The title of the show comes from Karen’s last recording session in the spring of 1982 which was released posthumously on her album “Voice of the Heart” in the fall of 1983. During their 14-year career, the Carpenters recorded 11 albums, 31 singles, five television specials, and a short-lived television series. Their career ended in 1983 by Karen's death from heart failure brought on by complications of anorexia. The Carpenters had three No. 1 singles and album and single sales total more than 100 million units. The musical revue will showcase Richard’s gorgeous compositions written with longtime collaborator John Bettis along with the hits that catapulted them to fame and made them a household name. Richard’s rich vocal and instrumental arrangements highlighted this duo’s collaboration revealing the talent that contributed to Karen’s success and popular music. We will delve into many of their recorded demos, some that were created in bassist Joe Osborn’s garage, in the mid-sixties while other materials sat on shelves from recorded TV specials or discarded from completed albums. We will explore her lovely solo album that she recorded in 1979-80 with producer Phil Ramone that A & M shelved, much to her dismay & devastation which remained unreleased till 1996. In the subsequent 18 years after Karen’s death, Richard remixed and released these finished demos on multiple albums. The performers are singer songwriter Jordan Renzi, theater pop singer Kristin Fehlau, theater veteran singer Anthony Teixeira and creator Ruth Condon. All vocal and music arrangements will be written by Musical Director Malcolm Granger who will also lead and be part of the 4 piece band. Written & Produced By Ruth Condon of Brave Horse Music and Directed by Anthony Teixeira .

  • Skinny Blues: Karen Carpenter, Anorexia Nervosa and Popular Music
Skinny blues: Karen Carpenter, anorexia nervosa and popular music George McKay We might locate that colloquial inauguration of anorexia on a Las Vegas nightclub stage in the fall of 1975, when the popular musician Karen Carpenter collapsed while singing ‘Top of the world’; or on the morning of 5 February 1983, when news [broke] of Carpenter’s death from a ‘starvation diet’…. [I]n the 1970s and 1980s [anorexia] … became a vernacular, an everyday word, an idiom. Patrick Anderson, So Much Wasted (2010, 32) The words come out of yr mouth but yr eyes say other things, ‘Help me, please, I’m lost in my own passive resistance, something went wrong’…. Did anyone ever ask you that question—what’s it like being a girl in music? Kim Gordon, ‘Open letter to Karen’ (n.d.) This article discusses an extraordinary body (Thomson 1997) in popular music, that belonging to the person with anorexia which is also usually a gendered body—female—and that of the singer or frontperson. I explore the relation between the anorexic body and popular music, which is more than simply looking at constructions of anorexia in pop. It involves contextually thinking about the (medical) history and the critical reception and representation, the place of anorexia across the creative industries more widely, and a particular moment when pop played a role in the public awareness of anorexia. Following such context I will look in more detail at a small number of popular music artists who had experience of anorexia, their stage and media presentations (of it), and how they did or apparently did not explore their experience of it in their own work and public appearances.

  • RENDER 8 – Madeline Bogoch
Carleton University Render Volume 8 Generation Loss: Bootlegs, Dubs, and Other Labours of Love Madeline Bogoch Art History, Concordia University, Montréal, Canada Abstract In his evocative essay Embedded Memories, Will Straw claims “the videocassette contains textual forms that are the expressive residues of more broadly-based cultural knowledges and aesthetic languages.” If, as Straw asserts, media is a vehicle of aesthetic languages, then how is its circulation leveraged semantically? In this paper, I pursue this question through two very different works which, on their own terms, provide insight into the prolific collisions that can occur between “format and feeling.” The first of these case studies is the Todd Haynes film Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story (1988), a pseudo- biopic which has thrived as a bootleg commodity since its removal from circulation, sustaining material degradation with each successive dub. The second is artist Daniel Barrow’s Winnipeg Babysitter: An Incomplete, Local History of 1980s Public Access Television (2009), an archival-performance piece which assembles fragments of Winnipeg’s golden age of public access broadcasting. Although in different ways, both of these moving image works are inextricably tied up in the afterlife of the footage itself, and the potency embedded in the material inscriptions their unique histories have written onto the media. Tracing the effects of these material inflections, this project considers how the aesthetics of obsolescence contribute to a reading of both works. Keywords: Analog, VHS, bootlegs, nostalgia, Public Access Television, Canadian history, digital humanities, memory Introduction upstairs and threw it on. STUDIES IN SEVEN ARTS STUDIES IN SEVEN ARTS BY AETHUR SYMONS in LONDON ARCHIBALD CONSTABLE AND COMPANY, LTD. 1906 630282 : T. and Edinturgh A. COKSTABLB, Printers to His Majesty TO RHODA Do you remember the first two sentences of ' ' Pater's essay on The School of Giorgione ? I will copy them, for they make a kind of motto for my book, and sum up, I think, the way in which you and I (you always, and I since I have known you) have looked upon art and the arts. 1 ' It is the mistake,' says Pater, of much popular criticism to regard poetry, music and painting all the various products of art as but transla- tions into different languages of one and the same fixed quantity of imaginative thought, supple- mented by certain technical qualities of colour in painting, of sound in music, of rhythmical words in poetry. In this way, the sensuous element in art, and with it almost everything in art that is essentially artistic, is made a matter of indiffer- ence; and a clear apprehension of the opposite principle that the sensuous material of each art brings with it a special phase or quality of beauty, untranslatable into the forms of any other, an order of impressions distinct in kind is the beginning of all true aesthetic criticism.' With the art of poetry, or of literature in general, I am not here concerned : that is my main con- cern in most of my other books of criticism. In this book I have tried to deal with the other arts, as I know or them and I find seven : recognise ; VI handi- painting, sculpture, architecture, music, craft, the stage (in which I include drama, acting, pantomime, scenery, costume, and lighting), and, of these separate from these, dancing.

  • Louis Johnson

Finally, a very complete and comprehensive compilation of the Carpenters albumsBy Irene EconomouRick Henry's retrospective, "Carpenters - Album by Album: Song by Song," is a thoughtful, well-executed compendium spanning Karen and Richard Carpenter's albums produced from the years of 1969 ("Offering"- aka "Ticket to Ride") through 2004 ("As Time Goes By"). The collection also includes the solo albums of Karen and Richard. It is an easy-to-follow, thorough listing of each album, including album credits, listing of songs within each album, interesting details or history about the songs, and noteworthy commentary by Rick, who also personally ranks each album. He has even included convenient links for those wishing to purchase any of the albums on .com.What I especially like about this compilation is that Rick has managed to provide not only a convenient reference eBook in a concise format, but also to provide just enough rich information related to the songs of the albums (including info about the songwriters) to make this eBook a very interesting read, too.

They are taught the way Tamarack learned them years ago from the Woodland Indians. Teaching Drum Outdoor School is not for everybody, as it is truly an outdoor school. The classroom is the wilderness, where all courses are held. Here is a survival school in the ultimate sense, as students learn how to not only stay alive, but thrive, even if they are caught without gear or equipment. Skills must be learned well enough to rely on in extreme situations. In the advanced courses, students eat their food raw if they cannot start a friction fire without tools, from whatever wood they find laying around.
