Vice President Paul Starcevich [email protected]

Secretary Sue Wirt [email protected] My New Year's Eve birthday is universally celebrated. I have observed it in many different cities with many different people. For a number of Treasurer Jim Ross years, I chose to go to Carmel and the First Night celebration in [email protected] Monterey. That party lasts from late afternoon until midnight. For a

Concert Master single price, a person receives a ticket to unlimited entertainment Steve Ono venues, mostly instrumental music, singing, and dancing. Most [email protected] recently, I decided to go to the FFS party at Pat Wolk's. Membership Patty Bennett [email protected] Sal and I arrived at a house that was starting to fill with people. Sue Lifetime Member Alan Hubbart Wirt and Ann Lamb laughed as they said that Pat was worried that no one would show up. That is surely the worst nightmare for every host Members At Large Linda Guerrero but there were lots of guests. [email protected]

Bill Lehr [email protected] Pat has a house that is perfectly designed for such a party in that there are various areas for musicians to gather and she has a piano. Karen Starcevich [email protected] When I first arrived, Dick Wolk was playing some of his original compositions on the piano. He left that music on the piano and was Ann Lamb pleased that later in the evening some young musicians were enjoying Bill Johnson playing his original pieces. [email protected]

Flyer Editor Bill Johnson Evo and Jemmy Bluestein played their mandolins with Mike Reilly on [email protected] guitar. Later, Evo played piano with Jemmy on mandolin, and the

Calendar Editor McCullar brothers, Elijjah and Conor on fiddle and guitar. Maria Glover Simultaneously, in another space, Larry Cusick and Mark Ryan played HM 559-322-8677 Cell 559-281-8278 fiddle with Susan Heidebrecht and Alice Ryan dancing and singing at [email protected] times. In yet another corner, Henry and Nancy Zuniga sang and played mandolin and guitar. Logo Design

The little teak house out back was filled with singers: Sharon Brown, Rachel Alvarez, Linda Halk, Nancy Waidtlow, and Pam Gamble. The singing continued in the yard even including a round of "Happy Birthday." And so it went throughout the evening with new groups and re-groupings. Lots of wonderful music as well as good food.

Pat's party was as good as First Night but with no admission price, just a request to bring food for the potluck. Sal's and my contribution was a half sheet carrot cake. I knew about the cake but was quite surprised when I saw the inscription on it: "Happy Birthday, Madam President." There was some good natured ribbing from my friends. But there were others who were genuinely interested in meeting the new FFS president who was but a name in the Flyer.

Pat, I hope you will continue celebrating my birthday in First Night fashion. It was lots of fun. (Denise Sciandra, President)

Well, Folkies. It is that time of year again. Rogue Festival starts on February 28 and will fill the days and nights for 10 days. Most shows will be in the Tower area with some shows scheduled for locations elsewhere in Fresno, such as Full Circle Brewery and Frank's Place downtown. Several Fresno Folklore Society members will be performing and all of you are encouraged to go see them. (I was able to attend 14 shows last year and all of them were worth my time and energy to get there. I saw two shows twice). Harriette Wagner and Matt Embrey; Spencer-Morris, Boxcar Figaro, and Roving Blades will all be performing at Tower locations. Appassionata (Steve Ono and Patrick Contreras) will be on the stage at Frank's Place. Another member, Debi Ruud, owns The Voice Shop on Wishon, just north of Fern Street. This is one of the venues for events. Check Rogue Festival, 2014, online and find out who you want to go see and hear. You may start out as I did, attending one or two performances and work your way up to more. Plan to save your bucks now. Each performance has a fairly low entrance fee to encourage people to show up but all of the money goes to the performers. The venue managers have a begging bucket for donations to help support the Rogue Festival for the next year. (Sue Wirt) Bad Boys Strikes Again

There was an enthusiastic crowd in attendance for the Bad Boys Zydeco at Frank's Place in December. Kathy and Guy from Studio 65 gave a Zydeco dance lesson, followed by the concert. There were so many people on the dance floor that some people used the checkerboard floor behind the audience so they could swirl and twirl. Zydeco style dance appears to be fairly simple and reminded me of the basic steps for the rock and roll dancing of the 50’s and 60’s that we learned from watching American Bandstand. There was a potluck at the beginning of the evening which was well-attended, with lots of really cool food. Evo Bluestein's Zydeco Band was in fine form. As for me, it ended too soon. Evo has scheduled another Bad Boys Zydeco dance for February 22, 2014, at Studio 65, 2965 N Maroa, next to Centerpoint, just south of Shields. There will be a dance lesson at 7:00 p.m., followed by the concert. Dancing is encouraged. The cost is $12.00. Put on your dancing shoes and I will see you all there. (Sue Wirt)

Are You A Member of Fresno Folklore Society?

Along with changing to email newsletters for those who request it, we are also working on updating the membership rolls and have found several folks who have not renewed their memberships. Over the next few months, we will be contacting them to see if they want to continue to receive the newsletter and “at the door” breaks on concert tickets. If you are one of those people, you may renew on-line through fresnofolklore.org, using PayPal or send a check to Fresno Folklore Society, P.O. Box 4617, Fresno, CA 93744. The back page of each newsletter, which contains the mailing label, has a membership form on it as well. Current costs are $20 for an individual and $30 for a family membership. Hope to hear from you soon. (Sue Wirt and Patty Bennett)
