The current Japanese Style garden was evaluated during the Lithia Park Master Plan Process. Amidst Design Week for the Master Plan in June 2018, it was determined that the garden could potentially be redesigned and even expanded without negatively affecting the adjoining park spaces. We have selected landscape designer Toru Tanaka to lead the visioning and design of the Japanese Garden. Tanaka was trained in Japan and was the Director of Portland’s Japanese Garden. In August, 2018, two public information/workshops were held to engage the public about the Japanese Garden redesign. Feedback from the public meetings resulted in the following objectives: Accessibility and Physical Area Garden Design and Experience Culture and Authenticity The garden design incorporates community feedback while preserving historic elements and will only slightly expand the current garden area. A new entryway will consist of a solid wall with Japanese styled tiles and an authentic Japanese entryway.
