Will the magical day end, taking everyone including the girl trapped inside with it? -Chloe Johnston What is band like? by Timmy Lawal Have you ever heard the CEL band (simply named “Band”) and thought, “What is it like to be in band?”. Well today, you are in for a treat. We’ll be looking at band through the eyes of our wonderful director--Mrs Crim--and two band members (one in 8th grade & a 5th grader). I myself, would also spend two days in the band room observing. According to Wyatt O’Donoghue (8th grade band member who’s been in band since the 5th grade), Band is “about having fun and playing music. Everyone just does their job” So not only do they have fun and goof around, they also get their work done on time. In my second day in band, I noticed that 5th graders who were new to band were taught how to play their instruments by older band members. According to Jacob Wilson (fifth grader), “Alex (6th grader who teaches him) tries to reach him in a funny way”. After hearing Jacob play, I’d say that Alex’s way of teaching works. Finally, I would like to say that even if they are small in number, they have a really powerful and harmonious sound that leaves listeners speechless. Wyatt O’Donoghue Mrs Crim Jacob Wilson Wanting your phone in School? Sometimes I wish we could, but would we even be learning with them in the same room? Think about it, would our phones do us any good in class? Sure we sometimes use them to search things about what we’re learning, but we also use them for social media, games, music and we use the internet to search for a song that we don’t have on our playlist or a song a friend recommends for us to hear. I don’t think we should have our phones during class, but I think we should have them during lunch because we aren’t learning anything in lunch. TRIVIA!!! by Timmy Lawal 1. It is a Jewish holiday, and it is celebrated for 8 days. This year, it started on December 3, 2018. Families celebrate by exchanging gifts each night of the holiday. They also celebrate by feasting on traditional foods such as potato pancakes, jam stuffed donuts, and fritters. The History of Kwanzaa Kwanzaa is a seven day holiday that celebrates African-American culture and heritage. It goes from Dec. 26th - Jan. 1st. People decorate in African art and use different symbols. The men wear traditional shirts called a dashiki and a hat called a kufi. They use a special mat to set a traditional unity cup, and a candle holder which holds 7 candles. They also eat special foods such as different fruits, veggies, and nuts. They also pass around gifts like we do on Christmas. - Lydia and Emma The History of Yule Yule is another holiday observed from December 21 through January 1. You may have also heard people say that this is the start of the winter solstice. People that celebrate this holiday are historic German people, Wiccans and the Northern European Christians. People burn a log for the 12 days of Christmas. Then, they take the ashes and spread them across the field hoping that this will bring them a good crop in the coming year.
