Publication Series of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna Eva Blimlinger, Andrea B. Braidt, Karin Riegler (Series Eds.) VOLUME 21 On the Publication Series We are pleased to present the latest volume in the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna’s publication series. The series, published in cooperation with our highly com- mitted partner Sternberg Press, is devoted to central themes of contemporary thought about art practices and theories. The volumes comprise contribu- tions on subjects that form the focus of discourse in art theory, cultural studies, art history, and research at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and represent the quintessence of international study and discussion taking place in the respective fields. Each volume is published in the form of an anthology, edited by staff members of the academy. Authors of high international repute are invited to make contributions that deal with the respective areas of emphasis. Research activities such as international conferences, lecture series, institute- specific research focuses, or research projects serve as points of departure for the individual volumes. All books in the series undergo a single blind peer review. International re- viewers, whose identities are not disclosed to the editors of the volumes, give an in-depth analysis and evaluation for each essay. The editors then rework the texts, taking into consideration the suggestions and feedback of the reviewers who, in a second step, make further comments on the revised essays. -

Chapter Iv Conclusion
CHAPTER IV CONCLUSION In this chapter I would like to elaborate some findings of my thesis. Basically, Grice states that we should apply conversational maxims in order to make a conversation works well. However, in this thesis, it is found out that a speaker and an addressee fail to apply the rules in many conversations. It proves that a speaker and an addressee cannot always stick to the maxims in a conversation. As a result of failing to observe the Gricean conversational maxims, implicature arises. After analysing the occurrence of suspense due to the failure to observe the Gricean maxims in Prison Break, I have some findings which show the type of non-observance of a maxim which the speakers often fail to observe, the type of conversational maxim which the speakers often do, the reasons why the speakers fail to observe a maxim and how the failure of observing a maxim in Prison Break television series creates suspense to the audience. First, I find that flouting a maxim is the type of non-observance which the speakers do the most in Prison Break television series. In my thesis, 45 Maranatha Christian University there are only two types of non-observance that I find; those are flouting a maxim (70.6%) and violating a maxim (29.4%). Through this percentage, I think the effect of suspense can work better when the characters flout the maxims as the audience is triggered to find out more about what is actually meant behind the utterances. Actually, I also find some other types of the non-observance in this television series, such as: infringing, opting out, and suspending. -

For further information CILM project official website 1 Experimenting with Torture: Abu Ghraib through the lens of Paul Scheuring’s The Experiment1 Ana Romão2 and Susana Araújo3 Abstract In the turmoil of the Iraq War, the scandal of what happened at Abu Ghraib leaked through in the form of photographs depicting scenes of torture and humiliation that are usually kept away from public attention. This article reflects on how that event changed the way we think about terror and violence and how they are represented on the silver screen. The article will focus on the 2010 movie The Experiment, itself a dramatization of the 1971 “Stanford Prison” psychology experiment. The article will analyze to what extent the representation of certain characters, plots and motifs in the film are influenced by images taken from the Abu Ghraib photographs. The article will further explore what the overlaps between movie and photographic images tell us about the complex processes of psychological identification in a context shaped by fear and hatred. The article ultimately seeks to ponder the subversive influence of the Abu Ghraib photos on The Experiment, and how that influence is portrayed. -
