  • The Media, Poverty and Public Opinion in the UK
The media, poverty and public opinion in the UK John H. McKendrick, Stephen Sinclair, September 2008 Anthea Irwin, Hugh O’Donnell, Gill Scott and Louise Dobbie How the media in the UK represents poverty and its effect on wider public understanding. The media fulfi ls an important role in shaping, amplifying and responding to public attitudes toward poverty. This study, part of the ‘Public Interest in Poverty Issues’ research programme, explores the role of national, local and community media in refl ecting and infl uencing public ideas of poverty and welfare. The research aimed to: • compare representations of poverty across different contemporary UK media; • identify the principal factors and considerations infl uencing those involved in producing media coverage of poverty; • understand how UK media representations of poverty relate to the public’s understanding of poverty, and any differences between the responses of different groups; • identify examples of effective practice in communicating poverty issues to the public and derive transferable lessons from these. The researchers analysed coverage of poverty in news reporting; looked at how the same poverty news story was reported across different news outlets; reviewed how poverty was presented across different genres of television programme; interviewed key informants involved in the production, placement and presentation of poverty coverage in the mass media and explored public interpretations and responses to media coverage of poverty through focus groups/ workshops. www.jrf.org.uk Contents

THE IMPRISONED BODY: WOMEN, HEALTH AND IMPRISONMENT CATRIN SMITH THESIS SUBMITTED FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY (SEPTEMBER 1996) DbEFNYDDIO TN er LLYFRGELL, Th U.= TO tE CqNSULTED 11BRARY UNIVERSITY OF WALES, BANGOR SCHOOL OF SOCIOLOGY AND SOCIAL PO I was never allowed to forget that being a prisoner, even my body was not my own (Maybrick, 1905 :112). The idea that law has the power to right wrongs is persuasive. Just as medicine is seen as curative rather than iatrogenic, so law is seen as extending rights rather than creating wrongs (Smart, 1989: 12) Abstract Problems affecting the female prison population have become increasingly acute. In response to a spirit of 'toughness' in penal policy, the number of women prisoners has grown sharply and more women are being sent to prison despite arguments in favour of decarceration and alternative sanctions. In prison, women make greater demands on prison health services and are generally considered to carry a greater load of physical and mental ill-health than their male counterparts. However, a gender-sensitive theory based on an understanding of the relationship between women's health and women's imprisonment has not been formulated. Health is a complex phenomenon of inseparable physical, mental and social processes. Research conducted in three women's prisons in England set out to explore the relationships between these processes. Data were generated from group discussions, in-depth interviews, a questionnaire survey and observation and participation in 'the field'. The findings suggest that women's imprisonment is disadvantageous to 'good' health. Deprivations, isolation, discreditation and the deleterious effects of excessive regulation and control all cause women to suffer as they experience imprisonment.

  • Greg Davies Unites Top Comics for a Benefit Gig at London’S Eventim Apollo in Response to the Refugee Crisis
GREG DAVIES UNITES TOP COMICS FOR A BENEFIT GIG AT LONDON’S EVENTIM APOLLO IN RESPONSE TO THE REFUGEE CRISIS On Wednesday 11th November, top names from the comedy world are coming together to help raise funds for charities - ActionAid and the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR). Stand Up in Action - the one off comedy benefit night at London’s Eventim Apollo, will see a host of stars perform in aid of the current overwhelming global refugee crisis - the largest since the Second World War. The evening, hosted by GREG DAVIES (The Inbetweeners, Man Down, Channel 4), will include performances from fellow comics JO BRAND (Getting On, BBC One, Bake Off, An Extra Slice, BBC Two), ROISIN CONATY (Man Down, Channel 4, Impractical Jokers, BBC Three), RUSSELL HOWARD (Russell Howard’s Good News, BBC Two), REGINALD D HUNTER (multiple Perrier nominee, Reginald D Hunter's Songs of the South, BBC Two), DARA O’BRIAIN (Mock The Week, BBC Two) and JACK WHITEHALL (Fresh Meat, Channel 4, Bad Education, BBC Three) to name a few. All proceeds from the gig will be equally split between ActionAid and UNHCR to provide much needed support and assistance to refugees. ActionAid works with some of the world’s poorest women and children. They have been working with Syrian refugees in Jordan and Lebanon since 2013, supporting over 90,000 people in the region and providing them with essential items such as clothing, hygiene items, torches, first aid kits as well as longer term support working with refugees in local communities. With the increase of migration to Europe, the island of Lesbos is often the first stop in Europe for many.

This is the fourth edition of the Brexit Briefing, we hope you enjoy. Much more information about all of these issues can be found on the Brexit Section of our website. There are three parts to the Briefing: 1) News from the Imperial Capital (Westminster) 2) Summing up in the Senedd (Assembly) 3) News from the European Parliament If you have any feedback let us know by emailing [email protected]. Summing up in the Senedd By our Assembly Brexit Spokesman Steffan Lewis AM and the Assembly Team Last weekend, Andrew RT Davies, the leader of the Conservatives in Wales, claimed that powers over agriculture should be returned to Westminster when the UK leaves the EU because farmers ‘do not trust’ the Welsh Government. Agricultural policy is currently devolved and the Welsh Government will gain the power to review and amend over 200 pieces of EU regulation that underpin Welsh environmental law after Brexit. Simon Thomas AM, Plaid Cymru rural affairs spokesperson, slammed Andrew RT Davies’s comments, saying in fact that ‘the Tories simply cannot be trusted to defend rural Wales’. He said, “the UK Government has completely failed to offer any security to farmers whose livelihoods are on the line. With this attitude being adopted by the Westminster government, it is absurd and irresponsible for the Leader of the Conservatives in Wales to claim that farming subsidies would be better administered from London.” Steffan Lewis has argued that greater cooperation between Ireland and Wales will be necessary to help us deal with the post-Brexit context. A ‘Celtic Sea Alliance’ should be established between the two nations, and especially between the western regions of Wales and the eastern regions of Ireland.

Introduction Dame Rosemary Butler AM Presiding Officer I am delighted to introduce the 30th issue of Europe Matters, our update on the work of the National Assembly for Wales on European issues. It was a privilege and an honour to participate on 16 August at the inauguration of the Welsh Memorial in Langemark, Flanders, to the Welsh soldiers who lost their lives in Flanders Fields during the First World War. Over 1,000 people from Wales and Flanders attended the ceremony, including the three leaders of the opposition parties in the Assembly, Andrew RT Davies AM, Leanne Wood AM and Kirsty Williams AM, and of course the First Minister Carwyn Jones AM. I and my fellow Commissioners, Sandy Mewies AM and Rhodri Glyn Thomas AM, will attend a special commemoration in Flanders next month, at the invite of the President of the Flemish Parliament Jan Peumans. This is another example of the strong co-operation and warmth between our two nations.
