What opportunities does a Support Unit student have then, to learn how to interact with other students, to build friendships, and to feel a sense of belonging? While school assemblies and being on the playground at break time are some examples, these occasions are not structured for explicit teaching and learning.

So this year, Ashfield Public School created the opportunity by introducing Collaborative Classrooms, an initiative whereby all Support Unit students enter mainstream classrooms to learn alongside their peers.

The logistics of Collaborative Classrooms has been challenging. Firstly it has required the allocation of school funds to hire four extra Student Learning Support Officers (SLSO). Term 4 is time for Stage One to shine! 2M started leading our Friday assemblies at the end of last term by showcasing the Design Thinking Process. In Week 2, 2G presented a drama skit demonstrating their understanding of the Super Six Comprehension Strategy using the story ‘Who Sank the Boat?’ by Pamela Allen. We still have 1M, 1X, 1P and 1C to host our Friday assemblies and present learning from in class to the school! With every class that runs assembly, they have also been the Class of the Week at Badalya. 2M sold delicious frozen oranges which was perfect for the hot weather in Week 1. We raised $80!!! 2G sold fruit cars that raced off the Badalya counter and were very popular. Both classes have enjoyed the responsibility of being playground Bin Monitors to help instruct students how to correctly dispose of rubbish. Stay tuned to find out what our other Stage One classes plan to sell and how much money we’ve raised. All funds raised will go towards the new House Point sign in the hall. In Week 1, we excitedly started gymnastics with Dance fever Multisport! Students have been learning gymnastics and acrobatic skills such as how to safely balance, jump, land, rotate and swing. Students are loving the opportunity to play in rotational activities using different types of gymnastic equipment.

Stage 2 finally went to Botany Bay as part of the History Unit in Semester One. The students learnt so much about the history of the area and the surrounding environment. They wrote a recount on the excursion which included interesting facts and their favourite activities. The teachers were so proud of the students and so were the National Park Rangers. Please see the many photographs taken on the day and ask your child questions about the excursion.

A Night at the Movies dance spectacular was an amazing event for everyone involved. The students thoroughly enjoyed presenting their dances to their families. A highlight for all students was seeing the teachers perform a dance for the event. Gymnastics is well underway and all our classes are having a great time participating in all activities. This eight week program is a fun way of staying active and helping with core strength. This week our fabulous Year 5 students have nominated themselves and presented speeches in order to be elected as the new Student Representative Council for 2020. This has been a long process and we are super proud of all the students who had a go. Congratulations to the amazing leaders who have been elected! We’re sure you’ll do Ashfield proud! In Week 3, Year 6 were able to participate in the ‘Amazing Me’ workshop. This specialised program aims to empower students with information about puberty and healthy relationships. Students were able to develop skills to make wise and informed decisions. Amazing Me was a great opportunity to remind our Year 6 students how unique, valued and AMAZING they all are. Next week Year 6 are off to Canberra for a three day camp. Everyone is looking forward to exploring all the wonderful sights Canberra has to offer, visiting Old and New Parliament House, The Australian Institute of Sport and Questacon. We are looking forward to spending a wonderful three days together! It’s that time of year where Ashfield Public School hosts its annual Bring & Buy Sale. This year it will be held in Week 5 on Wednesday 13th November. This gives the students an opportunity to sell their pre loved items from home and most importantly baked goods. Please start collecting and baking.
