In many locations all over the world, volunteers will identify and count birds on a chosen day. The day is selected locally within a two-week period either side of Christmas day. In the Edmonton region there are generally eleven other counts within this time period. The city of Edmonton is one of over 400 count locations in Canada that participate in the count each year. The city of Edmonton divided is into 14 zones with the Riverbend area located in Zone 4. Christmas bird counts are undertaken worldwide with counts collecting data from many locations for past 113 years. This year is Edmonton’s 69th count and, we are proud of the fact, in past years we had the distinction of holding the world record for the highest number of participants. Although there are fewer participants expected these days the coverage is more complete because we are able to better cover the prime bird locations. Increased population density and changes in the local habitat results in less optimal habitat available for us to monitor. Loss of open and wooded spaces in the area means that over the winter birds are more likely to be found in gardens and where there are bird feeders are located. Consequently, the feeder watchers play a vital role in the success of the winter bird counts. This year’s Edmonton count will take place on Sunday, December 17. A group of local birders will be “bush beating” around the neighborhood as part of the greater Edmonton count. Participants will also be watching their bird feeders from the comfort of their living rooms and through their kitchen windows. If you are interested or need further information on setting up your feeder or bird identification, give me a call. I am the Zone Captain for this area and welcome anyone interested to join us in the area count. Please call or e-mail me for further information. The Edmonton Nature Club website is another important source of information and you can also register on this site. http://edmontonchristmasbirdcount.ca For more information, please contact John at: [email protected] or by phone at 780-436-6598.

or those of you who haven’t had a chance to meet me, F I’m Tim Cartmell, your Ward 9 Councillor. I am humbled and honoured to have been chosen as the Ward 9 representative for City Council. My wife Cathy and I have been lucky to have raised our three Forest of Jewels wonderful kids in southwest Edmonton.. 428 Riverbend Square 780-438-3682 I’ve been a hockey coach, www.forestofjewels.com President of our Area Council, the

Professionally, I have been an engineer for almost three decades, and have had the opportunity to own and operate my own company. I am excited to bring the perspective of a small business owner to the hallways at City Hall. As a community volunteer and resident of Ward 9, I have seen Southwest Edmonton grow, and have seen the challenges that come with that growth. I have seen our ward grow from one community league to ten. The primary focus of my campaign was building better communities, and that will continue to be my focus on City Council. While this means different things to different neighborhoods in our Ward, I heard one primary theme during my campaign - people want their time back. Our communities should be thoughtfully planned out to have the amenities we need right where we live. During the municipal race, I knocked on tens of thousands of doors, and heard again and again the need for thoughtful planning for our neighbourhoods. Residents want to be informed - ahead of time - when changes are being contemplated. And they feel it is the responsibility of the City to keep them informed, or at the very least, provide more and better opportunities for them to inform themselves. When Ward 9 residents go to work each morning, they want solutions for the gridlock that envelops our community, snaking from Terwillegar Drive, Rabbit Hill Road, and the Henday each morning. After a busy day at work and in between racing to hockey practice and dance class, they want to spend their remaining time at home, not in congestion. We need to work towards solutions to our fragile transportation network, in a balanced way that enhances all channels of our system - roads, transit and active Want to start Playschool in January? transportation options. And when it comes time to pay property taxes each year, Ward 9 residents deserve to know that each tax dollar is respected, and goes to the services actually needed to make life better. My commitment to you as a Ward 9 resident is to always respectfully listen to your comments and concerns about municipal issues. Community engagement will be a key focus of mine over the next four years, and I welcome you to get in contact with my office by email at tim. [email protected], or by phone at 780-496-8130.

Are Your Goals Authentic? New Years Resolution By: Jessica Zapata

anuary is the time we reflect and reset for the new calendar year. J But why is it that even with all the best intention, we seem to set the same goals every year? We swear it’s going to be different this time and yet as the new year rolls around, those very same goals top the list each year. Let’s stop the insanity. Break the cycle. Instead of just creating a wish list for 2018, let’s dive a little deeper and create some goals that work for you, not against you. You’ve likely already heard of SMART goals; a goal setting tool that breaks down what you want to achieve into a specific, measureable, actionable, realistic and time-sensitive goal. For example, let’ say your goal for 2018 is to lose weight, here’s what it would look like as a SMART goal: By June 30, 2018, I will lose 20 pounds of body fat by working out four times a week, keeping track of my diet every day, drinking more water and less wine and sleeping seven to nine hours a night. We can see that the goal is specific and measureable to how much body fat you want to lose. It’s actionable as you lay out the steps that you need to take to achieve the goal. Lastly, you have set a deadline to make it timely and realistic as you’ve given yourself six months to achieve it (average healthy weight loss is 0.5 to 2 pounds a week). You may have even done this before and yet still fall short of your carefully crafted goal. But why is that?? My guess is your goals aren’t authentic. They don’t mean enough to you to cause you to follow through on the behaviours required to actually achieve them. Once you have chosen one or two SMART Geneva Luxury Watch Service goals, I want you to run them through the AUTHENTIC test. A = Ask yourself why this goal is important to you. All Fitness Levels According to , to be effective in schools, character education ********** character.org Essentrics Fitness, must involve everyone—school staff, parents, students, and community Essentrics for Seniors members—and be part of every school day. It must be integrated into Essentrics for Teens the curriculum as well as school culture. When this happens and school Age Reversing Classes communities unite around developing character, schools see amazing results. Because students spend so much time in school, schools offer a critically important opportunity to ensure that all students get the support and help they need to reach their full potential. Schools that embrace character education become places people want to be because they bring out the best in everyone. To set up a strong foundation, assistant principal Danny Jeffery attended a national forum on Character Education with teachers Paul Batchelor, Christine Fallowfield and Dustin Kong. “We are very excited to be offering a Character Education program for all of our Grade 10 students at Lillian Osborne High School. This program’s focus and core purpose is to create a positive school culture and to make school a place where students want to be, not just have to be.” says Jeffery. Grade 11 and 12 students will be supporting this program by coming to classes on Grade 10 Character Education Days to facilitate lessons. Students in Grade 10 are also expected to volunteer for 50 hours in the community or school, which further helps build community and character. Some key questions about character for students will be integrated throughout the program, such as “What have you done for others today?” and “What do you do when no one is looking?” A big initiative of the school is to recognize all the great things that are happening and to highlight students who display excellent character. We organized an ORCA (Osborne Recognition Character Assembly) on November 22, that was school-wide. We also invited some staff and students from our neighbouring junior high schools to participate. A highlight was our guest speaker, Andy Thibodeau, (www.andypresentations.com). His message is “Share your Care” and reminds students about the power of simple daily acts of caring by listening, participating, and showing up. We will have two more Osborne Recognition Character Assemblies this school year. As Jeffery says, “We are very excited about this initiative and look forward to SAFETY • RESPECT • PASSION • EVOLUTION • FUN the positive impact it can have on our community. This is something that everyone believes in. If everyone looked at making decisions using their Year Round core values, amazing results will happen! We believe the data will show that providing opportunities and experiences that highlight excellent character Horseback Riding Lessons and embedding core values throughout every area of the school, we will have a community that thrives!” We offer riding lessons for beginners to advanced students on safe and reliable lesson horses.
