Paulinus of Nola Paulinus of Nola Paulinus of Nola (also known as Paolino di Nola; full name, Pontius Meropius Anicius Paulinus)[1] (ca. 354 Bordeaux – 22 June 431 Nola) was a Latin poet and letter- writer, and a convert to the Christian faith. His renuncia- tion of wealth and a senatorial career in favour of a Chris- tian ascetic and philanthropic life was held up as an exam- ple by many of his contemporaries, including Augustine, Jerome, Martin of Tours, and Ambrose. After his con- version he wrote to his friend and teacher, the poet Au- sonius, affirming his friendship but insisting on the prior- ities of his new life. He and his wife settled at Nola near Naples, where he wrote poems in honor of St. Felix and corresponded with Christian leaders throughout the Ro- man Empire. After his wife’s death he became Bishop of Nola, and was invited to help resolve the disputed elec- tion of Pope Boniface I. Therasia died some time between 408 and 413, and shortly afterwards Paulinus received episcopal ordina- tion. Paulinus died at Nola on 22 June 431. The following year the presbyter Uranus wrote his De Obitu Paulini, an ac- count of the death and character of the saint. 1.1 Influence Already during his governorship Paulinus had developed a fondness for the 3rd-century martyr, St. Felix of Nola.[3] Felix was a minor saint of local importance and patronage whose tomb had been built within the local necropolis at Cimitile, just outside the town of Nola. The research has been based on the letters of Ambrose of Milan, Jerome of Stridon, Augus- tine of Hippo, and Paulinus of Nola. As we know, letters were a very effective medium of the early Christian public relations, for they were vastly copied, read aloud in the circles of noblemen and highly influential in creating the symbolic sphere. The form and style of communication e.g. the metaphors used in trumpeting the new noble Christian can give us insight not only into the art of rhetoric but also into the epistemological rami- fications, imaginary schemes that constituted thinking of the aristocracy in times when Christian life became an attractive choice. The goal of this study is to present the detailed picture and systematization of the various modes in which conversion was treated as a literary theme in the correspondence of the studied period. The article focuses on two different literary phenomena: 1. The rhetoric of persuading to conver- sion; 2. The literary descriptions of famous aristocratic conversions. It shows that in the analyzed letters2 two types of metaphors prevailed: those presenting conversion as avoidance of danger, specifically of shipwrecking or falling into slavery, and those painting the image of the converted as a true philosopher.

Works of Nicetas of Remesiana, 4. Nicetas and Arianism. The bishop of Remesiana - Nicetas was probably born in 335 AD, died in 414. He was a bishop in the years 366-414. Both in the Catholic Church and in the Orthodox Church he is considered to be a saint. He was “redi- scovered” in the last centuries. Some ancient texts, including the Order of Catechizing, considered Bishop of Remesiana to be one of the fathers of the Church, together with Hilary of Poitiers and Jerome. Theologians and phi- losophers recommend reading the works of Nicetas. Gennadius of Massilia mentions Nicetas in his catalog of writers as “Nicetas Romatianæ civitatis episcopus,” to whom he assigns several works on religious themes1. In Mar- tyrologium Romanum of 1585, Baronius mentions the bishop and the date of his memorial: Nicetas episc. In Dacia 7 Ianu2. Later, the works of Bishop of Remesiana were often attributed to other authors. Some identified him, among others, with Nicetas of Aquileia (454-485) or Nicetius of Trier, e.g. B. Rasponio in the work Sancti Nicete episcopi Aquilejensis3. In VetusMarty- rologium Romanum,published before the Second Vatican Council, the me- morial of Saint Nicetas fell on January 7.     View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Apollo 1 The cleansing of the temple in early medieval Northumbria CONOR O’BRIEN ABSTRACT While the attitudes of Stephen of Ripon and Bede toward church-buildings have previously been contrasted, this paper argues that both shared a vision of the church as a holy place, analogous to the Jewish temple and to be kept pure from the mundane world. Their similarity of approach suggests that this concept of the church-building was widespread amongst the Northumbrian monastic elite and may partially reflect the attitudes of the laity also. The idea of the church as the place of eucharistic sacrifice probably lay at the heart of this theology of sacred place. Irish ideas about monastic holiness, traditional liturgical language and the native fascination with building in stone combined with an interest in ritual purity to give power to this use of the temple-image which went on to influence later Carolingian attitudes to churches. Ecclesiastical and spiritual life in early eighth-century Northumbria is often understood in terms of division and disagreement, a stark contrast frequently being seen to have separated the ideas of the Wilfridian party from those of their opponents. Very real differences undoubtedly existed concerning issues such as monasticism and the episcopate, the nature of sanctity and the difficult question of how to deal with the Northumbrian Church’s Columban past.1 But equally real similarities united the various ecclesiastical parties, who did after all share the same societal and religious context.

He says that he rst heard this saintly man praised greatly, but then learnt from trustworthy resources of concerns about his doctrine of grace. When Pelagius, upon arriving in Africa, came to Hippo, Augustine unfortunately missed him and met him only briey at anti-Donatist conferences in Carthage.1 He was, however, much concerned after reading Pelagius’ book Denatura, which was brought to him by two former disciples of Pelagius, Timasius and Jacobus, and in which it was said that God’s grace consists of human good nature, endowed in its creation with the gift of the free choice of the will, and possibly also of the divine law and forgiveness of the penitent. This led Augustine to write a trea- tise against him (De natura et gratia), where, however, he did not mention his name in order to provide the saintly man with a chance of emending his teaching without causing a public nuisance.2 He also addressed a polite let- ter to Pelagius in which he invited him to adopt a position of humility and gratitude to God.3 This account is amended with an interesting detail in Augustine’s late work De dono perseverantiae: here it is said that back in Rome, before he left for Africa, Pelagius was alarmed by the motto of Augustine’s spirituality expressed in his Confessions, “Grant what you command, and command what you will,” and had an argument over its accuracy with an unnamed bishop, who mentioned it in his presence.4 This event may presumably 1 De gest.

This calendar is used by authors of ordines and other liturgical aids published to foster the celebration of the liturgy in our country. The calendar is based upon the General Roman Calendar, promulgated by Pope Paul VI on February 14, 1969, subsequently amended by Pope John Paul II, and the Proper Calendar for the Dioceses of the United States of America, approved by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.1 This calendar has been updated to reflect the names and titles of the various liturgical days in conformity with the Roman Missal, Third Edition.
