Dear Parents, Old Greys and Friends of The Grey

2020 will be remembered by every single Grey pupil and parent as the year of Corona Covid-19. While the necessary steps taken to stop the spread of the virus have been very disruptive, the Grey community has truly rallied around. Thank you to all our boys, staff, parents and wider community for rallying and supporting us in our efforts.

Over this past week I have published a number of advisories about the Covid-19 virus and its impact on the school. I encourage you to please study these as they have important information about events that have been cancelled as well as issues regarding travel and exposure to the virus.

We anticipate that that we will not recoup all teaching days lost and have therefore made work available for boys to do. Please let your sons have a bit of a holiday, they need it. Thereafter make sure that they do the work that has been sent home. At the moment the first day of term 2 will be on 14 April. We will keep you up to date if the start of Term 2 is shifted. In case this does happen, we are being proactive and all our teachers are preparing work for this eventuality.

What is clear is that it is not going to be “business as usual”. Men of The Grey are famous for performing in the face of adversity. Our schools proud history teaches us that we have been through even tougher challenges and I am confident that our young men will rise to this occasion as well.

Despite the Covid-19 outbreak, we have had a good and busy start to year. There were a number of significant changes that we made to the internal running of the school.

 The introduction of the 10 day cycle has been well received and is providing a good predictable rhythm to our academic programme.  The introduction of our tutor system had a few hiccups at the outset. These have been ironed out and our tutors are beginning to get to know their boys well. The tutor system has been introduced to bring the teachers and boys closer. In order to best serve the interests of each and every boy, it is essential that we as a school know our boys well. The tutor system aims at achieving this.  This year we also introduced a week of cycle tests. This was to counter the situation that happened in the past where, at times, there were boys writing 3 on one day while still having to do homework and complete assignments. Having a designated test week also brought predictability to the testing programme that allowed teachers and boys to plan in advance.  We are also in the throes of introducing a new database and educational management programme, Engage. This will centralize our management activities in the school and enable closer monitoring of our pupils. Very importantly it fits into our drive for better communication and more transparency. If you have not yet registered on the portal please do so as soon as possible. We have broken our rollout of Engage into various stages. The first of these has been administrative, financial and academic. By now you will have been able to see that we have the correct details about your sons, you will have received your monthly statements and this term you will also begin receiving the academic reports. The next stages will see us monitoring the extracurricular programme and updating the Daybook.

Reunion Weekend:

Term 1 Newsletter 2020 P a g e | 3 of 28

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Reunion Weekend has been postponed to the beginning of August.

HIGHLIGHTS THIS TERM:

Academic Dinner A highlight at the start of the term was the Academic Dinner where we celebrate the top three of each grade (results from November 2019 exams). The guest speaker was Dr Emlyn Flint (Old Grey of 2005), now a Dr of Actuarial Science.

THE TOP THREE WERE: Grade 8: Dane Archibald, Jayden Eaton, Mark Brombacher;

Grade 9: Daniel Ristow, Kian Claassen, Devon Lister;

Grade 10: Joshua Stephenson, Luke Oberholster, Zach Heynes;

Grade 11: Nafi Alam, Russell Lister, Pranesh Raga;

Grade 12: Ben Roode, Troy van der Westhuysen and Caleb Dryden.

The Grade 8 Induction Ceremony was held in the 2nd week of term after the Grade 8s returned from their orientation camp.

Another highlight this term was our New Parents’ Welcome Evening when new parents met

Term 1 Newsletter 2020 P a g e | 4 of 28 our teachers and governing body members.

Applications for 2021 started with three Open Evenings held early in February. We are busy processing many applications and hope to notify parents shortly.

Various visits to outlying areas, Addo & Somerset East, were held in conjunction with our junior school and sister schools, both to address prospective parents, meet current parents on their own turf and Old Greys.

As usual the Proms ‘neath the Tower was another wonderful rendition from our Music Department. The standard of excellence was, once again, superb!

Myself and our deputies, Anton Scholtz & Chris Townsin, attended the Annual National IBSC Conference (International Boys’ Schools Coalition) hosted by St Andrew’s College in Bloemfontein. It is always good to network with other heads of leading schools in the country.

Unfortunately, after consultation with the ECDOE, we had to postpone the School Governing Body parents’ by-election. The measures taken to combat the spread of the Corona Covid-19 virus really are far reaching and disruptive. As soon as we resume school next term we will send out another notice with the date.

We are grateful to our current parents, educators and staff who serve on the School Governing Body:  PARENTS: Mr Garth Morris (Chairman), Dr Aydin Vehbi (Treasurer), Mr Anand Naidoo and Mrs Liesl Nienaber  EDUCATORS: Mesdames Linda Carr and Judith Parfitt, and Mr Chris Townsin  STAFF: Mr Carlo Heydenreich  PUPILS: Liyema Matyolweni and Oliver Roode  SECRETARY: Mrs Cheryl Crulci (co-opted)  CO-OPTED MEMBERS: Messrs Anton Scholtz, Neil Bielby, Andrew Masterson (Boarding House) Christopher Arnold, Mike Mallett and Grant Howard.

Siya Kolisi recently visited Port Elizabeth again as part of his “trophy” country-wide visits.

Some of our boys, Lathe Nqebe, Sivewa Zondani and Liyema Matyolweni met our Old Grey, Siya Kolisi, at the SABC on his recent visit to Port Elizabeth.

ACADEMIC MATTERS

MATRIC RESULTS 2019

November 2019 saw the twelfth set of Matrics schooled under the NCS-FET Curriculum reach the end of the high school line. Our Grade 12 class of 2019 (183 pupils) made a very good showing and, after re-marking and re-writing procedures have been concluded, we confidently expect the above statistics to improve still further. Our current Matriculants have been challenged to improve the Bachelors pass rate even more. The Matrics of 2020 will know what is expected of them – show us what you CAN do this year!

We were particularly proud of Ben Roode who earned second place in the metro for his results at the end of 2019. His marks included an impressive 99% for Information Technology and 93% for Accounting as well as five other distinctions.

Aggregates do not form part of the Department's reporting procedure, but no fewer than 23 of our Grade 12 candidates attained a pass level equivalent to Full Academic Colours ('A'-aggregates) at Grey: Derek Bakker, Mandlenkosi Boltina, Miles Boucher, Arnold Coetzee, Matthew de Lauwere, Thomas Dreyer, Caleb Dryden, Raa'iq Fataar, Estiaan Hough, Jonathan Hughes, Ricky King, Jonathan Kruger, Mitch Lovemore, Kiran Marriott-Watson, Sachin Naidoo, Liam Oberholster, Jason Porter, Theo Repinz, Benjamin Roode, Luke Roode, Darian Smith, Troy van der Westhuysen and Cameron Venter. These young men have every right to be very proud of their efforts. There were a further 37 boys who attained an Academic Half Colours award.

Unofficially, based on aggregates of seven core subjects, Benjamin Roode, Caleb Dryden and Troy van der Westhuysen were our top three candidates. Benjamin Roode and Caleb Dryden achieved 7 distinctions, while four Matrics (Troy van der Westhuysen, Sachin Naidoo, Cameron Venter and Jason Porter) achieved 6 distinctions each. Jonathan Kruger, Jonathan Hughes, Derek Bakker and Darian Smith attained five distinctions each.

There were, in total, 223 subject distinctions (13 in Mathematics, 15 in Physical Sciences, 9 in History, 14 in Afrikaans First Additional Language, 15 in English Home Language, 4 in Life Sciences, 10 in Information Technology, 10 in Accounting, 6 in Geography, 9 in Engineering Graphics & Design, 14 in Mathematical Literacy, 4 in Music, 1 in Business Studies and 95 in Life Orientation) and the subject pass rate was an impressive 97,9%!

ACADEMIC COLOURS AWARDS – 1ST TERM 2020

Based on 2019 Grade 11 results:

Colours – Nicholas Keevy, Lusanele Nelani, Tom Heath, Glynn Rudman, Benjamin Taylor, Sebastian Hammerschmidt.

Half Colours – Asante de Lange, Reece Hancocks, Kellan Jones, Frederick de Jager, Nicholas de Souza, Tristan Baines, Mark Herselman, Nicolas Wise, Adam Bowers, Christopher Finn.

SUPPORT CLASSES

Support classes are run from Monday to Thursday between 14:15 and 15:00 before sports practices start. There are Support Classes available in English, Afrikaans, isiXhosa, Mathematics, Physical Sciences, Life Sciences, Accounting and ED/EGD. Please encourage your sons to make use of these classes – they are offered at no charge and can help to consolidate work covered in class or catch up work that has been missed due to illness or sports commitments.

SUBJECT CHANGES

In Grade 10 (2019), a maximum of two subjects may be changed, subject to the approval of the school and if it is deemed to be in the pupil's best interest to do so. The deadline for subject change requests is the end of the second term. However, the school would certainly not look favourably on a pupil wishing to change two subjects at this stage, because that would imply that little care was taken by the pupil and his parents with regard to his subject choice last year, at the end of Grade 9.

It is, therefore, imperative that parents and pupils ensure that sensible subject choices are made towards the end of Grade 9, as it may not be possible to do much about it a year or two down the line. It should be borne in mind that prospective changes may not be practicable because of internal factors such as class sizes and staffing issues.

JUNE EXAMINATIONS

Please note that the Paper 3 examinations for Home Languages and First Additional Languages will be written on 28 and 29 April. These examinations form part of the June examination schedule.

Much of the planning for next term is under discussion, depending on what is announced by the Department of Education with regard to the alteration of the school holidays in June/July. As soon as the rest of the test and June examination dates are finalised, these will be communicated to boys and parents.

An Examination Booklet detailing the rules and requirements for examinations as well as the examinable scope of the content in each subject will be issued to each pupil next term. This will be loaded on to the D6. Please ensure that you and your son read the contents thoroughly.

Term 1 Newsletter 2020 P a g e | 7 of 28

ABSENCE FROM SCHOOL DURING EXAMINATIONS OR CONTROLLED TESTS (VERY IMPORTANT)

Parents are requested not to make holiday or other arrangements during scheduled sessions of examinations or controlled tests. It is an extremely disruptive practice and is very open to abuse. As detailed in the school rules (#24 – page 30 of school calendar; see also page 18), a medical certificate must be submitted after any period of absence during exams or controlled (grade) tests.

PROMOTION/PROGRESSION REQUIREMENTS

Grades 8 & 9 – candidates must offer the nine official GET subjects and pass eight (provided that the SBA component of the ninth subject has been completed); they must obtain 50% for English (or Afrikaans) Home Language, 40% for Afrikaans or isiXhosa First Additional Language, 40% for Mathematics, 40% in any three of the other subjects, and 30% in two of the remaining subjects. Immigrant pupils may be exempted from passing their FAL, but that will count as their ninth (failed) subject – SBA requirements must still be met. In all subjects, the SBA component and the final examination component will respectively count 40% and 60% of the promotion mark.

Grades 10/11/12 – candidates must offer seven subjects as prescribed (HL, FAL or second HL, Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy, Life Orientation plus three other subjects) and obtain 40% in three subjects (one of which is HL), 30% in three other subjects and a complete SBA component in the seventh (failed) subject. In most subjects, the SBA component and the final examination component will respectively count 25% and 75% of the promotion mark, except for Life Orientation (100% and 0% - externally moderated).

FET REGISTRATION & IDENTITY DOCUMENTS

The registration process for Grades 9/10/11/12 is underway. It should be understood that, under FET regulations, a candidate's identity number is a vital part of this process – it is, therefore, essential that each Grey boy is in possession of his identity number (updated from the birth certificate, if necessary) from the earliest stage possible in high school.

All pupils, irrespective of grade, are urged to apply to Home Affairs for their ID cards as soon as it is possible. The identity number is an integral component of Departmental registration, from as early as March of the Grade 9 year. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT!

PARENTS’ MEETINGS: TERM 2

There are two Parents’ Meetings scheduled for Term 2 with Grade 12 and Grade 8. These meetings will be rescheduled to a later date once the school reopens again in the second term. These meetings will provide parents with an opportunity to see each of your son’s subject teachers to discuss his progress thus far in the year.

Parents are welcome to contact the following teachers at any stage if they would like information on their child’s academic progress:

 Subject Teacher: Student performance/progress, class material  Subject Head: Student performance/progress, subject material if you have already met with the Subject Teacher  Grade Head: Grade queries re overall academic performance/exams (all subjects), subject changes

Congratulations to the following Grey musicians who have been selected for the 2020 Wind Orchestra course and performances that take place over the Easter holidays: Cael Esau, Chad Jackson, Tyler Horrmann, Soyama Witbooi, Joel Offerman, Dane Iverson, Kamvelihle Sanqela and Nathan McAllum.

As special mention of valuable Community Service carried out by Mrs Lyon and the Grey Voices, who entertained throughout a well- attended Valentine’s Ladies Breakfast, in aid of raising funds for the education of underprivileged children.

Special Congratulations to the Grey Violin Concertmaster, Denovan Jefta, who has successfully auditioned for the Eastern Cape Philharmonic Orchestra, and has been awarded a permanent member position in the Second Violin Section. This is an outstanding achievement. Denovan follows in the footsteps of old Greys such as Bonga Mosola (Trumpet) and Tiago Vital (Tuba), among others in the more distant past, who were also awarded full positions in the ECPO during the time that they were scholars at Grey. The membership of our regional orchestra continues to be considerably populated with Old Grey musicians.

Congratulations to Hunter Leonard, who on emergency short notice, was called upon to replace the lead guitarist for the Annual Proms Concert of the Eastern Cape Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Richard Cock. It is a credit to him that he has the skill, competency, and big-match-temperament to be called upon at this confident level of performance. Excellent!

The Annual Proms ‘Neath the Tower was held on Sunday 8 March, and the ever-threatening Term 1 Newsletter 2020 P a g e | 10 of 28 rain held off just enough for us to complete our full program for a full-house audience that enjoyed themselves thoroughly.

Congratulations to Mrs Taylor and the Grey String Orchestra, for hosting a very successful Strings Festival in the de Waal Hall on Thursday 12 March. The event was of extremely high musical standard, and it converged all Junior and High Schools in our region that run stringed instrument programmes, and this is a valuable initiative for future preservation.

The Grey Music Department has hosted two Trivia Evening fundraisers in aid of music tours, and they have been great fun and a great success. Special thanks to Mrs Faye Eck for her excellent administrative planning and organisation, as well as to generous parents and friends who donated Prizes and lucky-draw items to add to the fun of the evenings.

Culture week During the first week in March we had a successful Culture week. Each class in Afrikaans HL and EAT competed in cultural sport during one period per class group. The boys enjoyed Afrikaans traditional “driebeenresies”, “eierresies”, “ toutrek” and touch rugby. Each day the winning team in each grade was awarded a prize. Cultural music was presented in the restaurant and quad during break time. Afrikaans, English, isiXhosa and Indian music were played.

The Quiz evening was presented in three languages: Afrikaans, English and isiXhosa. A special word of thanks to Hlumelo Mooi who translated the questions into isiXhosa and Nafi Alam for compiling the questions.

The Public Speaking winners were Iwan Swart (seniors) and Wian Oberholster (juniors). The winner of the Graad 11 Potjiekos competition was the isiXhosa group. The Mnr. Grey evening was a hit, as always. The theme was “Sirkus”. The winners were: Mnr. Grey Tom Smith; 1st Prince Lusanele Nelani; and 2nd Prince Sean Karlson. Mnr. Persoonlikheid was Tom Smith and Mnr. Fotogenies was Calvin Volschenk.

INTRAMURALS

Blood Bank

The Blood Peer Promoters would like to thank the school for the fantastic effort during the last Blood Bank held on Monday 27 January. A total of 74 units was collected, with Meriway accounting for 27 of the units. Well done, Meriway.

The committee of Blood Peer Promoters attended the district Peer Promoter Training hosted at Grey High on Thursday 30 January. Ms Derryn Fuller, the SANBS Donor Educator, addressed approximately 150 peer promoters from high schools throughout the Nelson Mandela Metro.

The next Blood Bank will be held in the de Waal Hall on Monday 6 April from 09:00 until 14:30. All , parents and friends of The Grey are welcome to donate.

Community Service

The annual coin laying was held on the 13th of March, and this year each house had to place its coins on fabric representing the house-colour. All donations were in favour of the Ikhala Trust, a non-profit organisation operating throughout the Eastern Cape. The Trust encourages self- reliance in communities by promoting and supporting food gardens, and helping communities to Term 1 Newsletter 2020 P a g e | 11 of 28 unlock skills and talents of its members.

Our first term collections were well supported. During January and February we collected 47 tubes of toothpaste and during March, soap was collected. This, together with other goodies, will be donated to different beneficiaries later in the year.

Gaming Club

The competitive side of the gaming club has had a very busy first term taking part in the first leg of the High School E-Sport League. Three teams were entered into the league. Two sides took part in Counter Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO) and one side in League of Legends (LoL). Both the CS:GO sides had a very successful term, both sides only losing one game. This will put them in a very favourable position going into the second leg which takes place in the third term. This leg will be the qualifying leg to attend nationals in October.

Unfortunately, the League of Legends team has struggled but progress has been made with each passing game and we look forward to Term 3.

Grey Matter

The Grey Matter Team have been hard at work in ensuring that this term’s edition is filled with informative and entertaining articles. Included are the interviews with the Prefect body, which is always a highly anticipated section for the boys to read. The edition also includes an exciting competition that involves some creativity on the part of the reader.

The Term 1 edition is the final one for our current Matrics and leadership team. They have carried the torch well. Congratulations and thank you to Editor Nafi Alam, Deputy Editor Daniel Reardon, Design Editors Zach Heynes and Rohan Naidoo, and all the Grade 12s for their contributions and dedication. We shall officially say farewell at the Grey Matter lunch in April.

Due to the disruptions, and with many of the boarders leaving campus before the final day of school, the Term 1 edition will be distributed early next term.

First Aid

First Aid was extremely involved from day one. We did the following events: IH Athletics, Junior IH athletics, various Waterpolo Festivals, IH Gala, Junior and Senior Hockey and RugbyTrials, IH X-Country and finally Level 1 and 3 training. We also did duties for the matches against Brandwag.

The following boys have received their Level 1 Certificates: Ivan Swart, Justin Paris, Zubenathi Skosana, Seth Charlewood, Brayden Meyer, Joshua Drinkwater, Joel Offerman, Siyanda Magina, Nande Magugu, Luphawu Yaya, Bruce Holtzhausen, Masakhe Minnie, Lulibo Vetyeka, Matthew De Freitas, Ordell Matonsi, Jordan Smith, Alessandro Recchia, Connor Tessendorf, Juan Heydenreich, Reece Van Eyck, Sinoyolo Mabuza, Samuel Dickinson, Andrew Huang, Vincent Repinz, Zimi Peter, Daniel Tufts, Daniel Szczawinski and Mihlali Ngwekazi.

The following boys have received their Level 3 Certificates: Jarred Gardiner, Buso Yako, Seth Van Staden, Nicholas Upton, Lemtha Sonamzi, Liyema Langa, Jorge Stickells, Craig Van Loggerenberg, Kyle Williams, Sebastian Hammerschmidt, Gary Watchurst, Luke

Norris, Justin Nash, Andrew Trollope, Lutho Tumela and Josh Saayman.

Grey Union Newsletter

Grey Union experienced another busy term. We were involved with Valentine’s Day card sales, our cocktail evening with a guest speaker where we awarded our junior members their badges and announced the Junior Committee: Rohan Naidoo, Kavir Dullabh, Tom Smith, George van Heerden, Daniel Butler and Joshua Stephenson.

We are looking forward to an extremely busy second term which will help us raise funds and reach out towards the community.

Preservation Society

The eco-warriors have had a productive first term assisting with environmental action in our metro. The Preservation Society team has spent two Saturdays mornings clearing the infestation of rooikrantz wattle from the upper Sacramento trail on the dunes above Sardinia Bay. Hard work in the hot sun and some serious muscle power has earned them the respect of the Wildlife and Environment Society of (WESSA) as they tackle this ecological threat.

Two beach clean-ups, one at Wells Estate and one along the western stretch of Pollock Beach, have ensured that over 400 bags of litter did not end up in our ocean and that both beaches are cleaner and safer for the public to enjoy. Our partnership with Collegiate Girls High School for these beach clean-ups has also been valuable in building a good sense of community with our sister school.

Our toughest clean-up this year was along the lower Baakens River Valley in South End where 160 bags of litter were collected from the valley preventing the river and sea from being polluted with yet more plastic.

The Society’s activities are easily organised with the involvement of our new committee. Congratulations to 2020 Chairman Asante de Lange, Deputy Nick de Souza and new committee members Justin Friend, Stefan Jachens and Craig van Loggerenberg on their hard work. We look forward to our fundraising project for the Animal Welfare Society in Term 2 as well as participating in the national “Spekboom Challenge”. Our partnership with WESSA for environmental action in the Baakens Valley and along our shoreline will continue and we encourage all members and their friends and family to join these worthwhile initiatives.

President’s Award

The President’s Award Society had a number of informative sessions this term during which ideas for community service and hikes were shared. Brett Rimmer, Liam Humphrey and Nicholas de Souza will be representing Grey on the Youth Committee and we look forward to a successful year under the leadership of the new programme manager of the Eastern Cape, Qhama Dyakala.

Programming Club

The programming club has had a number of meetings on Friday afternoons this term where,

Term 1 Newsletter 2020 P a g e | 13 of 28 amongst other things, the program for the year was discussed. The highlight of the term for all the boys involved was the taking apart and putting together again of older but still working PCs. It was insightful to see how it is put together and everyone involved thoroughly enjoyed it. We are planning to have more practical sessions in the second term.

Quiz

During the term the Quiz team won all three rounds in the Quiz League. Well done boys.

SCA

The SCA has had a busy first term, starting with a welcome event for our new Grade 8s. Once again we combined our welcome with the new parents’ social. This was a great success and we had an excellent turnout. The SCA committee played games with and got to know the newest Grey men informally during the evening. In SCA, our focus is always God and bringing our Grey men into a closer relationship with God. The committee have continued to run morning meetings every morning before school, in the restaurant. A smaller group meets every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at second break in G13. Wednesday breaks have been devoted to the Youth Alpha Program, where first breaks are spent watching a video on a specific topic regarding our Christian faith and second breaks are devoted to group discussions on the video.

Sadly our bi-annual Laps For Hope Charity Relay Marathon has been postponed until further notice, but all the preparation will be worth the effort when we eventually run the event. Another date to diarise is our annual SCA camp, which takes place from 5th to 7th June this year (more details to follow next term).

Sight and Sound

A number of juniors joined the club this year. We held 3 photographic workshops of an hour each with photographer Fabian Smith, and two film workshops of two hours each facilitated by The Green Room. Congratulations to Glynn Rudman and Justin Dickie who were awarded Full Colours, and Kyle Seale awarded Half Colours.

Society report: Grey Snare

On Valentine’s Day we had our annual event with Collegiate where each Gr 9 pupil made a Valentine’s card (in Afrikaans!). Our Grey gentlemen presented the girls with original poetry and a straw filled with sherbet with the message “You are Xstraw-dinary” and we received in turn the most beautiful cards and a Fizzer each.

Society report: Afrikaans-vereniging

In January we presented an ATKV public speaking workshop for pupils and one for judges in the library. The respected Dr Elbie Adendorff from the University of Stellenbosch presented the courses.

SPORT COLOURS AWARDS

All Colours awards have been postponed until next term due to the early closing.

Basketball

Grey Basketball is going from strength to strength, with the largest number of players the sport has ever had. The 1st Team won The PE Comets U18 Tournament and came 2nd in the Kingswood College Eastern Cape U19 Championships.

Hockey

Five of our hockey teams participated in three festivals this weekend: 1st Team at the Tony Godding Festival in East London, 16B and 14A teams at the Westering U16 Co-Ed and the 14B and C teams Alex U14 Co-Ed Festivals with all teams registering a solid set of results.

The 1st XI got their season off to a great start, winning all four matches at the Tony Godding Festival: vs Cambridge won 4-2; vs Hudson Park won 2-1; vs St Andrews (BFN) won 4-0 and vs Menlo Park won 4-0.

CRICKET

Brilliant is an understatement as to how the 1st Term of 2020 went for the Cricketers at the Grey.

Grey had 6 boys represent the EP Schools’ Team at the National U18 Khaya Majola Cricket Week in December, where Eastern Province won the tournament for the first time since 2003. Luke Beaufort and Nicholas Keevy were chosen in the SA Schools’ Cricket Team and they were also the top 2 run scorers at the week: Tiaan van Vuuren made the SA Colts’ Team.

Term 1 Newsletter 2020 P a g e | 16 of 28

Luke won the Batsman of the Week, Player of the Week and was named as the SA School Captain for 2019. This is the 2nd year in a row where Grey has had the top run scorer at the Khaya Majola U18 Cricket Week.

Luke Beaufort and Tiaan van Vuuren represented the SA U19 team in the World Cup held in SA. Nicholas Keevy (Captain), Jade Smith, George van Heerden and Josh Stephenson were chosen to represent the Warriors U19 Cubs Team at the U19 Franchise Week in January held in Stellenbosch.

The 1st XI played 11 Time Cricket fixtures, including the Grey Festival in Bloemfontein this term against the top schools in SA. They won 10 and drew only 1 match, leaving them ranked number 1 in the country for most of the first term. They also played 10 x T20 matches this term, winning 7 and losing 3. The won the Warriors T20 section, by beating St Andrew’s in the EP Final and Queen’s in the franchise final. The 1st XI then represented the Warriors franchise at the Cricket South Africa National U18 T20 Tournament in Pretoria, where we enjoyed mixed fortunes, winning two and losing 3 matches.

There were a lot of outstanding performances from all the cricket teams and plenty of 100s and 5 wicket hauls taken during the season from 1st XI through to U14E.

The end of season Powerade Grey Bash 2020 was once again a highlight of the season, with the boys enjoying three days of fun, exciting and tough cricket. The vibe and atmosphere around the ground was nothing short of amazing and the feedback from everyone was superb. Space Market Strikers, Captained by Josh Voigt, were the eventual winners beating the Pam Golding/Greyvensteins Hurricanes in the final. Jean Upman was named as the Junior MVP and Josh Voigt was named as the Senior MVP/Player of the tournament The Hurricanes were brilliantly coached/mentored by Dave Callaghan and Mr Erasmus during the Bash. A huge thank you to all the sponsors and especially the team owners who make this very special event possible each year. The funds are used to continually improve our facilities and cricket program each year and build on the wonderful reputation that Grey High School has as a cricketing school.

We had a young Old Boy, Tristan Stubbs, made his 1st class debut this year. Dave Callaghan (Captain) and Pieter “Striker” Strydom represented the SA over 50 team that played in the recent World Cup over 50 Tournament in Cape Town. A special mention and congratulations to Old Boy, Lutho Sipamla, who recently made his ODI Protea debut against England. It was another very proud day for everyone at the Grey.

A huge thank you to all the coaches for their unbelievable time and effort that they put into their various teams and a big thank you to all the supporters and especially the parents, who travel the length and breadth of the country watching and following the fortunes of the Grey teams.

Golf

Term 1 Newsletter 2020 P a g e | 17 of 28

5 Grey Teams took part in the Katberg Invitational. The Grey 4th Team dominated affairs and won the B-division with the Grey 5th Team finishing strongly in the final round to claim second place in the B-division.

In a very closely contested affair, the Selborne 1st Team managed to win the A-division with the Grey 2nd Team finishing in a strong second place. The Grey 1st Team finished in a disappointing third place.

The first five Golf teams took part in the Fynbos invitational that was played at Fynbos Estate.

The Grey 4th team consisting of Ross de Villiers, Oliver Harrow, Abongile Mehlo and Jon Hobson dominated the B-section to win by 5 points over second place Nico Malan. The Grey 5th team produced a solid performance and finished in 6th place overall.

Special mention must be made of Charles Rose-Innes who had a hole in one on Saturday. This was Charles’ second hole in one and he is only in Grade 8 - may there be many more!

EP Representation: The following boys have been selected as members of the EP U15 Team to take part in Katberg Inter-provincial during the March holiday: Jean Upman (Captain); Adam Brown; Louis van der Walt, Tom Hobson and Jon Hobson. Unfortunately, this was cancelled.

Mountain Biking

Mountain biking continues to grow in popularity. The term was initiated with a Family Mountain Bike Weekend. This was held at the Sandriver Getaways. A “glamping” weekend was enjoyed by 30 riders and parents. The Saturday involved a 14km hike up the Sandriver. The afternoon was a 20km mountain bike ride along the Elands River Road. On Sunday the group tackled the challenging single track mountain bike trail that has been built on the Sandriver Getaways farm. The camp gave the opportunity particularly for the new grade 8 boys and parents to get to know one another prior to a busy season.

25 of our riders participated in the Herald Addo Mountain Bike Challenge. The riders had the opportunity to ride the 30km, 60km or 80km (dependent on their age group). Top Results:  Ceajay Bosman finishing 7th overall (out of 150) and 5th senior male finisher in the 80km event  60km event : Bradley Bosman finished 7th overall and 2nd junior; Drake Loubser finished 8th overall and 3rd junior; Justin Dames finished 9th overall and 4th Junior; Callum McEwan finished 17th overall and 2nd Youth; Cade Hoffman finished 36th overall and 3rd Youth; Rowan Farrell finished 41st overall and 4th Youth; Jarryd Brickhill finished 45th overall and 4th Junior. Tennis

Merrifield Boys Tournament in East London. A busy term started with a win for the 1st Team, beating Grens, Merrifield, St Andrews and Selborne.

 vs St Andrew’s: With a number of the top seeded boys playing in the U/15 Team, the Senior Team went down 4 – 8 to St Andrew’s at home, while the U15s game in Grahamstown was rained out.

 vs Kingswood: The seniors played in Grahamstown drew 6 all while the U/15’s, playing at home, won 12 – 0.

Selborne/ Clarendon Mixed Doubles Tournament: Playing with our sister school, Collegiate, we beat Queen’s/ DHS, Selborne/Clarendon B, Merrifield and Pearson, but lost to Selborne/Clarendon A in the finals, to finish in 2nd place.

The League matches were played every Thursday afternoon and all three teams eagerly await the final results.

Rugby

Many of our rugby teams managed to get an early season match this past weekend. The age group A-Teams all registered good wins over Brandwag, unfortunately the 1st XV lost narrowly 10-17 to Brandwag at the Day.

After weeks of preparation, sadly the season has been put on hold.

Rowing

The second half of the season began on 6 January with the annual Rowing Camp. This year we were back in Port Alfred, training on the Kowie River. We welcomed 23 U14 rowers – one of our largest influxes in years.

The purpose of the camp is to teach the new boys as much as possible about the sport, and ultimately get them ‘race ready’ for the first regatta which occurs 3 weeks later. We welcomed two new coaches to the team, namely Connor Damin and Callan Alderman, both Old Greys. Although we experienced some heavy rain, wet mattresses and pillows were not enough to dampen the spirit of the group. The 5-day camp was a great success.

Our first competition of the year was the NMU Indoor Regatta at the NMU Sports Centre. Term 1 Newsletter 2020 P a g e | 19 of 28

Although this regatta is not as competitive as the other rowing events on the school’s calendar, it provides the boys with an opportunity to perform on the ergo against one another. The close support from parents and live streaming of the race on a projector added to the excitement of the event.

The U14 division, who raced over 1km, was won by Oliver Eckley in a time of 3:46, followed by Angus Mourant with 3:49.

The U15 rowers also race 1km. Duncan de Klerk was the winner, completing the distance in a time of 3:23, beating Finlay Stephenson narrowly by 2 seconds.

The senior divisions all race 2km. Julian Schmidt won the U16 division in 6:58, followed by Liam Douglass.

The winner of the U19 division was Callum Smyth with an impressive 6:38. Elmo van Olm finished 2nd with a time of 6:43.

The Grey U14 Regatta, which occurred on the Swartkops River at Redhouse the following weekend, was the first opportunity for the young boys to compete against other clubs on the water.

It was evident from the results of this regatta that we had a strong group of juniors this year. We won 5 Gold, 4 Silver and 2 Bronze in the 13 events in which we competed. These eleven positions on podium ensured that Grey took the overall points for the regatta, with St Andrew’s College finishing in 2nd place. Clarendon Girls’ beat Selborne College to claim 3rd place.

On 6 February, parents and boys attended the much- awaited opening of

“The Pumphouse” – the newly built ergo room as part of the Aquatic Centre. This is an exciting addition as it gives the rowers a ‘home’ on campus.

Term 1 Newsletter 2020 P a g e | 20 of 28

The Pumphouse was officially opened by SGB Chairman, Garth Morris, and Rector Erasmus. Our sincere appreciation to both of them, along with many others, for allowing what was once a dream to become a reality. It was a huge undertaking and is a major asset to Grey Rowing.

The Eastern Cape Rowing Championships (ECRA), which was held on the Buffalo River in East London remains the premiere of Eastern Cape rowing where all schools, clubs and universities compete for the title of best rowing club in the province. Grey performed exceptionally well. The regatta concluded with Grey winning earning eleven 1st places, eight 2nd places and eight 3rd places.

Medals were won by the following crews: U14A Quad; U14B Quad; U14A Double; U15A Octuple; U15A Quad; U15B Quad; U15A Double; U15B Double; U15A Scull; U16A Double; U19A Double. Thomas Hobson (U15) won Gold in all four of the events in which he competed.

The Monday that followed was an exciting one as our new John Waugh Double/Pair arrived. This was our second boat purchase of the season, as a John Waugh Scull, named “Phantom”, was added to the fleet in October last year.

Three days later the Grey rowers were back in East London for the 133rd annual Buffalo and Selborne Sprints Regatta, held over the course of three days. Over 1000 participants raced in 200 events. Being a national regatta, every school and university is invited to take part, although U14s are excluded.

The competition was tough; however, the Grey rowers performed well despite a number of boys falling ill.

The U15A Octuple placed 5th and the U15A Double placed 4th. The U16A Quad placed 3rd and the U16A Double placed 6th. In the U19 division, the Scull placed 5th, the Double 5th, the Quad 6th, the Four 6th, and the Eight finished in 4th place.

The second day is raced over a shorter course of 500m, which makes for exciting racing with extremely close finishes.

U15: 4th in the Scull; 4th in the Double; 6th in the Octuple. U16: Both Doubles finished 5th and 6th; Quad finished 3rd. U19: Double came 4th; Quad finished 3rd; Eight finished in 6th place.

Our final regatta of the season was the South African Schools Rowing Championships held on the national racecourse at Roodeplaat Dam, Pretoria. It is at this regatta where all rowing clubs and schools compete for the title of ‘best rowing school in the country’. Out of 28 boys clubs that took part, Grey finished in 11th place.

The Grey rowers performed exceptionally well, bringing back the best result Grey Rowing has achieved to date. A total of 9 finals were made. The overall rankings of crews in the country are as follows: U14 Quad (3rd); U14 Double (5th); U15 Double (2nd); U15 Quad (6th); U16 Quad (7th); U19 Eight (7th); U19 Quad (7th); U19 Four (7th).

Congratulations to the following rowers who returned home with medals: Oliver Eckley, Cameron Barton, Rhys Burrell, Angus Mourant, Munro Douglass, Thomas Hobson, Duncan de Klerk.

Term 1 Newsletter 2020 P a g e | 21 of 28

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the committee under the leadership of Mr Ross Johnston, the Head Coach Mr Reinhardt Oborn, Mrs Marzane Meyer, Mr Steve van Niekerk, the coaches, the parents and the boys for their dedication, tenacity and support. Rowing is, both in and out of the boat, a team effort. Well done to Captain Dale Hurr and Vice- Captain Adam Grosse for their leadership and commitment. The season finished on a high note, and I have no doubt that many victories will be experienced next season.

Squash

The Grey 1st and 2nd Teams participated in two Festivals this term, The FNB St Andrew’s Festival and the Dave Hodgson Festival hosted by St Andrew’s, Grahamstown. This is the first time that Grey have had a 2nd team at these festivals.

A strong 1st Team played some quality squash been unbeaten at the Bloemfontein Festival and losing only to the top-ranked school team in the country, Selborne College, in Grahamstwon.

Notable wins in Bloemfontein were against KES, Maritzburg College, Pretoria Boys, St Andrew’s School and Michaelhouse. The KES win was particularly pleasing, avenging the past three defeats. Standout performers at the Festival were Ryan van Eyk, Aidan Finlay and Cameron Clark who all brought home clean sweeps.

In Grahamstown, the 1st Team had three comfortable wins against Eastern Cape Schools, but lost to Selborne 1 - 5; Aiden Finlay winning at no. 4, three of the matches went to five sets. The Grey vs Selborne encounter at Top Schools this year, should be interesting. The 2nd Team did extremely well to win 50% of their matches at the two festivals against 1st Team opposition.

Aiden Finlay, Ryan van Eyk and Dean Venter were presented with special shirts to commemorate their 50 matches for the Grey 1st Team.
