  • Original Calendar Girls Celebrate Yorkshire with West End Stars at RHS Chelsea
Wednesday 24 May 2017 Original Calendar Girls celebrate Yorkshire with West End stars at RHS Chelsea Stars of the hit West End show “The Girls” have joined the original Yorkshire Calendar Girls by the seaside in the Welcome to Yorkshire show garden at RHS Chelsea. Thousands of visitors have been admiring the beautiful Welcome to Yorkshire garden this week with its chalk cliffs, ruined abbey and beach scene. The garden, awarded a silver medal by RHS Chelsea judges, was designed by Leeds-based Tracy Foster and made with 30 tonnes of Yorkshire stone, sand and pebbles. And today original Calendar Girls Tricia Stewart (Miss October) and Ros Fawcett (Miss November) took centre stage in the garden alongside the stage stars of The Girls West End musical, Claire Machin, Debbie Chazen and Sophie-Louise Dann. Tricia said: “I just think the Welcome to Yorkshire garden looks wonderful. I love this beach and sea and the white rocks are fantastic, and the abbey! I think it’s inspired and I love it. It’s definitely the best one here. “This garden gives everyone a taste of Yorkshire. Some people have no idea about how wonderful Yorkshire is, and this garden just shows it off.” Ros said: “It’s just as though we’re on the east coast of Yorkshire and it’s wonderful. “I would say to everyone: come and visit Yorkshire first and then come down to the Calendar Girls show in London and then they can appreciate it all.” Sir Gary Verity, Chief Executive of Welcome to Yorkshire: “Yorkshire‘s wowing London right now, both in the West End with The Girls musical and here at Chelsea with our spectacular garden.

  • Unforgettable New Theatre at the SJT
Join me to help create unforgettable new theatre at the SJT I’ve benefi ted from the SJT’s willingness to take a chance on a new writer – my play Neville’s Island was born in Scarborough and is still in production around the world over 25 years later. Tim Firth Writer of Calendar Girls on stage and screen and of The Girls musical with Gary Barlow Donate to the Script Development Fund today and you’ll be investing in a brand new play by supporting either a line, a page or a whole scene. Invest in the next generation of Scarborough plays You have to be brave to commission a new writer with no track record at the box of ce in these dif cult times. That ethos of bravery dates back to Stephen Joseph giving Alan Ayckbourn the chance to write his rst play. Believe me, it’s rare to nd a network like the SJT’s that can support a writer. But it’s the most exciting that theatre can be. For the playwrights. The actors. And you the audience. The chance for “outsiders” to be part of that genesis, indeed to parent it, is a rare and fabulous one. It costs about £8,000 to commission a new script, and a bit more to develop and nurture its journey to the stage. The theatre’s ambition is to develop more new plays to full production and to uncover more talented writers. The expertise and insight is in place – we just need investment to make this possible.

  • CALENDAR GIRLS AUDITION PIECES Chris
CALENDAR GIRLS AUDITION PIECES CHARACTER: Chris – (f) - around 50 DESCRIPTION: You want Chris at your party. She will talk to people she doesn’t know, find things to say to fill silences and generate laughter. Without Chris in her life, Annie would be better behaved, her life less fun. The two of them are like naughty schoolgirls. Ideal car – who cares, as long as it’s a cabriolet. Ideal holiday – Algarve. AUDITION PIECE: Chris: HOLD ON. HOLD ON A MINUTE WITH YOUR BLOODY BUZZER. ( She takes the stand ) Sorry but the OTHER delegate for Knapeley’s got something to say and she’s about to commit heresy. ( Loudly ) I HATE plum jam. I only joined the WI because it made my mother- in-law happy. End of story. ( Counting on her fingers ) I’m crap at cake, I hate knitting – and in fact seeing it’s unlikely George Clooney would ever come to Knapeley to give a talk on his collection of slightly-too-small swimming trunks, there seems very little reason for me to STAY in the WI. Except – SUDDENLY I want to raise money in memory of a man we all loved. And to do that I’m prepared to take my clothes off on a calendar. ( Beat ) And if you guys don’t agree then I’m going to do it without council approval because FRANKLY, guys, some things are bigger than council approval. And FRANKLY if it meant we’d get – (she gestures a “tiny amount”) – THAT-T much closer to killing off this shitty, cheating, sly, conniving, silent bloody disease that cancer is then God, I tell y’, I would run round Skipton market smeared in plum jam with a knitted tea cosy on my head singing Jerusalem .

  • NEWS RELEASE Gary Barlow and Original Calendar Girls Lead
NEWS RELEASE Gary Barlow and original Calendar Girls lead celebrity support for leukaemia patient’s epic charity cycling challenge A man living with blood cancer is to cycle from Amsterdam to Grassington – after being inspired by the WI Calendar Girls and the Gary Barlow & Tim Firth musical about their story. Paul Carless, 50 , was diagnosed with Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia (CML) in 2014. He was soon to meet the Calendar Girls, who encouraged him to get involved with the blood cancer research charity, Bloodwise. Since diagnosis he has undertaken a series of fundraising challenges with his friend Tom Stockwell, 41,. With the full support of Gary Barlow, Tim Firth and the original Calendar Girls, the pair will set off from Amsterdam on the 10th of July and cycle 368 miles over five days to reach the Yorkshire Dales National Park Centre in Grassington arriving at around 3pm on the 14th of July. There will be a short ceremony at the Centre, followed by tea and cake at Church House, Main Street with the Calendar Girls. All welcome! Paul Carless said: “I was involved with the Calendar Girls West End musical selling merchandise and holding collecting buckets after the performances. One of the lyrics from the opening song of the show is about a flower truck that drove ‘from Amsterdam to Yorkshire...’. That inspired this year's challenge. “We try to raise funds for Bloodwise to support its research into finding cures for all blood cancers, to raise awareness of blood cancer and to prove that it’s possible to live life as fully as possible despite having cancer.
