The headland lay in flow'r to us was coming the summer's warmth to where we lay afloat. This little song, in notes like faint wings beating told of the butterfly o'er Haga fleeting. We drifted on the water, clear and flowing; the oars were sewing silver eye-lets ere they dove in wavelets cool. And dreams of eighteenth century were blowing across my thoughts like ripples on a pool till I forgave its vain and foolish measure for Haga's sake and Haga's Rose of Pleasure. I watched the bubbles dance as they came flying, and on them lying as on cusions, tiny water-gods were seen. But Frida sat and smiled, her needle plying just looking bright and rosy and serene. She didn't see the shapes about us washing like naiads in the lake of Haga plashing. I saw joyful time, through thought's blue hazing. The Poet's phrasing of the "speech of friendly lutes" I could command.

These lyrics present an interesting paradox – a man who longed for his music to be accepted by the American public, yet remained indifferent to the social mores of the time. Porter offered trenchant social commentary aimed at a society restricted by social taboos and cultural conventions. The argument develops systematically through a chronological and contextual study of the influences of people and events on a man and his music. The prosodic intonation and imagistic texture of the lyrics demonstrate an intimate correlation between personality and composition which, in turn, is supported by the biographical content. Created with Vellum INTRODUCTION I wrote this quite a while ago (there’s a bit of lag time between the writing and the publishing). At the time, it was very difficult because I felt that I couldn’t accept the invitation to submit if I couldn’t write a story that had the same tone or feel as a Mercedes Lackey Valdemar story—which is what it is. It’s a story with my characters set in the Valdemar universe. The Valdemar universe is very large, and it covers a number of books in different time periods - but there were fewer books when I wrote this one. I noticed, when proofing, that I had used “Torvan” as a guard name - and no, I didn’t do that deliberately; at the time, Hunter’s Death was new, and, well. Some of us are terrible at names. Also, David Fruitman is a real person who does not live in Valdemar. I was not asked to do this, and didn’t offer it as a charity auction or reward—it just amused me to do it. Chrysalis shredding—not just clothes—but those thoughts. True selves emerge. Polyester veneer of politeness is now scraped clean. Goldfrapp The culprit: a single nail, obsidian sharp. Goldfrapp’s satin clad, ebony-gloved fingers. Needle digs into vinyl. You dig into my skin. “Wonderful Electriccccccc.” The lyric “Strict Machine” sashays over the bridge. We saunter past discarded inhibitions. The chorus awaits, an Black Cherry eruption with a single revelation: 04/2003 I’m in love! Mute I’m in love! I’m in love! “Felt Mountain,” their debut, was the bait. But just like us, hints flirted beneath the cabaret instrument gloss. Even masquerades can only hide appearances for so long. A truth awaited. Not to be whispered, but rather gasped aloud. “Strict Machine” dictates: Dressed in white noise. Little else. This is the inverse of a sophomore slump. Former trip-hop ambience is usurped by electroclash riptide. Siren synths draw us closer. Entrapping me to you. Lyrics our parents warned us about. Trent Reznor wishes he could be this lethal. Dance. It does not ask. It demands. Sitting is heresy. Head thrashing, body sweating. This is not some damn waltz. Hands do not clasp in graceful arcs. Rather, bodies meet perpendicular. Entwine inversely. Arms twist. Disorientation until we can’t tell each other apart. You tell me you can tie cherry stems with your tongue. I tell you I can whisper “Black Cherry” nothings into your ear.

    Palazzo Querini Stampalia Museum Portego entrance Giovanni Mythology Bellini room room The earliest documents concerning the construction of the palace are from 1513-14 and point to Nicolò Querini as commissioner of the works. Grandson Francesco continued the works of enlargement and restoration in various stages throughout the first half of the century. From this period archival documents note nothing of importance until the acquisitions of the following century: in 1614 the building which is now the east wing of the palace and in 1653 part of the house between the canal and the church in Campo Santa Maria Formosa. The last radical transformation of Ca’ Querini was between 1789 and 1797 for the occasion of the marriage in 1790 between Alvise, son of Zuanne, and Maria Teresa Lippomano. In addition to the elevation of the third floor, completed after 1795, there was a large scale restructuring of the interiors with the reduction of the length of the portego and the evolution of the decorative scheme on which worked Jacopo Guarana, Davide Rossi, ornamentalist Giuseppe Bernardino Bison, gilder Domenico Sartori and brothers and stucco workers Giuseppe and Pietro Castelli. The museum is presented in such a way as to recall a patrician residence of the eighteenth century with the display of all of the collections of the family: furnishings, porcelain, sculpture, fabrics, chandeliers, globes, as well as paintings, in order to bring to life the spaces once truly inhabited by the Querini. A rich theatre where every detail plays an important role, from the fabrics in some rooms woven according to original patterns, to the curtains and the pelmets which adorn the windows to the original chandeliers.
