Department of Planning and Zoning Subject: Howard County Landscape Manual Updates: Recommended Street Tree List (Appendix B) and Recommended Plant List (Appendix C) - Effective July 1, 2010 To: DLD Review Staff Homebuilders Committee From: Kent Sheubrooks, Acting Chief Division of Land Development Date: July 1, 2010 Purpose: The purpose of this policy memorandum is to update the Recommended Plant Lists presently contained in the Landscape Manual. The plant lists were created for the first edition of the Manual in 1993 before information was available about invasive qualities of certain recommended plants contained in those lists (Norway Maple, Bradford Pear, etc.). Additionally, diseases and pests have made some other plants undesirable (Ash, Austrian Pine, etc.). The Howard County General Plan 2000 and subsequent environmental and community planning publications such as the Route 1 and Route 40 Manuals and the Green Neighborhood Design Guidelines have promoted the desirability of using native plants in landscape plantings. Therefore, this policy seeks to update the Recommended Plant Lists by identifying invasive plant species and disease or pest ridden plants for their removal and prohibition from further planting in Howard County and to add other available native plants which have desirable characteristics for street tree or general landscape use for inclusion on the Recommended Plant Lists. Please note that a comprehensive review of the street tree and landscape tree lists were conducted for the purpose of this update, however, only -

Catalpa Bignonioides
Pub. No. 15 April 2016 Southern Catalpa Catalpa bignonioides by Dr. Kim D. Coder, Professor of Tree Biology & Health Care Warnell School of Forestry & Natural Resources, University of Georgia The Southern catalpa (Catalpa bignonioides) tree is a common fixture along roadsides and in old landscapes. The big green leaves and distinctive long dangling fruits are noticeable from hundreds of yards away. Although used in the past for a few wood-based products and pioneer medicines, today catalpa is used for shade trees and for growing a special caterpillar. This catalpa “worm” is prized by fishing enthusiast across the South. Family Ties The catalpa tree is a member of the Catalpa or Trumpet-Creeper family (Bignoniaceae). This family contains more than 700 species scattered around the globe, primarily in tropical and sub-tropical regions. This plant family is represented by trees, shrubs and vines in North America. The trumpet creeper (Campsis radicans), cross vine (Bignonia capreolata), and two catalpa trees (Catalpa ssp.) are the most recognized natives of this family in the Southeastern United States. The exotic Asiatic Pau- lownia tree is a member of this family and has been widely planted, now reproducing on its own. The catalpa genus (Catalpa) has 12 species spread across North America, the Caribbean basin, Eastern Asia and Japan. There are two common native catalpa trees in the United States, and one exotic (Catalpa ovata - Chinese catalpa). Catalpa speciosa is the larger and more northern growing of the two native trees. Common names for this catalpa are Northern catalpa, Western catalpa, and catawba-tree. Catalpa bignonioides is the native Southern catalpa. -

Susumu TERABAYASHI (Received iNovember 13, l981) Abstract The floral anatomy of CauloPh71tum, Leontice, G"mnospermittm and Bongardia are discussed with special reference given to vasculature. Comparisons offloral anatomy are made with the other genera og the tribe Epimedieae. The vasculature in the receptacle of Caulopnjilum, Leontice and G]mnospermiitm is similar, but that of Bongardia differs in the very thick xylem of the receptacular stele and in the independent origin ef the traces to the sepals, petals and stamens from the stele. A tendency is recognized in that the outer floral elements receive traces ofa sing]e nature in origin from the stele while the inner elements receive traces ofa double nature. The traces to the inner e}ements are often clerived from common bundles in Caulop/tyllttm, Leontice and G"mnospermittm. A similar tendency is observed in the trace pattern in the other genera of Epimedieae, but the adnation of the traces is not as distinct as in the genera treated in this study. -

Native Plants that Provide Seeds and Berries Abies amabilis Pacific Silver Fir An attractive conifer with short dark green needles. Tolerant of shade. Squirrels and other rodents extract seeds from the large cones. Abies grandis Grand Fir Abies grandis is a tall, straight tree with short, dense branches. Grouse, nuthatches, chickadees, grosbeaks, finches, crossbills feed on the fir seeds. Sapsuckers and woodpeckers feed on the foliage. Pine white butterfly larvae eat the leaves. Acer circinatum Vine Maple Tall, erect, multi-trunked shrub or small tree with sprawling branches. Birds that eat the seeds include grosbeaks, woodpeckers, nuthatches, finches, quail, and grouse. A larvae plant for the brown tissue moth and the Polyphemus moth. A good nectar source for bees. Deer, mountain beavers, and other beavers eat the twigs and wood. Acer macrophyllum Big-leaf Maple A tree with a large, often multi-stemmed trunk and a loose, broad crown of large leaves. The rotting limbs provide a food source for insect-eating birds such as grouse, grosbeaks, kinglets, siskins, vireos, warblers, sapsuckers, woodpeckers, nuthatches, song sparrows, finches, and quail. Acer macrophyllum is a good nectar source for swallowtail butterfly larvae and bees. Deer, muskrats, and beaver eat the wood and twigs. Achillea millefolium Yarrow Aromatic herb with delicate fern-like leaves and flat-topped clusters of white flowers. Arbutus menziesii Madrone An attractive broadleaf evergreen with a twisting reddish trunk and irregular branches with an overall rounded outline. The fruit is eaten by band-tailed pigeons, quail, flickers, varied thrushes, waxwings, evening grosbeaks, mourning doves, and robins. The flowers are pollinated by spring azure butterflies and bees. -

Acer platanoides Acer platanoides in Europe: distribution, habitat, usage and threats G. Caudullo, D. de Rigo Acer platanoides L., commonly known as Norway maple, is a large tree that is widespread in central Europe and reaching eastwards the Ural Mountains. It is a fast-growing species, able to grow in a wide range of soils and habitat conditions. In natural stands it occurs in fresh and humid sites in temperate mixed forests, both with conifers and broadleaves. It is a secondary species, growing in small groups or individually. It has been planted intensively as an ornamental and shade tree, appreciated for its colourful foliage and large, spreading crown, in combination with its tolerance of urban conditions. Its wood is also valued for its attractive flaming figures and is used for music instruments, furniture, marquetry and turned objects. This maple is generally free of serious diseases, except in urban areas, where it is more vulnerable to pathogens. In North America it has been widely planted and is now naturalised, becoming an invasive species. The Norway maple (Acer platanoides L.) is a large and tall- domed tree, sometimes very broad, growing to 25-30 m tall and Frequency 60-80 cm in diameter, although exceptionally over 150 cm. The < 25% 25% - 50% stem is straight, short with perpendicular shoots and the crown 50% - 75% is dense with foliage. The leaves are opposite, simple, 10-15 cm > 75% Chorology long, very variable in dimension depending on the age and the Native vigour of the tree. They have five lobes with long and acuminate Introduced teeth and smooth margins. -
