Standardisation and moderation. (Reading and Writing)

With the increased Ofsted focus on the accuracy and impact of assessment to establish pupils' starting points and modifying teaching so that pupils achieve their potential, it is essential that teacher judgements are accurate so that they can build on learning. There will be opportunities for delegates to agree what ‘expected’ looks like for their year group and then apply this knowledge within the moderation process. The process can be applied to further aspects of learning back in the classroom.

Delegates will need to bring along a range of books/evidence base from which to moderate following the standardisation.

End of Key Stage 1 Statutory Assessment Arrangements Update

A two and a half hour update running from 13.30 to 16.00. The course aims to provide a summary for Year 2 teachers who are familiar with the end of Key Stage 1 statutory assessments.

Delegates will receive a concise summary of the relevant changes and constant features to the 2017 Key Stage 1 assessment arrangements, including the phonics screening check. Specific guidance will be given in the management and delivery of teacher assessments. There will be a mixture of input, discussion and opportunities for asking questions. There will also be the opportunity to moderate reading and writing informally.

A one-day course to familiarise colleagues who are new or returning to teaching Year 2 about the end of Key Stage 1 statutory assessment arrangements. The course aims to provide information for teachers and colleagues who are unfamiliar with and who have not previously administered the end of Key Stage 1 statutory assessments.

Delegates will receive detailed information about teacher assessments for the end of Key Stage 1. There will be an opportunity to discuss the assessment materials available, including the tests, tasks and phonics screening checks. There will be a mixture of input, discussion and opportunities for asking questions and moderating reading, science and writing informally.

Year 1 Phonics Screening Check Briefing

A two hour update running from 14:00 to 16:00. The course aims to provide a concise summary for Year 1 teachers and other colleagues who will be responsible for the administration of the Phonics Screening Check.

It is also applicable for any Year 2 teachers who are administering the Phonics Screening Check, and for maintained nursery teachers with children who reach the age of 6 before the end of the school year.

Specific guidance will be given in the management and delivery of the Year 1 Phonics Screening Check. There will be a mixture of input, discussion and opportunities for asking questions.

Joint Agreement Trialling and Moderation for Teachers of Year R and Year 1

An opportunity for teachers of the Early Years and Year 1 to share evidence in reading and writing.

Delegates need to bring evidence for 3 children of different abilities in each subject: mathematics and communication and language development, for discussion and moderation. There may be a range of evidence, eg: books, notes, observations, photos and lesson plans. Delegates need to know the children well as they will be asked to talk about them.

Teachers of Year R also need to bring "Development Matters" which includes the characteristics of effective learning.
