TELFORD & WREKIN COUNCIL West Midlands Property Alliance Using assets for growth Introduction Background Telford and Wrekin is a unitary district with borough status in the West Midlands. The district was created in 1974 as The Wrekin, then a non-metropolitan district of Shropshire. In 1998 the district became a unitary authority and was renamed Telford and Wrekin. It remains part of the Shropshire ceremonial county and shares institutions such as the Fire and Rescue Service with the rest of Shropshire. The borough’s major settlement is Telford, a new town designated in the 1960s incorporating the existing towns of Dawley, Madeley, Oakengates and Wellington. Telford was a new town run by the Telford Development Corporation (TDC) from the 1960s to the changes in 1974. Telford is located in central England with excellent connectivity by road and rail to Birmingham, Manchester, London and other centres. This connectivity includes an international railfreight park serving businesses looking to move goods across the UK and to air and sea ports. The population of the borough is 173,000 set to rise to 200,000 by 2030. The town was designed to accommodate a population of 200,000 and so has the necessary space and infrastructure for a growth area. Telford is home to more than 5,000 companies of which 150 are international. It has a strong automotive and engineering base as well as a broad range of other companies. There is a ready workforce of 350,000 within a 30 minute drive of Telford. Situated just 12 miles from the new Jaguar Landrover plant at i54 Telford is well placed to capitalise on supply chain opportunities. -

The Parish Plan is an important document as it states the views of the residents of Withington Parish and its future direction. It also feeds directly into the Shrewsbury Area Place Plan, which is used by Shropshire Council Departments when reviewing requirements for such projects as road improvement, housing and commercial planning, water and sewerage. This updated plan was produced by analysing answers to the questionnaire distributed to each household in March 2013. Of the 91 questionnaires distributed, 59 were completed and returned. The Shropshire Rural Community Council (RCC) carried out an independent analysis of the results using computer software specifically designed for this purpose. For Victorian and later writers the Watt steam engine became synonymous with industrial growth and progress in Britain. Today Muirhead’s biographies remain the major source for scholars of James Watt, his life and achievements. Muirhead was born in Lanarkshire in 1813 the son of Lockhart Muirhead who was principle librarian and regius professor of natural history in Glasgow University. His maternal grandmother was the first cousin of James Watt. Muirhead was educated in Glasgow College and later Balliol College, Oxford, practising law in Edinburgh for eight years before moving to Haseley Court in Oxfordshire. In 1844 Muirhead married Katharine Elizabeth, daughter of Matthew Robinson Boulton and granddaughter of Matthew Boulton, the manufacturer and entrepreneur. During his time at Oxford Muirhead became acquainted with James Watt, jnr who later requested Muirhead to write the memoir of his father. -

Who defines marriage: the state, the Church, or who else? However the state has frequently intervened over the centuries to define aspects of marriage and divorce. For instance it has decreed how old people must be before they can be married; bigamy and polygamy are forbidden; marriage between people who have a certain relationship with each other is forbidden; it has made it more difficult for people outside the EU to marry (you should see the amount of paperwork this involves for the parish priest; a degree in Law is required!). -

Appeal Decision Inquiry held on 26-28 January and 2-3 February 2016 Site visit made on 2 February 2016 by Simon Hand MA an Inspector appointed by the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government Decision date: 10 March 2016 Appeal Ref: APP/C3240/W/15/3010085 Land off Muxton Lane, Muxton, Telford, TF2 8PG The appeal is made under section 78 of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990 against a refusal to grant outline planning permission. The appeal is made by Gladman Developments Ltd against the decision of Telford and Wrekin Council. The application Ref TWC/2014/0612, dated 4 July 2014, was refused by notice dated 19 December 2014. The development proposed is outline planning application for a residential development of up to 110 dwellings with associated access with all other matters reserved. Decision 1. The appeal is dismissed. Procedural Matters 2. The application is for up to 110 dwellings on fields adjacent to Muxton Lane. Four fields are involved, with the bulk of the dwellings proposed to be on what was called the ‘southern field’ in the angle between Muxton Lane and Granville Drive. The remainder of the dwellings would be on the ‘northern field’ at the end of Granville Drive, which effectively protrudes into the countryside more than the southern field. The two other fields are proposed to be dedicated for access and nature conservation. 3. Prior to the Inquiry,Richborough the appellant made an outlineEstates application for up to 78 dwellings1 on a reduced area of the site. This was refused on 25 November 2015 with four reasons for refusal. -

Archaeology and the National Park Idea: Challenges for Management and Interpretation Marion Blockley Developing a Management Plan for the Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage Site y the end of the eighteenth century, Coalbrookdale in Shropshire was famous. It had one of the largest ironworks in England—an en- terprise symbolized by the renowned Iron Bridge, the first such Bstructure ever built on a large scale (Figure 1). Abraham Darby’s Coalbrookdale Company pioneered the mass production of iron following the breakthrough in coke smelting in 1709. The ironmasters of the East Shrop- shire Coalfield went on to make the first iron wheels, rails, boat, aqueduct, and steam locomotive, as well as early steam cylinders. The great Iron Bridge was a key step in the use of iron in construction, and has become a universal symbol of the Industrial Revolution. Other industries, based on locally sour- ced materials, an industrialised working population, an advantageous trans- port network, and local entrepreneurs, also prospered. Coalport China (Fig- ure 2) and decorative tile ware in particular gained an international reputa- tion. Figure 1. The Ironbridge reflected in the River Severn.
