-up.
