Kimmy (7) needed a wheelchair to get from place to place, but hadn’t received a new one since she was 3. However, TRPIL received a donation of a powered wheelchair from the parents of another child. TRPIL facilitated the donation of this newer, powered wheelchair for Kimmy, and of course it was a perfect fit! Now Kimmy has a device that works for her needs—and we were happy to make it happen!

TRPIL Progress Report Page 7 Never Say Never—An Essay By Ed Pahula, as Featured on WCCF.Net!!

I was born with cerebral palsy. I had a normal childhood and attended regular school – I just used a walker or wheelchair to get around. Still, as a child, my family had a negative attitude about my goals. I was frequently told that “if you are lucky, you’ll get a job at McDonald’s.” They told me I’d never drive a car, I’d never buy a house, and I’d never be a Dad.

As a young adult in the early 1990s, I didn’t see people with disabilities working in standard jobs, driving, owning homes, or having children. At that time, society didn’t give much thought to people with disabilities, or making everyday activities accessible.

In 1996, I was invited to a meeting on empowerment at TRPIL. I’d never heard of it; I didn’t know anything about what they did. This was a group of people with disabilities simply trying to work together to meet their goals of improving services and accessibility in our community. I got nominated to be on the board of directors. Nine months later, I got hired for a part-time job.

TRPIL changed my life. Not because I got a job or a paycheck, but because I got access to information. I was able to learn how to drive with hand controls. I learned to manage my resources. In 2009, I purchased a house, and became a Dad. And thanks to TRPIL, for 21 years, I’ve been able to help other individuals with disabilities take control of their lives to reach their own goals. – Ed Pahula

As a center for independent living, TRPIL provides advocacy, independent living skills training, information and referral, peer support and transition services, along with home modifications, assistive technology, person-centered counseling, health and wellness, workforce readiness, and other personal development services at its headquarters in Washington and satellite office in Monroeville. TRPIL employs more than 680 individuals with about 600 direct care workers who provide daily services to TRPIL’s consumers. Over 51% of staff and board members identify as having a disability.

TRPIL has an annual operating budget of nearly $14 million.

Extending its Impact TRPIL is seeking to address three urgent goals: 1) meet a growing demand through the strategic expansion of key programs and services; 2) increase efficiency and, ultimately, reduce costs by consolidating operations in Washington; 3) enhance downtown Washington and provide a community benefit by renovating and restoring the historic YWCA building as its new head- quarters and a center for community activities and events.

The Plan TRPIL has launched a major project to renovate the 27,000 square-foot YWCA making it a completely accessible building. The construction will preserve the historically significant aspects of the 1928 example of Elizabethan Revival architecture. A 5,000 square foot life safety area that includes a state-of-the-art elevator has been added.

The first portion of the overall project came in at a cost of $4.3 million. This is currently underway, and will create program areas that will accommodate about 80% of TRPIL’s staff. The next segment will renovate the gymnasium/stage area and complete some offices on the first, second and third levels along the hallways at a projected cost of $4.2 million. The final project will be the completion of the conservatory on the third level, which was formerly $405,000 (renovation of common areas and community meeting areas).

A capital campaign has been launched to secure the $8.9 million for the project, which includes all renovation costs and related fees and expenses. TRPIL is enlisting a capital campaign cabinet has been formed to engage the community and assist with fundraising.

Funds Committed (as of 10/30/18): Government $4,060,000 Charitable Foundation $ 645,000 and Corporations Individuals $ 174,000 TRPIL $1,000,000 TOTAL $5,879,000

TOTAL Needed to complete project : $8,905,000
