BGF46 Mid Wales Red Squirrel Project: Grey Squirrel Control Pilot Report by the Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales, March 2012 Introduction

The Mid Wales Red Squirrel Project (MWRSP)

The red squirrel in Wales is under real threat. Significant populations are thought only to occur in three locations - in Anglesey, the Clocaenog Forest (North Wales) and our population in mid-Wales, these comprising the three ‘focal sites’ for the species in Wales1.

Previous work by the MWRSP has already shown that the mid-Wales population of red squirrel is the most genetically diverse in Wales, and although it is very difficult to assess numbers, it is likely to be the largest (Denman and Harries, 20062). Despite this, it remains the least researched of the 3 key Welsh populations and still requires the greatest conservation investment to secure its long term future.

Background

The Mid Wales Red Squirrel Partnership was formed in 2002 to address the shortfall in knowledge and conservation action for the mid Wales population. Its aims are:

 To establish more widespread and reliable baseline data on the distribution of red squirrels in the mid-Wales area  To establish a more accurate estimate of population size  To assess the levels of threats to the population and take action to reduce them (e.g. grey squirrel incursion, presence of pox virus)  To increase the extent and quality of red squirrel habitat available

Members of the Partnership include Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion and Powys County Councils, The Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales, Brecknock Wildlife Trust, CCW, Forestry Commission Wales, UPM Tilhill, the MISE project, and private forester Huw Denman.

Between 2002 and 2011 the Partnership has successfully sought funds to deliver a significant body of research into the current status of the red squirrel in mid Wales (Hobbs 20053, Denman and Harries 2006). This has greatly increased our understanding of their distribution, use of the forest habitat, and genetics, and allowed us to undertake significant educational and outreach work. This has also been built on in recent years by some modelling work by Forest Research which analysed habitat networks for both red and grey squirrels in mid Wales4.

BGF46 Mid Wales Red Squirrel Project: Grey Squirrel Control Pilot Report by the Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales, March 2012 The Project

The spread of the grey squirrel across Britain has been identified as the most significant of a number of threats to red squirrel conservation. Grey squirrels impact red squirrels through a number of mechanisms, including competition for food and by acting as carriers of the fatal squirrelpox virus.

The aim of this project was to undertake a strategic grey squirrel control pilot within the previously identified buffer area of the MWRSP for the benefit of red squirrels and wider woodland biodiversity. Although some grey squirrel control work has already been taking place in the project area, it has been ad hoc and according to funding available to individual landowners. This pilot built on MWRSP’s research detailed above, and local expertise, to deliver a strategic programme of grey squirrel control for the benefit of the red squirrel population (and wider woodland biodiversity). It also allowed us to continue our work to engage local residents and raise awareness within the local of the iconic red squirrel.

The project comprised an identified pilot project for a wider programme of grey squirrel control we hope to implement in the future, to protect the mid Wales’s red squirrels. It therefore forms a key part of an on-going strategy developed by the MWRSP, which in turn sits within a number of national strategies and action plans; this specific project fulfills part of the Conservation Plan for Red Squirrels in Wales and also the action plan for the MWRSP5.

It also builds specifically information collated by a desktop contract issued by Forestry Commission Wales, which aimed to identify landowners in the area, compile information on the ad hoc grey squirrel control already underway, and to undertake a gap analysis.

This project then delivered grey squirrel control, addressing some of the gaps identified, seeking to co-ordinate any existing activities, promoting best practice, and increasing effectiveness of the control. It also engaged volunteers in the process of targetting trapping within the identified woodlands, to teach them skills identifying squirrel field signs, and in some cases engaging them in the actual trapping work.

The MWRSP area is shown in Figure 1 and the pilot project area in Figure 2.

The project set out to deliver the following:  To train volunteers in squirrel survey  To survey and trap a large part of the pilot area to remove grey squirrels  To engage local landowners in red squirrel conservation

The following performance indicators were agreed with Environment Wales:

Performance Indicators Target Number of volunteers involved 20 Number of Volunteer hours 245 Number of landowners engaged / informed 25 Number of contractor days undertaking Grey 66 Squirrel control Number of grey squirrels trapped by contractor No target but will record results Number of grey squirrels trapped by partners No target and volunteers but will record results Number of volunteers undertaking own Grey 2 Squirrel trapping on their land

Project Delivery

Volunteer survey day

To begin the project, a survey day was arranged for Saturday 21 January 2012 when volunteers met at a single location in the MWRSP area, and were then allocated transects to survey for squirrel sightings and signs. This was intended to train the volunteers in squirrel survey techniques but also to generate important geo-referenced data on squirrel activity to inform the trapping that would take place later in the project. All volunteers were trained on the day in survey techniques and were introduced to the aims of the project. They were all issued with a photographic guide to squirrel signs and maps of their allocated transect areas.

BGF46 Mid Wales Red Squirrel Project: Grey Squirrel Control Pilot Report by the Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales, March 2012 We are grateful to RSPB Cymru and Forestry Commission Wales for granting us access to their land to undertake these surveys.

Figure 3: volunteers look for squirrel signs in the broadleaf woodland surveyed during 21 January 2012

In total, eighteen volunteer days (Appendix 1) were donated to the survey and a total of ten transects were completed.

No live squirrel sightings were observed (probably due to the time of year and inclement weather conditions) but 14 dreys, 26 areas of squirrel-chewed nuts and cones, and 11 sites of squirrel damaged trees were recorded, a total of 51 separate observations (Figure 4, Appendix 2). These records were also subsequently submitted to the relevant landowners for their own records.

BGF46 Mid Wales Red Squirrel Project: Grey Squirrel Control Pilot Report by the Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales, March 2012 Contract grey squirrel trapping

After multiple quotes were sought (details in application form) a contract to undertake the grey squirrel control was awarded to Phil Harries of Farm Forestry and Woodland Management. Phil and his employees had the required licence from CCW (because of the chance of catching red squirrels as well as grey) and experience of operating in the red squirrel project area. They also had adequate live traps to undertake the work (lethal traps cannot be used in red squirrel conservation areas).

Trapping commenced on 30 January 2012 (nine days after the volunteer survey day so that data were as relevant as possible) and completed on 24 February 2012. Permission was sought from all landowners prior to the setting of traps. A total of 64 person days of trapping were undertaken with two days writing up and organising paperwork. Traps were pre-baited (baited with maize and peanut feed but not set) for several days followed by trapping sessions of around ten days. Traps were moved from site to site by quad bike and lorry through difficult terrain; a total of just over 1300km of off-road travel were undertaken by the quad bikes during this contract. Over the total 64 person days, 318 ‘trap events’ were undertaken with the traps in groups of around 5.

The location of the trap groups are shown in Figure 5 and the full details of each in Appendix 3.

Notes to target delivery:

Numbers of volunteers: 18 volunteers were involved in the public volunteer survey day (whole day including travel averaged 9 hours). A further 9 partners (separate individuals) gave a day of their time to a meeting to discuss delivery of the project. In addition two person days were donated by partners specifically to organise the volunteer day. Four private landowners are trapping on their own land, average 3 days each.

Number of volunteer hours 162 hours were contributed to the public survey. 36 hours of in-kind time were donated by partners for the meeting arranged to discuss delivery. 90 hours estimated voluntary contribution to trapping.

Finances

The agreed finances according to the grant offer letter are shown below with actual spend. One amendment is to volunteer expenses, which was underspent, and therefore a proportion of which was moved to WTSWW out of pocket travel costs as a WTSWW vehicle was also used to transport volunteers. This was agreed verbally and later by email with Alison Colebrook. This figure comprises 70 miles (volunteer survey day), 58 miles (project delivery meeting in Brechfa), 25 miles (partners project delivery meeting in Llandeilo) and 30 miles (contractor meeting in Salem).

Discussion

The project successfully delivered against all its targets and as such represents the completion of the grey squirrel control pilot, and as such, the first strategic grey squirrel control across multiple landowners sites carried out in a co-ordinated way with dedicated funds to support work on third party land.

Methods had to be adapted from original plans, leaving traps in situ for longer per session than anticipated as this proved necessary to remove most grey squirrels from each area. No red squirrels were caught. Grey squirrel numbers were relatively low (except in Dolaucothi) but this is because trapping was undertaken at the time of year when numbers are lowest, immediately preceding breeding. However this means the results of the trapping are effective as breeding pairs have now been removed from the pilot area. Numbers of grey squirrels increased towards the west (towards Dolacothi and away from the red squirrel core area).

Since successful completion of this project we have been in negotiations with the Forestry Commission about possible funds to extend the pilot, which will add value to the work delivered through these funds and provide an exit strategy to build on the gains made.

Acknowledgements

WTSWW would like to thank all the landowners, volunteers and partners who contributed to this project, as well as Environment Wales and the Woodland Ecosystem Group and INNS group for making the funding possible. We would particularly like to thank Huw Denman, and Jenny MacPherson from the MISE project, without whose volunteered time the work would not have been possible, and Forestry Commission Wales and RSPB Cymru for access to their land for the volunteer survey.
