Easily the worst Pendergast novelBy ScottI'm one of those tried and true Preston-Child fans. I've been reading their co-authored books since Relic was published in the mid-90's. I absolutely love the Pendergast series and I think Agent Pendergast is one of the absolute best detective characters who has ever been created in popular fiction.Be that as it may, this was not a good book. I don't know what happened to the boys on this one, but they struck out big time. "Jumped the shark" is the only phrase I can think of to describe this book. Pendergast discovers he had a son he didn't know about, and...wait for it!....the boy has an EVIL TWIN. In fact, they grew up in a secret Nazi enclave in South America where the Nazis were carrying out nefarious eugenics experiments on twins, creating a population of slave labor (the "regular" twins) and a population of super smart evil geniuses (the "enhanced" twins). The whole thing was just ridiculous and banal, totally unoriginal and over-the-top in the extreme. My sincere hope is that this is just a blip on the radar and they will get back to normal in their next Pendergast novel.8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Extremely Disappointing BookBy MemeThe authors this time have failed to give a book up to the Pendergast standards. They wrecked the agent's usual stalwart personality and made him a wimp from the beginning. The ridiculous, outrageously bazaar activities they give during P's pursuit of his poor son are so over the top that they lend nothing to the story. The incipient malefactors that Pendergast usually runs into are missing. Instead the authors have decided to create such an absurd backstory along with preposterous machinations to go along with it that the entire story of P's wife's demise goes sour. They crushed Pendergast's usual demeanor and made him a miserable wretch. The only saving grace were the other characters' stories - which could have well been other books expanded to include Pendergast. I am sorry I paid good money to buy this one. Disappointment doesn't begin to explain my feelings. After waiting for almost a year and a half for this last of the last trilogy, it could have been much longer - like 900+ pages. This latest Pendergast offering was a very BIG disappointment.9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. ***SPOILER ALERT***By David S. FergusonSo someone help me get this straight--I'm playing catch-up here. So, Pendergast has a wife but she was killed in Africa by a lion. But she's alive again because, oh wait, it was actually her twin, a sister that we didn't know about, who was killed by a lion trained by Nazi's to only drag her body away--not to eat it. But before she is "killed" the first time she gives birth to a son, then later we find out it wasn't one son but twins! One good son and one bad one. Then, she dies once more--yes, by Nazis again. Meanwhile, Pendergast's ward, a 19 year old beauty--no hold on--she's a actually a 180 year old beauty who killed her own child (fathered by Pendergast's evil brother, Diogenes) by throwing it overboard off the QE2, has just been released from a mental hospital. No, I almost forgot. Her child isn't really dead but is being taken care of by Tibetan monks who believe he is the next incarnation of the Dalai Lama! Then, Pendergast is forced to kill his demented ubber-kid son who is a serial killer in NYC. No, actually the bad son is not really dead yet, just horribly disfigured and mad as hell. But Pendergast does keep his good son to be educated by his 180 year-old ward, Constance, who is just now starting to age. So, in future books (ugh), could we see good brother, bad brother, grow up to be another Aloysius and Diogenes? Corrie becomes the new D'Agosta and Constance becomes the girlfriend of good son but is killed by bad son, but wait, she's really still alive and . .Oh how I miss the stand- alones like Riptide, Ice Limit and A Still Life with Crows! After his wife, Helen, is brazenly abducted before his eyes, Special Agent Pendergast furiously pursues the kidnappers, chasing them across the country and into Mexico. But then, things go terribly, tragically wrong; the kidnappers escape; and a shattered Pendergast retreats to his New York apartment and shuts out the world. But when a string of bizarre murders erupts across several Manhattan hotels-perpetrated by a boy who seems to have an almost psychic ability to elude capture-NYPD Lieutenant D'Agosta asks his friend Pendergast for help. Reluctant at first, Pendergast soon discovers that the killings are a message from his wife's kidnappers. But why a message? And what does it mean? When the kidnappers strike again at those closest to Pendergast, the FBI agent, filled anew with vengeful fury, sets out to track down and destroy those responsible. His journey takes him deep into the trackless forests of South America, where he ultimately finds himself face to face with an old evil that-rather than having been eradicated- is stirring anew... and with potentially world-altering consequences.Confucius once said: "Before you embark on a journey of revenge, first dig two graves." Pendergast is about to learn the hard way just how true those words still ring. "Pendergast--an always-black-clad pale blond polymath, gaunt yet physically deadly, an FBI agent operating without supervision or reprimand-lurks at the dark, sharp edge of crime fiction protagonists."?Kirkus s"TWO GRAVES provides readers exactly what they would expect from a Preston and Child novel --- thrills, high adventure, treacherous plot twists and well-researched scientific intrigue. The story is never predictable, and Pendergast is a multi- layered personality who keeps you guessing throughout."?Bookreporter.com"The names Preston Child on the cover of a book promise a unique reading experience unlike any other, and Two Graves delivers the high thrills one expects from the two masters...authors Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child have delivered another exceptional book....Fans will love the conclusion to the trilogy, and newcomers will seek out the authors' earlier titles."?The Washington Post"Preston and Child's high-adrenaline 12th thriller featuring maverick FBI agent Aloysius Pendergast wraps up the trilogy that began with 2010's Fever Dream and continued with 2011's Cold Vengeance with a bang...[an] intelligent suspense novel."?Publishers WeeklyAbout the AuthorThe thrillers of Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child "stand head and shoulders above their rivals" (Publishers Weekly).
