Jørgen Carling is Senior Researcher at the International Peace Research Institute, Oslo (PRIO), where he does research on migration and transnationalism. Transnational Archipelago Transnational Migration has been essential to Cape Verde since the birth of the na- tion, and connections to faraway places continue to dominate daily life on the islands. This book makes a signifi cant contribution to the study of international migration and transnationalism by exploring the Cape Verdean diaspora through its geographical diversity and with a range of thematic perspectives. The fi rst part of the book is a journey to eight Cape Verdean emigrant communities, from Argentina in the South to Sweden in the North. These chapters testify to the strikingly diverse outcomes of migration from a single, small country. The second part of the book explores selected themes in Cape Verdean migration and transnationalism, including music, language, the Internet and gender relations. This comprehensive account of Cape Verdean migration traces intriguing routes of travel, explores little known destinations in four different continents and uncovers a variety of expressions of belonging and longing. By looking beyond the main migratory routes to major destinations, investigated in most migration research, it opens up for important new horizons of research and insight. It is also one of very few an- thologies that presents a range of geographical and thematic perspec- tives on any single diaspora. The book emerged out of a conference or- ganised at the Centro de Estudos de Antropologia Social (CEAS), at the Instituto Superior de Cieˆncias do Trabalho e da Empresa (ISCTE), in Lisbon, April 2005. The conference comprised forty presentations by researchers from a dozen different countries. The chapters in this book include substantially revised versions of selected conference papers, chapters that merged individual conference papers, as well as newly written chapters. The conference itself was trilingual (Portuguese, Spanish and English) and several chapters have been translated into English. While there is a growing literature on Cape Verdean migration in Portuguese, our ambition with this book was to make high-quality research on Cape Verdean migration accessible to an international Eng- lish-speaking audience. Most of the research presented in this book would not have been possible without the contributions of Cape Verdean informants in- volved in the diaspora and on the islands. We are all grateful for the willingness of so many Cape Verdeans to generously share their experi- ences for the benefit of our research. There are, unfortunately, no aca- demics from Cape Verde among the contributors to this volume. How- ever, it is promising to see that higher education and research is devel- oping rapidly in Cape Verde, and that increasing numbers of Cape Verdean students overseas are doing graduate research linked to migra- tion. The conference in Lisbon was supported by the Fundac¸a˜o para a Cieˆncia e a Tecnologia (FCT), and the Fundac¸a˜o Luso-Americana (FLAD). Her PhD in Social Anthropol- ogy addressed the meanings of migration in Cape Verde and was based on extensive fieldwork in Sa˜o Vicente during the period 1996–2003. She is currently doing research on remittances to Cape Verde with a fo- cus on rural Santo Anta˜o. She has also done fieldwork among Cape Verdeans in Sweden. Her research, teaching and supervision also cov- ers family and kinship, ethnic and cultural diversity, and human traf- ficking. JACQUELINE ANDALL is Senior Lecturer in Italian Studies at the Depart- ment of European Studies, University of Bath. Her research interests are on labour migration, female migration, second generations and Ita- lian colonialism/postcolonialism. She is author of Gender, Migration and Domestic Service (Ashgate, 2000), editor of Gender and Ethnicity in Contemporary Europe (Berg 2003) and co-editor (with Derek Duncan) of Italian Colonialism: Legacy and Memory (Peter Lang, 2005). Her current research is on Ghanaian migration to Italy’s industrial districts. LUI´S BATALHA is a social anthropologist and Associate Professor at the In- stituto Superior de Cieˆncias Sociais e Polı´ticas, Universidade Te´cnica de Lisboa. He has done ethnographic work among Cape Verdeans in Portugal, the U.S. and Cape Verde exploring issues relating to ethni- city, race and identity construction. He has published a book about the presence of Cape Verdeans in Portugal, The Cape Verdean Diaspora in Portugal: Colonial Subjects in a Postcolonial World (Lexington Books, 2004) as well as several articles and book chapters on related issues. He is currently working on the presence of the Cape Verdeans in Mo- zambique’s late colonial period as middle-men civil servants. HUUB BEIJERS is manager of transcultural psychiatry for Symfora group Mental Health Care in the Netherlands. He has a background in medi- cal anthropology and social psychology. He was responsible for the de- velopment of the Apoio project, a community mental health care initia- tive for Cape Verdeans in Rotterdam. His research in the Cape Verdean community in Rotterdam focused on experiences of psychosocial dis- 8 TRANSNATIONAL ARCHIPELAGO tress, explanations of distress, pathways to health, and experiences of exclusion and discrimination in mental health care. He is currently de- veloping research on experiences of Cape Verdean girls sexually abused by relatives. JØRGEN CARLING is Senior Researcher at the International Peace Research Institute, Oslo (PRIO) in Norway. He holds a PhD in human geogra- phy based on a case study of Dutch-Cape Verdean transnationalism.

    Do Migrants Improve Governance at Home? Evidence from a Voting Experiment * Catia Batista and Pedro C. Vicente Forthcoming at World Bank Economic Review Abstract Can international migration promote better institutions at home by raising the demand for political accountability? In order to examine this question, we designed a behavioral measure of the population’s desire for better governance. A postcard was distributed to households with the pledge that, if enough postcards were mailed back, results from a survey module on perceived corruption would be made public in the national media. Using data from a tailored household survey, we examine the determinants of our behavioral measure of demand for political accountability (i.e. of undertaking the costly action of mailing the postcard), and isolate the positive effect of international emigration using locality level variation. The estimated effects are robust to the use of instrumental variables, including both past migration and macro shocks in the migrant destination countries. We find that the estimated effects can be mainly attributed to those who emigrated to countries with better governance, especially return migrants. JEL Codes: F22, O12, O15, O43, P16. This study provides evidence of the occurrence of this species at the Revillagigedo Archipelago (18899′186′′N 112808′44′′W), Mexico, using acoustic telemetry and videos taken from 2014 to 2016. We report here movements from a coastal location (National Park Cabo Pulmo) to a group of oceanic islands (Revillagigedo Archipelago) by one single individual, supporting the idea of the potential connectivity of sharks between the Gulf of California and the Revillagigedo Archipelago. This report extends the known distribution of N. velox to 400 km off the mainland coast of the Americas, thereby increasing the knowledge of the distribution of a species commonly reported in fishery landings of the Eastern Pacific.

Language contact and variation in Cape Verde and São Tomé and Príncipe Nélia Alexandre1 & Rita Gonçalves (University of Lisbon, Center of Linguistics) Abstract Both Cape Verdean Portuguese (CVP) and Santomean Portuguese (STP) are in contact with Portuguese-related Creole languages formed during the 15th and 16th centuries: Capeverdean, in Cape Verde, and Santome, Angolar and Lung’Ie, in São Tomé and Príncipe. Despite this, Portuguese is the only offi- cial language of the two archipelagos. The goal of this chapter is twofold. First, we aim to compare and dis- cuss corpora data from CVP and STP underlining the impact of socio- historical factors in some morphosyntactic aspects of these Portuguese varie- ties’ grammars. Second, we will show that the convergence and divergence observed is not only driven by the language contact situation but also by inter- nal change mechanisms. 1. Introduction Cape Verde and São Tomé and Príncipe are two islands states near the west coast of Africa. Both are former Portuguese colonies which have Portuguese- related Creole languages formed during the 15th and 16th centuries: Capeverd- ean, in the former, and three Gulf of Guinea creoles, with a major role of San- tome, in the latter. Ferreira Cape Verdean Theatre: Enacting Political Theory and Reclaiming Roots for Crioulo Performance by Eunice S. Ferreira Abstract Shining a spotlight on the Cape Verde Islands illuminates the rich diversity of theatre of the African diaspora and places its unique crioulo identity and creole identities in general, center stage. This article focuses on the post-independence theatre movement in Cape Verde where the re-Africanization theories of Amílcar Cabral (assassinated PAIGC leader in Cape Verde’s liberation struggle) shaped national identity and guided the pioneering work of theatre troupe Korda Kaoberdi (Wake up, Cape Verde). Under the dynamic leadership of Francisco Gomes Fragoso, a medical doctor who adopted the artistic name of Kwame Kondé, the troupe Korda Kaoberdi sought to create “a genuinely Cape Verdean and authentically African theatre.” Armed with the tenets of Cabral’s political theory, Fragoso reclaimed performance traditions that had been suppressed during Portuguese colonialism in order to train actors as combatants in cultural warfare. In doing so, Fragoso positioned the fledgling theatre artists of Korda Kaoberdi alongside the freedom fighters, asserting as Cabral did that culture is a weapon and sign of liberation. The author offers first-ever reconstructions of their historical productions based on archival research, Fragoso’s own writings, festival participant-observations, and personal interviews.

Bunting-Hudson How do rap artists in Bogota, Colombia come together to make music? What is the process they take to commodify their culture? Why are some rappers able to become socially mobile in this process, while others are less so? What is technology’s role in all of this? This ethnography explores those questions, as it carefully documents the strategies utilized by various rap groups in Bogota, Colombia to create social mobility, commoditize products and to create a different vision of modernity within the hip-hop community, as an alternative to the ideals set forth by mainstream Colombian society. Resistance Art Poetry (RAP), is said to have originated in the United States but has become a form of international music. In conducting ethnographic research from December of 2012 to October 2014, I was able to discover how rappers organize themselves politically, how they commoditize their products and distribute them to create various types of social mobilities. In this dissertation, I constructed models to typologize rap groups in Bogota, Colombia, which I call polities of rappers to discuss how these groups come together, take shape, make plans and execute them to reach their business goals.
