This talented group are positive role models and mentors for a younger generation of African Americans. As mentors, they are able to make positive statements to the young people of our churches, to let them know it is possible to pursue their dreams and careers and still be active members of the Adventist church. The foundation they are building will seek to inspire a greater number of our young people to stay in the church and use their talents and gifts for the glory of God and humanity. In the following pages, they will share their passion for life, excellence, education and their church. As graduation day approached, the young man awaited signs that his father had purchased the car. Finally, on the morning of his graduation, his father called him into his private study. His father told him how proud he was to have such a fine son, and told him how much he loved him. He handed his son a beautifully wrapped gift box. Curious, but somewhat disap- pointed, the young man opened the box and found a lovely, leather-bound Bible with the young man's name embossed in gold. Angrily, he raised his voice to his father and said, "With all your money, you give me a Bible?" He stormed out of the house, leaving the Bible. Many years passed and the young man was very successful in business. He had a beautiful home and wonderful family, but realized his father was very old and very ill. He currently serves as director of Publishing Ministry, Spirit of Prophecy, and Voice of Prophecy in Myanmar Union Mission. He and his wife Vanramliani have three daughters and one son. Judson Chhakchhuak is from Mizoram, Northeast India. He holds a Master of Arts degree in Religion degree with an emphasis in the New Testament from the Adventist International Institute of Advanced Studies, the Philippines. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Theology degree from the Adventist University of the Philippines. John Leroy Christian was an Adventist administrator, pastor, missionary, researcher, professor, lieutenant-colonel, and author. Early Life John Leroy Christian was born on October 28, 1900, in Houston, Minnesota, in the United States. He was the second child of Andrew Ernest Christian (March 21, 1870-July 29, 1920) and Bertha K. Christian (April 2, 1878-June 20, 1962) who married on July 27, 1898.1 John Christian’s seven siblings were Hervey, Rolland, Alice, Andrew, Clarence, Paul, and Marie. Unfortunately, two of his siblings died when he was growing up. His sister Alice passed away when he was six years old,2 and his brother Andrew died nearly four years later.3 During Christian’s early years his family moved to Idaho. Brown, Ph.D. Department of Education, General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists ·t. 6840 Eastern Avenue, N.W., Washington, D.C. 20012 i/ .I Foreword In anticipation of the education centennial in 1972 and the publication of a Seventh-day Adventist chronology of education, the General Conference Department of Education started to make inquiries of the world field for historical facts and statistics regarding the various facets of the church program in education. The information started to come in about a year ago. Whlle some of the responses were quite detalled, there were others that were rather general and indefinite. There were gaps and omissions and in several instances conflicting statements on certain events. In view of the limited time and the apparent cessation of incoming materials from the field, a small committee was named with Doctor Walton J. Brown as chairman. It was this committee's responsibility to execute the project in spite of the lack of substantiation of certain information. We believe that this is the first project of its kind in the denomination's history. It is hoped that when the various educators and administrators re­ view the data about their own organizations, they will notify the Department of Education concerning any corrections and additions. They should please include supporting evidence from as many sources as possible. It is hoped that within the next five to ten years a revised edition may replace this first one. It would contain not only necessary changes, but also would be brought up to date.
