he Sunday morning skies were bright and blue – and oddly smoke free – as local volunteer firefighters prepared Tvehicles and loaded up for the trip to Prince Albert. “Be careful. Take care of each other. You’re big men for doing this,” Pilot Butte Fire Chief Kevin Dell said to the crew of five Pilot Butte firefighters that morning. Jeff Fink, Chuck Fink, Dustin Fox, John Rajczakowski, J.D. Salt along with Reagan Coppicus and Dave Campbell from Balgonie left Sunday, July 12 for a four-day stint in northern Saskatchewan to help protect com- munities. Saskatchewan’s wildfire blaze involves 120 fires burning nearly100,000 hectares of forest, threatening several communities. The need to keep those communities safe is the reason behind the volunteer’s trip North. “She knows dad is going and coming back safe,” Jeff Rink said of what his daugh- ter Brooklyn, 8, understood of where her dad was going and what he was doing. John Rajczakowski’s wife Kerri recently broke her leg. He left her with daughter Brynn, 3, and son Tanner, 7, who had just had his birthday the day before. “She’s fine with me going,” Rajczakowski said, “just bad timing.
