Our aims in Ullapool High School are to treat each pupil as an individual and to provide a caring and friendly environment in which every child will be encouraged to develop skills and abilities which will enable them to cope with the requirements of an ever changing world. In 2017 pupils, parents and staff completed a year-long exploration of the values important to us which resulted in the new school badge, above. We are proud of this and try hard to live up to it. There is no doubt that being at school is hard work and any pupil entering Ullapool High School should be prepared to give their best at all times, otherwise the wide range of opportunity will pass them by. To make sure that every pupil’s potential is fully developed, a whole range of factors must be right for them. It is my responsibility to ensure that the learning environment within the school best suits the needs of every pupil. To be fully effective a working partnership must exist between parent, child and school with each having full confidence in the other. We must listen carefully to the community which we serve. The Parent Council serves as a link between the school and parents and is always pleased to hear of any ideas or concerns. A pupil council exists so that ideas generated by pupils and staff can be discussed. Good communication is essential if the full potential of all involved is to be achieved. Despite the considerable changes that have and are taking place in education, and our own local changes, we continue to provide an education that is appreciated by the vast majority. We are not complacent however and must continue to evaluate the service we provide and improve it accordingly. If you have any questions, comments or suggestions, regarding the prospectus or school life in general, please do not hesitate to contact me by telephone, letter or email, either via the above address or through the website contacts, http://www.ullapoolhigh.highland.sch.uk/contacts. Please keep this Prospectus to hand while your child is in Ullapool High School as I am sure it will answer some of the questions which will arise during the coming years. The most recent version will always be available on the school website, http://www.ullapoolhigh.highland.sch.uk/news/news.html. Yours sincerely, ROBBIE McFEDRIES Headteacher Ullapool High School The current pandemic has affected the normal running of schools in many ways. This Handbook reflects the way the school usually runs but does not cover all of the changes that we have made because of the pandemic. Our arrangements have changed in many ways this session, and may well change again, depending on how the pandemic develops. For the most up-to-date information about any aspect of the work of the school, please contact the school and we will be able to tell you about our current arrangements. For the latest information about how the pandemic affects children, young people and families across Scotland, please visit the Scottish Government website, which has helpful information about Coronavirus and its impact on education and children. As you will be aware, there have been changes to the way the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) is planning to provide certification for young people in the Senior Phase. School staff are currently working on changes to course content and approaches to assessment, and all of the relevant details about this will be included in next session’s Handbook. Meanwhile, further information can be found on the SQA website ( www.sqa.org.uk), which includes a section of advice for candidates and families Data Protection – any information you have supplied or any information gathered from or about pupils will be used only for the purpose for which it was provided and any relevant procedures following from this.
