  • Early Medieval Oxfordshire
Anglo-Saxon Oxfordshire Sally Crawford and Anne Dodd, December 2007 1. Introduction: nature of the evidence, history of research and the role of material culture Anglo-Saxon Oxfordshire has been extremely well served by archaeological research, not least because of coincidence of Oxfordshire’s diverse underlying geology and the presence of the University of Oxford. Successive generations of geologists at Oxford studied and analysed the landscape of Oxfordshire, and in so doing, laid the foundations for the new discipline of archaeology. As early as 1677, geologist Robert Plot had published his The Natural History of Oxfordshire ; William Smith (1769- 1839), who was born in Churchill, Oxfordshire, determined the law of superposition of strata, and in so doing formulated the principles of stratigraphy used by archaeologists and geologists alike; and William Buckland (1784-1856) conducted experimental archaeology on mammoth bones, and recognised the first human prehistoric skeleton. Antiquarian interest in Oxfordshire lead to a number of significant discoveries: John Akerman and Stephen Stone's researches in the gravels at Standlake recorded Anglo-Saxon graves, and Stone also recognised and plotted cropmarks in his local area from the back of his horse (Akerman and Stone 1858; Stone 1859; Brown 1973). Although Oxford did not have an undergraduate degree in Archaeology until the 1990s, the Oxford University Archaeological Society, originally the Oxford University Brass Rubbing Society, was founded in the 1890s, and was responsible for a large number of small but significant excavations in and around Oxfordshire as well as providing a training ground for many British archaeologists. Pioneering work in aerial photography was carried out on the Oxfordshire gravels by Major Allen in the 1930s, and Edwin Thurlow Leeds, based at the Ashmolean Museum, carried out excavations at Sutton Courtenay, identifying Anglo-Saxon settlement in the 1920s, and at Abingdon, identifying a major early Anglo-Saxon cemetery (Leeds 1923, 1927, 1947; Leeds 1936).

saturday 8 - monday 31 may 2010 free guide www.artweeks.org Sponsored by Welcome to Artweeks 2010 2010 is set to be the biggest Artweeks ever with 474 sites exhibiting during the Festival. Artweeks plays a vital role in bringing artists and art enthusiasts and buyers together across the county. Our goal this year is to bring new audiences to the work of Oxfordshire's creative community, those who might find the idea of going to a gallery daunting. By visiting an open studio and talking to the artist you get to understand the creative process, the way they have tried to convey their ideas and the effect they have created. Most of the works on view are for sale and you'll find some originals at prices that you might pay for a mass-produced copy in a quality department store. Artweeks is all about involvement and originality; by simply going along to a couple of studios and seeing what is on offer, you too add to the vibrancy of Oxfordshire's biggest arts festival. VCH Oxfordshire • Texts in Progress • Gt Rollright (August 2021) • Settlement etc. • p. 1 VCH Oxfordshire Texts in Progress GREAT ROLLRIGHT Landscape, Settlement, and Buildings The Green, Great Rollright, site of the former village cross. Great Rollright is a secluded rural parish adjoining the Warwickshire border, c.2¾ miles north of Chipping Norton and the same south-west of Hook Norton.1 The village, comprising several distinct ‘ends’ now partly linked by modern infill, developed on a south-facing slope close to an ancient ridgeway from Stow-on-the Wold (Glos.) to Banbury. Little outlying settlement existed until enclosure in 1776, which prompted the building of a few isolated farmhouses, while more recent development increased the overall number of dwellings from 80-odd in the 1930s to over 200 in 2011. The economy was predominantly agricultural until the 20th century, benefiting briefly from the Cheltenham to Banbury railway (1887–1962), and in the 19th century the presence of a large body of poorly paid farm workers probably contributed to increased Nonconformity. Significant landowners included Brasenose College, Oxford (also church patron), and the resident Sheppards (1583–1742). The prefix ‘Great’, 1 This account was written in 2019–20 and revised in 2021. VCH Oxfordshire • Texts in Progress • Gt Rollright (August 2021) • Settlement etc. • p. 2 established by 1086, distinguishes the parish from its smaller neighbour Little Rollright, site of the prehistoric Rollright Stones.2 The two became a single parish in 1932.3 LANDSCAPE, SETTLEMENT, AND BUILDINGS Parish Boundaries Great Rollright parish before its unification with Little Rollright in 1932. • Choose Chipping Norton
Choose Chipping Norton Chipping Norton is a bustling Cotswold market town and ‘Gateway to the Cotswolds’; it’s a fantastic place to visit and a market is held there every Wednesday and a Farmers’ Market on the third Saturday of each month. The town has some great shopping and a good choice of places to eat and drink. There is a town guide and a town trail available to download that take in some of the highlights in and around Chipping Norton, as well as a number of walks into the surrounding countryside. Within the town itself don’t miss the Grade I listed Church of St Mary the Virgin and the Owen Mumford Gallery within the Theatre Chipping Norton. The gallery, which has free admission, is open on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 11am-3pm. From Wednesday 26 March to Wednesday 16 April, the gallery is showing drawings and sketchings by the theatre’s artist-in-residence, Chris Forthergill. The Rollright Stones near Chipping Norton Just 2.5 miles from Chipping Norton lie the mysterious Rollright Stones: a prehistoric standing stone circle. Legend tells us that a king and his army were marching over the Cotswolds when they met a witch, who addressed the king... "Seven long strides thou shalt take, and If Long Compton thou canst see King of England shalt thou be" The king strode forward confidently but on his seventh stride the ground rose obscuring his view of the village below. The witch then turned the men to stone, the king overlooking Long Compton, his men standing in a circle nearby, and his five knights whispering treachery a little further off.

Introduction 1.1 The aim of this paper is to investigate the relative sustainability of the District’s settlements. This assessment is an input to the preparation of the Core Strategy. 2. Methodology 2.1 The most up to date information collected on facilities and services in the District is collected in the West Oxfordshire Parish Survey. This was completed by Parish Clerks in July/August 2010 for their respective parishes. For the purpose of this analysis parish data is used. Occasionally, where services and facilities within settlements are referred to, such as pubs and petrol filling stations, they may be located outside of the main settlement elsewhere in the parish. With the exception of Hanborough, which includes the villages of Long Hanborough and Church Hanborough and the parish of Aston which includes the villages and hamlets of Aston, Cote, Shifford and Chimney, the parishes considered in the analysis generally contain only one main settlement which provides a focus for services and facilities. 2.2 There are a large number of towns, villages and hamlets within the District, some of which are very small and do not have any services or facilities. It was not feasible to include each one in this analysis. This analysis is based on the 42 towns and villages identified within the settlement hierarchy in the adopted Local Plan. 2.3 The facilities and services were broken down into two main components; services and facilities within the settlement and accessibility to higher order centres.
