John Cote/IMS Photo WHAT TO WATCH FOR THIS WEEKEND: MONTOYA LOOKS TO TIGHTEN GRASP ON LEAD: With wins at St. Petersburg and the Indianapolis 500, Juan Pablo Montoya remains atop the Verizon IndyCar Series point standings. The Colombian, who has won four of his previous 10 500-mile races, leads Graham Rahal by nine points and Scott Dixon, Helio Castroneves and Will Power are within striking distance. Can Montoya repeat at Pocono and strengthen his hold on the series championship lead? ANDRETTI SEEKS BREAKTHROUGH WIN AT HOME TRACK: Marco Andretti will compete in a virtual hometown race at Pocono. Andretti can lean on family ties for some advice as Pocono is one of two tracks where all three generations of racing’s most famous family have had success. Andretti’s grandfather, open- wheel great Mario Andretti, won the 1986 race, while his father Michael won pole for the race in 1986. Marco claimed the pole for the race in 2013. KARAM RACES AT HOME: Like the Andretti family, Sage Karam hails from nearby Nazareth, Pa., and will be racing in front of friends and family. -

Sioux Chief Showdown Preview: Menards.com 200 & Menards 200 at Toledo Speedway An ARCA Menards Series doubleheader at the series’ home base of Toledo Speedway will make up rounds four and five of the 2020 Sioux Chief Showdown schedule. The Showdown, a revamped and reloaded version of the “Short Track Challenge” of years past, is open to teams from the ARCA Menards Series East & West as well and now featuring an increased overall payout with nearly $1 million in race purses, point fund money, and bonus programs available over the ten‐race series‐within‐a‐series. The Sioux Chief Showdown will bring together the best of the best from the ARCA Menards Series, the ARCA Menards Series East and ARCA Menards Series West (formerly known as the NASCAR K&N Pro Series). These ten events offer drivers who may not be able or eligible to run the full 20‐race ARCA Menards Series schedule the opportunity to run for a title. Combined with the overall ARCA Menards Series crown as well as the ARCA Menards East and ARCA Menards West championships, drivers will have four unique titles to compete for in 2020. Formerly known as the Sioux Chief Short Track Challenge, an expanded partnership with Sioux Chief will increase the event purse and point fund significantly, as well as add prestige and a variety of venues to the in‐season championship. New guidelines and common rule packages are aimed at drawing in teams and drivers from both the ARCA Menards East and ARCA Menards West series too, which were previously run as distinct separate entities from the ARCA Menards Series. -

On the Right Track How Safety Innovation Saved the Sport of NASCAR
On the Right Track How Safety Innovation Saved the Sport of NASCAR A research paper by Doug Robbins 1 Doug Robbins English Composition II 23 February 2017 Robbins – Lumerit College Composition II – Assignment 2 Since NASCAR was officially incorporated on February 21, 1948, (History.com) drivers have competed on sand, dirt and eventually, asphalt and concrete. The motivation for them was to either win the race or finish as high as you can in the running order. The prize money was the “driving” factor that kept these racers coming to the track. The ability to make enough money, in order to provide food and pay bills, outweighed the driver’s concern for their own safety. Cars crashed and drivers were severely injured or died. That was the chance they were willing to accept every time they climbed into a race car. Still the racing continued to grow and more tracks were built. While technology improved as the years went by, drivers were still getting hurt or killed as a result of on track accidents. The sport experienced multiple tragedies during the first 14 months of the 21st Century. NASCAR went through a period of reflection and reacted. The actions they took, resulted in making racing more safer for the drivers of today, than at any time in its 70 year history. On May 12th, 2000, at the New Hampshire Speedway, a 19 year old budding NASCAR star would lose his life during an (Xfinity) race practice. Adam Petty, the grandson of NASCAR racing legend Richard Petty, crashed his race car into a concrete wall, reportedly at over 130mph, while entering turn three at the speedway. -
