After Eiichiro Oda donated money to Kumamoto Prefecture after the 2016 earthquakes, the statue was unveiled as P h a symbol of restoration. (He actually o t o g donated the money under Luffy’s r a p h name). After this, the rest of the Straw s : 尾⽥栄⼀郎 集英社 A © / b Hat crew will have their own statues o v e - placed around the prefecture. A d a m It's no secret... P o This is incredibly exciting and I can’t o l , ...for anyone that knows me that I B wait to get out and find each one. e l o w live and breathe anime and - K u manga, so when I’m not teaching m a m o t or trying to learn Japanese I’m o P r e engrossed in the latest manga, or f e c t u r re-watching classic anime. e When I came to Kumamoto, I made it my mission to find all the best anime spots in Kyushu. So let me share what I have discovered so far. I’ll start with an anime which is arguably the closest to my heart— One Piece! The epic saga of pirates, dreams and power giving fruit that is still going strong. I am not ashamed to say that I spent too much time and money in here. But it was worth it. I also recommend the Jump store in Canal City, but that needs a whole other article…. next time... While winter in Kumamoto may be shorter and significantly less snowy than in other parts of Japan, maybe the mere thought of falling snow leaves you both figuratively and literally cold, and no-one could blame you if that icy winter wind sends you diving under the kotatsu and reaching for the nearest hot pot of nabe. Still, winter is coming, marching inexorably towards us like so many icicled zombie things from Game of Thrones. So perhaps there’s nothing else to do but embrace the inevitable winter chill and find its good points through song. Winter provides endless material for lyrics about failed romance, serves up more loneliness-related snow similes than you can shake a snowshoe at, and even offers inspiration for a few surprisingly upbeat tunes as well. Huddle up and hear these seven songs that will thaw the metaphorical snow before it piles up in your heart. Happy winter and keep warm everyone! As the title may suggest, this is a song about saying goodbye. Written by lead singer Kazumasa Oda, this song curiously made its debut on a best of album, but has been covered by at least a dozen artists and even re-recorded in a new style by Oda himself. It's still talked about a lot, with Japanese TV variety shows referencing the song often. Sci. & Tech. 34, 3 (2013) #2013 The Acoustical Society of Japan PAPER A multi-dimensional study of the emotion in current Japanese popular music Ryo Yonedaà and Masashi Yamada Graduate School of Engineering, Kanazawa Institute of Technology, 7–1 Ohgigaoka, Nonoich, 921–8501 Japan ( Received 22 March 2012, Accepted for publication 5 September 2012 ) Abstract: Musical psychologists illustrated musical emotion with various numbers of dimensions ranging from two to eight. Most of them concentrated on classical music. Only a few researchers studied emotion in popular music, but the number of pieces they used was very small. In the present study, perceptual experiments were conducted using large sets of popular pieces. In Experiment 1, ten listeners rated musical emotion for 50 J-POP pieces using 17 SD scales. The results of factor analysis showed that the emotional space was constructed by three factors, ‘‘evaluation,’’ ‘‘potency’’ and ‘‘activity.’’ In Experiment 2, three musicians and eight non-musicians rated musical emotion for 169 popular pieces. The set of pieces included not only J-POP tunes but also Enka and western popular tunes. The listeners also rated the suitability for several listening situations. The results of factor analysis showed that the emotional space for the 169 pieces was spanned by the three factors, ‘‘evaluation,’’ ‘‘potency’’ and ‘‘activity,’’ again. The results of multiple-regression analyses suggested that the listeners like to listen to a ‘‘beautiful’’ tune with their lovers and a ‘‘powerful’’ and ‘‘active’’ tune in a situation where people were around them. This commonness can be used to retrieve representative songs from a set of songs (e.g. songs released in the 80s or 90s). Previous research on musical similarity has compared two songs but has not evaluated the similarity of a song to a set of songs. The methods presented here for estimating the similarity and commonness of polyphonic musical audio signals are based on a uni¯ed framework of probabilistic generative modeling of four musical elements (vocal timbre, musical timbre, rhythm, and chord progres- sion). To estimate the commonness, we use a generative model trained from a song set instead of estimating musical similarities of all possible song-pairs by using a model trained from each song. In experimental evaluation, we used two song-sets: 3278 Japanese popular music songs and 415 English songs.Twenty estimated song-pair similarities for each element and each song- set were compared with ratings by a musician. The comparison with the results of the expert ratings suggests that the proposed methods can estimate musical similarity appropriately.

    1655 まことの華見：REAL SPLENDOUR OF 風雅“FÛGA” OF芭蕉俳句 BASHÔ’S HAIKU TAKACHI, Jun’ichiro JAPONYA/JAPAN/ЯПОНИЯ MASAOKA Shiki正岡子規, a renovator of HAIKU in Meiji Era, noticed a significance in Herbert Spenser’s “On Style” which indicated the poetics ― the capability to express “the whole” by means of a “minor image” ―, and came to assert that “Haiku” can express a high psychic idea by “opening eyes of insight through devotion to Zen,” that is, “seeing and listening into the wind and the light in objective scapes.”(108-9) By him, the good haiku of BASHÔ are 200 or less out of the whole 1000. Meanwhile, the dilettante of Japanese literature, R. H. Blyth, following Lafcadio Hearne, has translated BASHÔ, ISSA and others in the history of haiku, 1962, and asserted that “Haiku” is “Nature poetry” which stands on “animism, Zen, the sky, and over-purification without beauty,” to restrict only 100 haikus out of the whole 2000 as fine. (8, 12) By TAKACHI’s count, BASHÔ’s whole work of Hokku 発句 are 920 in all, and fine Haiku-grams are about 60. Ezra Pound in late Imagist age regarded Japanese Haiku as “Nature poem” in “On Vorticism,” 1914. But, before that, he declared the famous formulas of definition by the “Super-position” poetics, “the one image poem is a form of super-position ; that is to say, it is one idea set on top of another [idea = image]” ― that Haiku is “Image poem.” It is true that Haiku-art consists of the “Super- position” to propose the inner meaning, “Idea,” by the external figure or scape, “Image.” It is exactly the same Haiku-poetics as BASHÔ’s principle that he stated in the preface of oi-no-kobumi 『笈の小文』(Travel Notes in Knapsack) ― “To See「見ること」is nothing but Flower「花」.
