This study presents the first ever record of molluscan fauna from shapk beach of Jiwani. Amongst these fifty eight (58) species were found belonging to class gastropoda, twenty two (22) bivalves, one (1) scaphopod and one (1) polyplachopora comprised of thirty nine (39) families. Each collected samples was identified on species level as well as biometric data of certain species was calculated for both sites. Molluscan species similarity was also calculated between two sites. For gastropods it was remain 74 %, for bivalves 76 %, for Polyplacophora 100 % and for Scapophoda 0 %. Meanwhile total similarity of molluscan species between two sites was calculated 75 %. Notable identified species from Bandri and Shapak includes Oysters, Muricids, Babylonia shells, Trochids, Turbinids and shells belonging to Pinnidae, Arcidae, Veneridae families are of commercial significance which can be exploited for a variety of purposes like edible, ornamental, therapeutic, dye extraction, and in cement industry etc.

The diverse and unique shell shapes are interesting to draw. The easiest medium to describe the shape of a mollusk is in two dimensions. This study aims to identify various images of mollusks in two-dimensional print media such as cloth, paper and plates. Based on the 10 sources of photos analyzed, 56 species of mollusks from 38 families were identified. The Gastropod class dominates with 45 species from 31 families, followed by Bivalves with 7 species from 5 families, then Cephalopods with 4 species from 2 families. Some of the problems found are the shape and proportion of images that different with specimens, some inverted or cropped images, different direction of rotation of the shells with specimens, and different colour patterns with specimens. Biological and distributional aspects of several families will be discussed briefly in this paper. Keywords : identification, mollusca, photo, species, two-dimension ABSTRAK Manusia telah mengenal hewan moluska sejak lama.

ABSTRACT: This study determined the abundance and diversity of molluscs (focused on gastropod) at Hara Protected Area (HPA) and Gaz and Hara Rivers Delta (GHRD) mangroves, southern of Iran. Point count sampling method was employed in this study. A total of 1581 individual of gastropods, representing 28 species and 21 families, were observed in the two sites. The PCA plot indicated that all species have correlation with winter excluding species namely Ethalia sp., Haminoea sp., Trichotropis sp. and Tibia insulaechorab curta at HPA and Telescopium telescopium, Stocsicia annulata, and Stenothyra arabica at GHRD. The mean number of species was estimated 6.88±2.77 (per plot) versus 9.65±6.63 (per plot) at HPA and GHRD respectively. The results of X2 test 2 indicated that there was a high significant difference between total gastropod population observed at 4 seasons (X 3, 1=31.9, p<0.001), but there was no significant difference in term of number of species between sites in order to 2 seasonal observation (X 3, 1=0.84, p>0.05). The results of diversity comparisons indicated that the highest diversity was in the HPA as compared to GHRD.

  • Evolution, Distribution, and Phylogenetic Clumping of a Repeated Gastropod Innovation
Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2017, 180, 732–754. With 5 figures. The varix: evolution, distribution, and phylogenetic clumping of a repeated gastropod innovation NICOLE B. WEBSTER1* and GEERAT J. VERMEIJ2 1Department of Biological Sciences, University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada T6G 2E9 2Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences, University of California, Davis, CA 95616, USA Received 27 June 2016; revised 4 October 2016; accepted for publication 25 October 2016 A recurrent theme in evolution is the repeated, independent origin of broadly adaptive, architecturally and function- ally similar traits and structures. One such is the varix, a shell-sculpture innovation in gastropods. This periodic shell thickening functions mainly to defend the animal against shell crushing and peeling predators. Varices can be highly elaborate, forming broad wings or spines, and are often aligned in synchronous patterns. Here we define the different types of varices, explore their function and morphological variation, document the recent and fossil distri- bution of varicate taxa, and discuss emergent patterns of evolution. We conservatively found 41 separate origins of varices, which were concentrated in the more derived gastropod clades and generally arose since the mid-Mesozoic. Varices are more prevalent among marine, warm, and shallow waters, where predation is intense, on high-spired shells and in clades with collabral ribs. Diversification rates were correlated in a few cases with the presence of varices, especially in the Muricidae and Tonnoidea, but more than half of the origins are represented by three or fewer genera. Varices arose many times in many forms, but generally in a phylogenetically clumped manner (more frequently in particular higher taxa), a pattern common to many adaptations.

Abstract Nine specimens of Strombus sensu L in n a e u s examined by Born have been rediscovered in the Natural History Museum in Vienna. Among these is the lectotype (designated herein) for Strombus fasciatus B o r n , 1778. The identity of the syntypes of Strombus succinctus L in n a e u s , 1767 and the status and identity of S. accinctus are discussed. Key words: Strombus, Born, lectotype, succinctus, Linnaeus. Introduction During a visit to the Natural History Museum in Vienna (NHMW) in November 2006 there was an opportunity briefly to check some of the species allocated to Strombus sensu L in n a e u s that were described in B o r n (1778) and again (and partly illustrated) in B orn (1780).
