Biography Johnny Abush was born in Toronto, Canada on April 7, 1952. He was a quiet and private computer systems analyst, but in the 1980's became an activist in gay causes. He later said that he had become proud of being gay, but he was ashamed of being Jewish. In 1989 Johnny was diagnosed with AIDS. The crisis prompted him to re-evaluate his entire way of thinking about himself and led him to began a personal quest to discover a sense of pride in being Jewish. Johnny said that he "learned that in order to feel good about yourself, the major components of who you are have to be a source of pride" (Gil Kezwer, "Gay archives immortalize Jewish celebrities, artifacts," Jewish Bulletin, May 3, 1996). When Johnny was forced to retire from his job in 1990 due to AIDS-related complications, he took advantage of the extra time to begin a search for information about the experiences of other LGBT Jews. The first book he purchased on this subject was Twice Blessed by Christie Balka and Andy Rose. Johnny identified with the message of this book and eventually came to see that he was blessed twice by being both Jewish and gay. Frustrated by the general lack of Jewish LGBT materials, Johnny Abush began a long, arduous, but ultimately award-winning work to collect, catalogue and make available everything that is gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and Jewish. In addition to the countless hours he devoted to building the collection, he spent well over $30,000 of his own savings to build what became the Jewish Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Archives. He later developed a Web site entitled "Twice Blessed" to make his collections available internationally. In 1995 the Toronto Centre for Lesbian and Gay Studies presented him with a special Achievement Award for his internationally important work to create and develop the Jewish GLBT Archives. Although he suffered painful neuropathy

In 1997, realizing that he did not have long to live, Johnny Abush decided to ensure the continuance of his life work by donating his entire archives and computer databases to ONE National Gay and Lesbian Archives. Though quite ill, Johnny continued to work on his Web site until two days before his death on November 26, 2000. In addition to his work with the Archives, Johnny Abush volunteered with Keshet Shalom, Jewish Culture Committee, and various AIDS support services in his native city of Toronto. Written by Walter L. Williams and Marie Robertson, edited by Kyle Morgan Related Material Johnny Abush maintained the online version of his archives, Twice Blessed, until his death in November 2000. Faces Project 1. 1966-2000 Physical Description: 1.5 Linear Feet Scope and Contents The series comprises clippings of those in the Jewish gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender community who have had their picture appear in print, 1966-2000. The collection documents 590+ individuals primarily through newspaper and magazine clippings, but also by books excerpts, event flyers, Web site printouts, and other materials. The content includes articles written by and about the individual; interviews; reviews of books, music, movies, plays, exhibitions, comedy shows, and special performances; biographies; advertisements; wedding announcements; obituaries; and event promotions. Note that duplication should be expected across the materials in the name files, subject files, and publications files. Arrangement Clippings are arranged alphabetically by last name. Processing Information Originally housed on an industrial catalogue stand holding twenty-four binders, the materials have been rehoused to archival folders and boxes. General Johnny Abush sleeved these clippings and often mounted them on heavier paper stock when warranted. When no context was visible on the clipping, he supplied article title, publication title, publisher name, city of publication, volume, issue, date, and/or page numbers.

Name Files 2. 1977-2000 Physical Description: 3 Linear Feet Scope and Contents The series primarily comprises newspaper and magazine clippings, but also includes book covers and excerpts, flyers and other publicity materials, event programs, pamphlets, Web site printouts, blog and listserv postings, and other materials documenting members of the Jewish LGBT community, 1977-2000. The content includes articles written by and about the individual; interviews; reviews of books, music, movies, plays, exhibitions, comedy shows, and special performances; biographies; bibliographies; advertisements and other promotional material for events, merchandise, and services; wedding announcements; obituaries; works of fiction; comic strips; recipes; photographs; drawings; and event calendars. These clippings appear to have been used in conjunction with the Faces Project. Sleeved and mounted clippings may indicate those materials removed from the Faces Project files or intended as additions to it. Empty folders may indicate materials that have been pulled for use in the Faces Project. Note that duplication should be expected across the materials in the Faces Project, subject files, and publications files. Duplication also can be expected within the series between folders designated by a letter of the alphabet (A, B, C, etc.) and folders listed under individual names. Arrangement Materials are arranged alphabetically by last name. Processing Information The original folders have not been replaced due to their good condition and archival value. Some folders have blue trimmed labels with print text, indicating a possible early arrangement of clippings prior to the development of the Faces Project. Empty blue folders suggest that these materials may have been moved to the Faces Project at a later date. The handwritten text of the individual name labels comes in pencil, pen, and felt-tipped markers as well as in variable handwriting styles, perhaps indicating different times periods and people involved in the cataloging.

Box 16, A-Z 1978-2000 Folder 1-24 Scope and Contents Contains a folder for every letter except Q and X. Although the folder contents are limited, they offer a supplemental source to the Faces Project and the individual name listings, especially for materials from 1995 to 2000.
