Results Book Results Book Sitting Volleyball 9 - 18 September Version History Version Date Created By Comments 1.0 18/09/2016 Vanessa Medeiros First Version Sitting Volleyball Voleibol sentado Competition Format and Rules Formato e regras da competição As of WED 31 AUG 2016 Paralympic competition format The eight teams in both the men’s and women’s competitions will be divided into two groups of four. The group phase is played in a round robin format, where all teams will play every other team in the group once. The top two teams in each pool will qualify for the semifinals, with the bottom two teams from each pool playing classification matches to determine the rankings from fifth to eighth. The winners of the semifinals will then play in the gold medal match, with the losing teams contesting the bronze medal match. The ranking of teams is determined by the results of matches on the basis of matches won and lost as the first criteria. If the Paralympic Results Information Systems (PRIS) requires ranking points to be allocated for matches won, one ranking point shall be allocated for each match won. The rank position within each pool is determined by the following individual criteria in order of application: 1st criteria: Matches won. 2nd criteria: Sets quotient. 3rd criteria: Points quotient. 4th criteria: Direct result of the match between the teams. Tiebreaking If two or more teams are tied on points, ties will be broken as follows: Set quotient: in the case of equality in the number of matches won and lost by two teams, the teams will be classified in descending order by the quotient resulting from the division of the number of all sets won by the number of all sets lost. Points quotient: in the case of equality in the number of sets gained and lost by two tied teams, they will be classified in descending order by the quotient resulting from the division of all points scored by the total of all points lost during all sets. If the tie continues as per the points quotient between the two teams, the ranking priority will be given to the team that won the last match between them. When the tie in matches won, sets and points quotients is between three or more teams, a new classification of these teams will be made, taking into consideration only the matches in which they were opposed to each other. In the case that the tie is still not resolved, the teams will be ranked according to their current World ParaVolley ranking. Appeals and protests will be in accordance with the appeal procedures section of the World ParaVolley discipline regulations. The sitting volleyball competition will be held in accordance with the editions of the following documents that are in force at the time of the Games: Sitting Volleyball Voleibol sentado World ParaVolley official sitting volleyball rule 2013-2016 (available at www.worldparavolley.org/wp- content/uploads/2015/02/A.1-Sitting-Volleyball-Rules-2013-2016-w-diagrams-guidelines.pdf) World ParaVolley discipline regulations (available at The IPC handbook (available at www.paralympic.org/the-ipc/handbook) World ParaVolley, working with Rio 2016 Competition management, will be responsible for the technical control and direction of the sitting volleyball competition at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games. Scoring Matches are the best of five sets. In the first four sets, the winner is the team that reaches 25 points first - if a fifth set is necessary, the winner is the first to reach 15 points. In all sets, a margin of at least two points is required for victory. Changes since the London 2012 Paralympic Games The competition format has changed since London 2012 in the following ways: The men’s tournament has eight teams rather than 10. There is no quarterfinals phase in the men’s competition. Classification matches will not have any crossover qualification. Points awarded per match in the pool phase is different. Differences from the Olympic Games The competition format and some rules differ from Olympic volleyball in the following ways: The net height is lower and the court and field of play are smaller. Players can block and attack the serve. The men’s and women’s tournaments have eight teams rather than 12. The tournament structure for men’s and women’s tournaments is different. The tiebreak criteria is different. The last two years have been characterized by achievement and change. Our premier event, the 2016 Paralympic Games Sitting Volleyball competition, was a great success in Brazil with enthusiastic spectators and some amazing matches presented by our athletes. The other major competition, the 2016 Intercontinental, was held in China and featured a record number of teams and the best Opening Ceremony of any event to date. In 2017, the Zone Championships were successfully delivered in Croatia (PVE), China (PVAO), Rwanda (PVA) and Canada (PVPA) and the related Zone General Assemblies were conducted with new personnel being elected. Also in 2017 the ASEAN Para Games were held in Malaysia and the Youth ParaPan Am Games in São Paulo, Brazil at which new Youth Volleyball Rules were trialled. A new competition was created and realised in Hangzhou, China - the 2017 World Super 6 for women which featured prize-money for the first time. The latter half of 2017 also saw the beginning of changes to our leadership team with the positions of Chairs of the Commissions and the Technical Delegate for Tokyo 2020 being advertised and Assistant Sport Directors being appointed to achieve refreshment and renewal of our human resources as we plan for the future.
