Read Full License Page 1/16 Abstract Background The action mechanism of silver diammine uoride (SDF) on plaque micro-ecology was seldom studied. This study investigated micro-ecological changes in dental plaque on extensive carious cavity of deciduous teeth after topical SDF treatment. Methods Deciduous teeth with extensive caries freshly removed from school children were collected in clinic. After initial plaque collection, each cavity was topically treated with 38% SDF in vitro. Repeated plaque collections were done at 24 hours and 1 week post-intervention. Post-intervention micro-ecological changes including microbial diversity, microbial metabolism function as well as inter-microbial connections were analyzed and compared after Pyrosequencing of the DNA from the plaque sample using Illumina MiSeq platform. Results After SDF application, microbial diversity decreased (p>0.05). Microbial community composition post- intervention was obviously different from that of supragingival and pre-intervention plaque as well as saliva. -

Abstract Actinomycosis remains characteristically uncommon, but is still an important cause of morbidity. Its clinical presentation is usually indolent and chronic as slow growing masses that can evolve into fistulae, and for that reason are frequently underdiagnosed. Actinomyces spp is often disregarded clinically and is classified as a colonizing microorganism. In this review of literature, we concomitantly present 11 cases of actinomycosis with different localizations, diagnosed at a tertiary hospital between 2009 and 2016. The development of dental caries involves acidogenic and aciduric Gram-positive bacteria (mutans streptococci, lactobacilli and actinomycetes). Periodontal diseases have been linked to anaerobic Gram-negative bacteria (Porphyromonas gingivalis, Actinobacillus, Prevotella and Fusobacterium). Given the incidence of oral disease, increased resistance by bacteria to antibiotics, adverse affects of some antibacterial agents currently used in dentistry and financial considerations in developing countries, there is a need for alternative prevention and treatment options that are safe, effective and economical. -

A goat with neurologic signs had multifocal abscesses containing sulfur granules in the right brain and temporal bone. His- tologically, the lesions consisted of pyogranulomas with several radiating bacterial colonies of various sizes. A tangled mass of filamen- tous and gram-positive bacteria was recognized in the central part of the colony. Actinomyces naeslundii antigen was detected in the colonies of bacteria in the brain and neighboring bone tissue by immunohistochemistry. Actinomycosis involving the central nervous system (CNS) and temporal bone is rare in animals. Cerebral infection with A. naeslundii may have resulted from direct extension from cervicofacial regions because the CNS lesions were distributed asymmetrically and were continuous with the right temporal bone. The name “Actinomyces suis” was applied to each actinomycete isolate from swine actinomycosis by Grässer in 1962 and Franke in 1973. Nevertheless, this specific species was not included in the “Approved List of Bacterial Name” due to absence of the type cultures. Therefore, “Actinomyces suis” based on the description of Franke 1973 has been considered as “species incertae sedis”. We isolated a number of Actinomyces strains from swine. The representative strains of them was designated as Chiba 101 that was closely similar to the description in “Actinomyces suis” reported by Franke in 1973. Interestingly, it was found that the biological characteristics of J. Vet. Med. Sci. these strains were also very similar to those of Actinomyces denticolens. Furthermore, the average 80(11): 1650–1656, 2018 nucleotide identity (ANI) value between strain Chiba 101 and the type-strain of Actinomyces denticolens (=DSM 20671T) was found to be 99.95%. -

Due to its expansive local growth, it can simulate a malignant tumour. Subsequent hematogenous dissemination to distant organs can mimic metastases and further increase suspicion for malignancy. A case of severe disseminated pelvic actinomycosis associated with intrauterine device is described here. The patient presented with a pelvic mass mimicking a tumour, bilateral ureteral obstruction, ascites, multinodular involvement of the liver, lungs and spleen, inferior vena cava thrombosis and extreme cachexia. Actinomycosis was diagnosed by liver biopsy and confirmed by culture of Actinomyces naeslundii from extracted intrauterine contraceptive device (IUD). Prolonged treatment with aminopenicillin and surgery resulted in recovery with moderate sequelae. Introduction Actinomycosis is a disease with characteristic features, including a slow growth of a solid mass arising from local massive fibroproduction, spread across tissues regardless of natural barriers resembling a malignant tumour, formation of abscesses and fistulas, and growth of bacteria in the colonies surrounded by granulomatous inflammation, macroscopically described as sulphur granules [1].
