Welcome to the New Season Welcome to another season of cricket at Wooburn Narkovians. After the wettest winter anyone can remember, we are hoping for a hot summer in 2014 and lots of cricket for our junior teams. Better weather in 2013 saw our junior teams play 37 matches and compete in two Kwik cricket tournaments. All our teams performed creditably, and there were plenty of victories, with some excellent individual performances, a few defeats and some very exciting finishes to keep parents and managers on edge. The U11s enjoyed their first experience of hard ball cricket in south Division 4, while the U12s had an excellent season, only losing twice. The U13s could conceivably have won promotion, had we been able to put out a team in the first two matches. The U14s had some extraordinarily close matches, including a memorable tie with , and the U15s performed well, achieving their usual 3rd place in Division 2. We also ran a very successful Kwik Cricket tournament in July, and were finally blessed with some blazing hot weather, as anyone who had to stand out umpiring will testify! Well done to all the Wooburn teams who took part.

Age Group Teams for 2014 In 2014, we will be running teams in the Bucks Leagues at U11, U13, U14, U15 and U17. We urgently require two team managers and helpers for the U11s and U14s. Please help us if you possibly can. We will be running our own Kwik cricket tournament once again, after three successful years, and entering one or two others. We also hope to arrange friendly softball matches for younger members and an introduction to hardball cricket for those U9s and U10s ready to step up. 5 of 40 - Wooburn Narkovians CC – Junior Cricket 2014

Winter Nets A number of net sessions were held over the winter at High School for the U10 to U17 age groups. There were monthly sessions before Christmas, and then weekly sessions in March, finishing on Friday 28th March. As usual, these sessions were extremely well attended and promised much for the season ahead.

County and Development Squad Trials The organisation of age group county cricket changed again this year, with two ‘development’ squads per age group being reduced to one. A number of our boys attended trials for the various squads in November and December, with Ben Cooper and Tom Wright being selected for the U13 and U14 ‘development’ squads respectively. Both attended a number of coaching sessions, held at Chesham and Milton Keynes. Well done to them!

New Practice Net Facilities 2013 saw our new artificial batting end laid, at a cost of nearly £12,000. With the growth of the junior section of the club, it had been clear for some time that our practice facilities needed upgrading, and we are very pleased with the result. The batting end is two wickets wide, catering for up to 16 junior players at a time. The netting is demountable, i.e. can be put away, after each session to fit in with Parish Council wishes. In 2014, we are hoping to add bowling ends, preferably an end that can take spikes, but much depends on what funds we have available.

New Junior Members Welcome Our junior membership has stabilised at around 100 over the last couple of seasons, but new members are always welcome, and we continue to actively seeking new players of all ages and

6 of 40 - Wooburn Narkovians CC – Junior Cricket 2014 all abilities for our junior teams, from U7 (school year 2) through to U17. If any of our current members have friends, or know of anyone interested in cricket or looking for a new club, feel free to recommend us. All new members are very welcome, and can either contact us by email ([email protected]) or come along to one of the coaching sessions.

Thank You to Parents for Your Support Team managers would like to thank all parents for their support throughout the 2013 season. Prompt replies to availability emails are very much appreciated. We hope for the same again in 2014.

Continued Commitment to Youth Development 10 of our current junior members represented the senior teams in 2013, notably Evan Rees, Will Cuthbert, John Henry Kelly and Ali Dalton. The future of our club depends on the strength of our junior section and young players progressing into the senior teams, and we hope those who played senior cricket last season will continue, and one or two more will take that next step in their cricket careers in 2014.

More Volunteer Helpers Needed Please! Over the years, our junior section has expanded considerably, and is now a far cry from the days of one net on the outfield and 20 or so children of mixed ages practising on a Sunday morning. We now cater for almost 100 members and arrange over 40 matches a season, taking in some of the most scenic grounds in south . However, to maintain this we do need more help. Without it, we will become crowd controllers and not coaches, and may have to restrict membership to fit in with recommended ECB coach to player ratios. If you are able to help in some capacity, please talk to one of the coaches to find out more. There are a variety of ways in which you can contribute: -  Coaching or Assisting during coaching sessions – can you commit to helping on Sunday mornings, either working alongside one of our coaches, or maybe you would like to take your own group. If you would like to join our coaching team, the club will pay for any ECB approved training courses you may require.  Admin managers – responsible for collecting availability and notifying players about matches; an extremely important role with no cricket knowledge required. All you need is a phone and an internet connection.  Team Managers – taking responsibility for organising teams and running matches; this is not as big a job as it sounds, with most age groups playing 7 or 8 matches, although there is the option to organise more if the children are keen to play

8 of 40 - Wooburn Narkovians CC – Junior Cricket 2014

 Coach/Team Manager – run and age group team, undertaking coaching and team management duties. The full works but a great chance to develop players and a team. We do expect everyone to help us in the following ways:  Helping on match days – setting out boundary markers, putting away kit, match fee collection, scoring, for the very brave, umpiring or even writing match reports for the club website. Any help on match days will benefit the children by giving the coach more time to prepare the team.  Helping team managers by ensuring your child is available, where possible, for their age group matches, and responding promptly to email requests for availability. Anyone interested in team management or coaching, roles where there is a position of trust with regard to looking after children, will require a basic CRB check. This is really an exercise in admin, but something we have to do to keep our club safe and child friendly. A CRB check requires completion of the CRB form and confirmation of id. It is a simple process, it’s free and it lasts for 3 years. Please do not let this put you off. If you are able to help in any way at all, you will be very welcome.

2014 Subscriptions and Match Fees Subscriptions and match fees remain unchanged from 2013. These are as follows: Single Junior Member £50.00 Two Junior Members (family rate) £90.00 Three Junior Members (family rate) £120.00 Senior and Junior (family rate) £140.00 Senior and Two Juniors (family rate) £180.00 Junior Match Fee £2.50 The Junior Membership Form Before a young player can attend the coaching sessions, it is important that we have a completed membership form, with up- to-date contact details (telephone numbers and email addresses) and any medical information the club coaches need to be aware of. It is absolutely vital that we have this information to hand should we need to get hold of you at short notice. Please complete the Membership Form and either hand it to a club coach or official or post it to Claire Ellis (Bridge Cottage, Town Lane, , Bucks, HP10 0PJ), along with the Annual Subscription. Cheques should be made payable to ‘WNCC’. The membership form refers to the Club Policy booklet, which should be read in conjunction with the form. This is available on the ‘Downloads’ page on the club website, or from the pavilion. There are tick boxes on the form for the more important club policies.

Wooburn Park on a summer Sunday morning

The Sunday Morning Café The Sunday morning Café will be open from 10.00am through the season, serving tea, coffee (from our new, top quality coffee machine), a selection of cold drinks, bar snacks and the most delicious bacon butties. The Café is manned by our lovely cricket ladies, please do offer them a hand when you can.

Registration at Coaching Sessions When attending coaching sessions, junior members must ‘register’ before joining in the session. In order to comply with the ECB Clubmark

requirements, we need to keep formal records of which members are with which coach, week to week. Registration will take place in the pavilion. Registration forms, one per age group, will be laid out on a table in the pavilion. Members simply need to tick the box for correct date next to their name.

What to Bring to Coaching When attending coaching sessions, young players should bring a drink, a hat/cap (in the event of hot weather) and sun cream as required.

What to Wear Players should wear a suitable sports shirt, white trousers, training shorts or tracksuit bottoms, trainers or cricket boots. For those players likely to bat against a hard ball, it is very important that briefs are worn, not boxer shorts. Protective cricket ‘boxes’ required for batting cannot be worn with boxer shorts, and players will not be allowed to bat against a hard ball unless they are wearing a ‘box’. Rubber soled shoes will be needed to bat in the new artificial nets. For matches, a white shirt and white trousers should be worn, with a white cricket jumper if required. It would be nice if club shirts could be worn, but this is not compulsory.

All club playing and training shirts, hoodies and caps, can be ordered via the Café and our Colts Membership Secretary, Claire Ellis. If you need an order form, please email Claire at [email protected]. Kit is supplied by Hawkinsport, who offer a small financial return to the club for each order placed. Alternatively, kit can be ordered online from www.seriouscricket.co.uk, more details towards the end of this handbook.

Cricket Kit / Equipment All other cricket kit, such as pads, bats, gloves, helmets etc will be provided by the club if not already purchased by the player for their own use. It is recommended that players purchase their own box, although the club will have some available for use.

13 of 40 - Wooburn Narkovians CC – Junior Cricket 2014

Name Personal Items Please put your child’s name on any personal items of kit, i.e. jumper, bat, pads, gloves, box, water bottles etc, in order that the owner of any ‘lost property’ can be easily identified. All club kit will

have ‘WNCC’ written on it somewhere in ink!

Wearing of Helmets As stipulated by the ECB, all young players under the age of 18 have to wear a helmet when batting or keeping wicket, without exception. Wet Weather If coaching is cancelled due to wet weather, a news item will be posted on the website, www.wncc.co.uk. If you are unsure, please check there first.

Sainsburys Active Kids Vouchers! This season we are once again collecting Sainsbury Active Kids vouchers, which we can use to acquire various items of kit for use by our junior members. The scheme is only open to clubs with Clubmark status, and runs until 20th May 2014. A Collection box is located in the pavilion, or vouchers can be handed to coaches or committee members. Please consider donating your vouchers to WNCC, and help us provide better equipment for our young cricketers!

Organisation of Age Group Matches

Team Notification Team Managers will notify selected parents by email and/or text message in the first instance. It would be very helpful if parents could respond promptly, as this will save follow up phone calls. If a player has to unexpectedly withdraw from a match, please inform the Team Manager as soon as you can, to give the maximum time for finding a replacement.

Away Matches For away matches, selected players will similarly be notified and clear directions to the venue will be given, along with the time players are expected to arrive. Ideally this would be half an hour before the start, but we appreciate this will not always be possible, especially for 6pm midweek matches. The team manager will have emergency contact details to hand for all players.

Cancellation due to Bad Weather In the event of bad weather, the team manager will notify parents of any cancellation as soon as that information is available. If you do not hear anything, please assume the match is still on.

Kit for Matches When representing the club, players should wear a white shirt, white jumper (if it’s cold!), white trousers and white trainers or cricket boots.

2013 Season Review In 2013, we fielded teams at five different age groups, U11, U12, U13, U14 and U15, as well as and entering two Kwik Cricket tournaments. A short review of each team’s season in 2013 follows:

Kwik Cricket This is an ever growing group with new joiners replacing those older boys who are now moving on to hard ball cricket. Coaching revolves around practising the core skills of bowling, batting and fielding and then using these in a match environment at the end of the coaching session. Some learn quicker than others but the key objectives is that all attendees enjoy the coaching and want to come back for more. The U8/9’s played a couple of matches and ended up on the losing side by 24 runs at Farnham Common and then by 1 run off the last ball of the game on a blazing hot morning at Cookham Dean. These matches, I hope, are real eye openers for the players as it puts into focus the things that we have been working on at coaching. Understanding that they need to bowl straight or call properly when running between the wickets can make the difference when it involves winning or losing. More games for this age group is definitely on the agenda for this season but will require some parental assistance. The U10’s played in 2 kwik cricket tournaments this season the first being the Wooburn competition on July 7th when, after 2 years of drizzly and cloudy weather, we were blessed with a glorious summers day that had spectators searching for any shade on offer and a collection of gazebos around the ground. We entered 3 teams with the Wooburn 1 team making it through to the semi-finals following a nail biting last group game win against Penn & Tylers Green. In the semi-final Beaconsfield

24 of 40 - Wooburn Narkovians CC – Junior Cricket 2014 proved too strong but a great performance by the team to get through the 5 team group stage. The following week we had mixed fortunes at the Winchmore Hill Six-a-Side Kwik Cricket Tournament. The Wooburn 1 team came runners up in their group and then came through the mini semi-final of 2nd place teams to then lose in the 2nd placed teams final to Penn & Tylers Green with only 2 balls to go.

The Wooburn Kwik Cricket Tournament

Action from the 2013 Wooburn Kwik cricket tournament A Fantastic summer’s day, 15 teams, 5 pitches and 33 matches all contributed to an excellent days entertainment. Following the group stages Wooburn 1, Beaconsfield 2, Chesham and Chalfont St Peter all progressed to the semi-finals with Beaconsfield and Chesham making it through to the final. In the end Chesham came through as winners scoring 163 against Beaconsfield’s 139. A fantastically supported day by club members who umpired, scored, ran the bar and served a lot of hungry and thirsty spectators throughout the morning and early afternoon. This year’s tournament will be held on Sunday th 6 July.

U11s The 2013 season was a learning year for the U11 team as a number of the players were experiencing hard ball games for the first time. Even though only one game was won there were some encouraging performances from Alex O’Regan, Henry Hunt, Luke Johnson and Ben Sinfield who all also played for the U12’s as well. The win against Chalfont St Peter was based on an excellent performance in the field with Henry Hunt (3-8) being the pick of the bowlers and restricting them to 64. Luke Johnson (15) and Sean Downey (14) were the main contributors with the bat as victory was achieved for the loss of only 3 wickets in 15 overs. In reality this was an U11 team predominantly made up of U10’s, so it was always going to be a challenging season for the boys. However the experience of playing in matches should hopefully have given them an insight as to what to work on in coaching and aid their development in the long term.

Chalfont St Peter 64-9 off 20 overs (Henry Hunt 3-8, Alistair Lamming 1-6, Alex O’Regan 2-24), WNCC 65-3 off 15 overs (Luke Johnson 15*, Sean Downey 14) July 16: Lost by 45 runs. Penn & Tylers Green 130-4 off 20 overs, WNCC 85-3 off 20 overs (Ben Sinfield 15, Alex O’Regan 13*) July 22: Lost by 9 wickets. U12s Six wins and two losses saw the U12’s comfortably secure promotion to Division 3 in the end, although the late updating of the league website didn’t confirm this until late August. The season started off with two comfortable victories against Knotty Green and Marlow B with James Houghton being the pick of the bowlers. We then played Stokenchurch on a typical May bank holiday morning. It was overcast, cold and a chill wind blowing across the ground. Both teams were understrength but conjured up an incredibly close match, which seemed highly unlikely following our 51-9 off 20 overs. In reply Stokenchurch started off comfortably but had a dramatic fall of wickets in the 20’s and 30’s with Ben Cooper, Ben Sinfield and William Beards all taking quick wickets. In the end Stokenchurch got over the line but had lost 8 wickets chasing down the 52 to win.

27 of 40 - Wooburn Narkovians CC – Junior Cricket 2014

The following matches against Denham, Farnham Common and Gerrards Cross B all resulted in wins with Ben Cooper, Matt O’Regan, William Beards, James Houghton all scoring 20 or more runs to give us some solid batting performances. These were backed up by excellent bowling and fielding performances which put us in 2nd place in the league before playing Burnham. Burnham, belying their league position, were eventually too strong for us as they posted a challenging score of 111. In reply we fell 18 runs short although some clean hitting from Luke Marshall (31) raised our hopes as the innings drew to a close. A win in the final match against Hawridge would secure promotion behind table toppers Stokenchurch and Wooburn made the most of a quick sloping outfield when batting first with Ben Cooper (23) and Alfie Buckle (31) helping us to 107-8 after 20 overs. An excellent bowling and fielding performance never let Hawridge back into the match as early wickets were taken and catches held. To round things off Alex O’Regan proved that if you bowl straight you take wickets as Hawridge finished up on 48-9. A comprehensive win in the end that now see Wooburn await the challenges of Division 2. Match Results (20 over games, 4 overs per bowler, retire at 30) May 15: Won by 4 wickets. U13s For the U13s it was a case of what might have been. Poor availability in the early weeks of the season resulted in the first two league matches being forfeited. However, once the team managed to take the field, they were unstoppable, winning all six of their league matches that did take place. The season started in early May with a Cup match against Chalfont St Giles, and a defeat by 22 runs, despite an excellent 28 from U12 player Alfie Buckle. The league season finally got under way a month later, with a comfortable 38 run win over Chalfont St Peter. Tom Wright hit 31, and there was a good all round performance from Ben Cooper. Chesham were then beaten by 11 runs, captain Niall Dearsley starting a good run of form with 31, and all-rounder Ben Cooper starring again. Niall and Tom both made 30s (the retirement score at this age group) as 130 were racked up against Ballinger Waggoners, who fell 36 short against some accurate Wooburn bowling. The match against Chenies & Latimer looked like being a tight affair, 29 of 40 - Wooburn Narkovians CC – Junior Cricket 2014

Niall and Ben contributing towards a Wooburn score of 84-5. Chenies looked well of course, until Daniel Ellis (3-5) and Niall (3-6) induced a spectacular batting collapse to give Wooburn victory by 38 runs. A much closer match with Great Kingshill followed. Wooburn posted 81, largely thanks to Tom’s 32, and then good bowling from James Houghton and David Moss helped dismiss GK for 76. The last game against Wendover was even closer. Excellent batting from Niall, Ben and Tom took Wooburn to a competitive 101-6. Daniel Ellis then took a remarkable 4-11, well supported by Ben and Tom, to restrict Wendover to 99-8, Wooburn winning by just two runs.

U14s

The U14s found themselves in a very competitive league, but performed well and at one stage were in danger of finishing in the top two, before a slightly disappointing end to the season saw them drop down the table. The early matches were notable for a number of very close finishes. A 4 run defeat to Winchmore Hill was followed by a 1 run victory over Chalfont St Giles, thanks to an excellent last over by Tom Wright, and then a tie with Great Kingshill. If you wanted exciting cricket, Wooburn U14s were the team to follow! The performance of the season came at Holmer Green. The home team were chasing promotion, while Wooburn were missing two key players, but Wooburn managed to dismiss Holmer Green for 107 on a good batting pitch. A solid batting effort, built around Will Cuthbert’s 51, then saw the team home with two overs to spare. A friendly with Beaconsfield, where everyone bowled two overs, ended with another close Wooburn victory by just 3 runs, much to the delight of one or two parents! The season ended with three matches in four days, all rearranged rained off matches. We faced Stokenchurch with a team missing a number of players, but despite the ensuing defeat, it was good experience for some of our younger boys. The team then travelled to Ley Hill to play on their artificial strip, a very different pitch from the ones we are used to, and Ley Hill made their advantage count. Finally, we faced league winners, High Wycombe ‘B’ at Wooburn, and gave them a good match before going down by 20 runs. The boys produced some very good cricket over the season. Alfie Kempston’s 52 against Great Kingshill and Will Cuthbert’s 51 at Holmer Green stand out, and Oli Lawrie batted consistently well through the season. The bowling of Will

U15s The U15s had another excellent season in 2013, winning 6 of their 8 matches and finishing in 3rd place in the league table. Poor availability meant we had to forfeit our Cup match with Gerrards Cross ‘A’, and the season started with a comfortable 7 wicket win against Gerrards Cross ‘B’, Will Cuthbert taking 4-11. A narrow defeat at Little Marlow followed in a match that could have gone either way. Perhaps more risks could have been taken as we finished 8 runs short but with 6 wickets still in hand. A remarkable match at Marlow saw the team come back from the dead to snatch victory by 2 runs. In reply to Wooburn’s 110-9, Marlow raced to 80-2, but a dramatic lower order collapse followed, Alfie Jordan taking 3-2. Chalfont St Giles posted 124 on a sunny evening at Wooburn Park. An excellent opening partnership of 61 then put Wooburn on top, Michael Levy making a very good 39,Vithuraan then 34 of 40 - Wooburn Narkovians CC – Junior Cricket 2014 finished the match with an unbeaten 23. Wendover provided our stiffest test and proved too strong on the day. Chasing 114, Wooburn never really got going, despite Michael Levy’s 24, and we fell 33 short. A comfortable win over Chenies followed. Half centuries from Will Cuthbert and Vithuraan took Wooburn to 160. Chenies reaching 128 in reply, Matt Brockman taking two wickets. A one sided friendly with Marlow saw Wooburn post 173, half centuries this time for Will Cuthbert and Michael Levy, and 48 from Ali Dalton in a welcome return to form. Marlow were then bowled out for 66, Niall Dearsley taking 4-6 with his off cutters.
