Sisters and Cojourners stood together in unity at a Families Belong Together rally in Aberdeen earlier this year. International Day of Peace (above) On Friday, September 21, Sisters, Cojourners, Employees and Presentation People held a prayer service for the International Day of Peace. Participants placed blue stones in our Mary Garden. This representation of the symbol of water as the worldwide source of all life is shared with peoples across the globe. We held the stones in our hands and examined the roles we may have played in causing division and brokenness among people. We asked our Creator God to guide our thoughts toward ways that we may help the lives of impoverished and marginalized people. Let us direct our hearts to opportunities to help remove barriers, use the earth's resources wisely and determine ways that we can speak out against unjust systems and structures. The Nano Farm is a model farm where we raise chickens and cows and have gardens, a fi sh hatchery and a multi-use conference center. Adults and students get hands-on learning as they are taught to use compost for gardening and to raise fi sh. These skills help them to provide a sustainable future for themselves and their children. They are also able to attend workshops in the conference center.

In addition to providing educational opportunities and employable skills, we are able to provide loans for women through the generous funding of the Redmond Loan Fund. Through this initiative, over 2,000 women have been able to establish or enhance a small business. After participating in workshops, women can receive the equivalent of a $100 loan. 15 Leadership Camp

eadership Camp in the Black Hills began as a means L to allow 7th, 8th and 9th grade girls a place where they feel safe to share their feelings, where they strengthen their relationship with God and where the pressures of day-to-day living are shared and lightened. We are also encouraged as many of these young women apply to come back as junior and adult counselors. These young women understand the campers’ journey through adolescence and are willing mentors, embodying Nano’s Mission and Charism and passing on her light. They witness to these girls the importance of their relationship with God and pride in their Latina heritage. They share with the campers their learnings as leaders in their families, church, community and world.

This year, we were blessed to have two wonderful Presentation Sisters from Dubuque join us and serve as Sister-Counselors. They drove all the way from Chicago to camp in the deep woods of Creighton University Retreat Center and also brought along two campers from Chicago. We hosted 58 middle school age Latinas, hailing from Nebraska, Iowa and South Dakota as well as Chicago. This was our largest LIVE camp enrollment to date. The Campers and Sisters express their gratitude to the many persons and groups who help sponsor this enriching experience. “There is no greater happiness than to be in union.”
