Dear Parishioners,

I have always been told to never pray for patience. The reason is that if you do, your patience will be tested beyond belief. Just when you ask for patience, a flurry of frustrating events seems to occur from traffic jams to slow computers to a long phone call with a person you don’t want to talk to. It is good to be patient, and I do actually encourage each of us to strive to be more patient in our lives. To me, patience is a way that we can reflect our belief in the goodness of each person and their God- given dignity. If I believe that the person going slow in front of me on the Kennedy is a beloved child of God, then I may be less apt to shout and lay on the horn. If I seek to put myself in the shoes of the person who is going on and on when I am late for an appointment, I may not get impatient, but have love and compassion for . Patience is also a necessity when we speak about God. If you are like me living in our fast-food culture, I would prefer everything , if not yesterday. That includes God. I want God to change me now, not later. I want to be a better person today, not tomorrow. Yet God often takes the long- term view on everything. God prefers to slowly and patiently help us transform our hearts and our lives, never intruding on our freedom to choose right or wrong. Yet we seek to trust in God’s presence and love in our lives, that God will make good on his promises. This is what faith is, the gift of God that St. Paul asks us to “stir into flame.” When we can live with this trust in God’s promises and grace in our lives, then we allow that faith within us to grow into a blazing fire. A few years ago, I was given a prayer by Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, a French Jesuit priest and scientist who died in 1955. May this prayer be our prayer today as we seek patiently to grow our faith:

Above all, trust in the slow work of God. We are quite naturally impatient in everything to reach the end without delay. We should like to skip the intermediate stages. We are impatient of being on the way to something unknown, something new. And yet it is the law of all progress that it is made by passing through some stages of instability — and that it may take a very long time.

And so I think it is with you; your ideas mature gradually — let them grow, let them shape themselves, without undue haste. Don’t to force them on, as though you could be today what time (that is to say, grace and circumstances acting on your own good will) will make of you tomorrow. Only God could say what this new spirit gradually forming within you will be. Give Our Lord the benefit of believing that his hand is leading you, and accept the anxiety of feeling yourself in suspense and incomplete.

On Flying Standby, and Faith © 2013 by John B. Reynolds ([email protected]) A couple of years ago, I was explaining my business travel itinerary to a co-worker. I explained how I needed to give a 6:00 PM quality assurance presentation to some retail grocery store managers at a location in southern Illinois a few hours from St. Louis. I explained how my plan was to fly into STL, get a rental car, and drive to the presentation venue. Then I explained that because I couldn’t get back to the airport in time that night after the gig to catch the last flight , I would just stay at some hotel on the way back to the airport and fly out first thing in the morning. She asked me where exactly I’d be staying. I told her I didn’t know, reiterating that I’d drive toward St. Louis until I got tired, then find a hotel, then check-in. Carrie looked at me in disbelief. Really. She said she could never travel that way, explaining that she needed to have everything absolutely buttoned up before she left her place with bags in hand. I should introduce her to my daughter sometime… Sarah could write a book about travel with no firm plans up-front, and I’ve got the working title: Flying Standby: The Certainty of Uncertainty. Back in March, a friend of hers — a United Airlines employee — gave her a special year-long pass entitling her to free airfare on United. The catch is that she has to fly standby and hope a seat opens up on the flight she’s after. Often, it does, but sometimes it doesn’t. I’m not nearly as buttoned up in my travel as Carrie. At the same time, I totally couldn’t do what Sarah does. Too many unknowns, and while I don’t mind not knowing my hotel for the night, I like knowing that when I finally do reach the airport, the airline of my choice will have a seat waiting for me. Sarah, by comparison, wings it — literally, I guess — in the moment. A couple of months ago, she flew home from Cancun via New Jersey and Washington, DC. And just last weekend, she flew home from New Orleans via Houston. Not my routes of choice, but that’s precisely the point, I suppose. Flying standby has a faith element to it, and today’s readings are all about faith. First Habakkuk cries out to the Lord because of the destruction and violence all around. God sends the prophet a vision and encourages him to wait for the vision’s reality, adding, “The rash one has no integrity; but the just one, because of his faith, will live.” In the second reading, the Apostle Paul encourages Timothy to “Take as your norm the sound words that you heard from me, in the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.” And that same Christ Jesus, in response to his disciples’ request that he increase their faith, answers with words which for me create one of the most powerful visual images in the Book: “If you have faith the size of a mustard , you would be able to say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you.” I love that, but I’ve got a long way to go on my faith journey to get there. Oddly, by comparison, Sarah, who is never sure she’ll get a seat on the flight she wants, but who is faithful just the same of always getting home safe and sound, may be a little further ahead of me on the exact same road.

Baptism: All are welcome to inquire about our Baptismal program at St. Vincent de Paul Parish. We do encourage you to register your family as parishioners and become active in our community. Please contact Mary Jo Polark ([email protected]) at the parish center to register for a Baptism preparation class. The classes are facilitated by our Deacon, Dean Vaeth, and are held on the 3rd Thursday of each month at 7:00 p.m. in the parish center. You may attend this class either before or after your child is born. Following class attendance and after your child is born, please contact Mary Jo to schedule a date for your baby’s Baptism. Baptisms are celebrated on the 4th Sunday of the month at 11:30 a.m. with Deacon Dean Vaeth presiding, or during a regular Sunday mass. We limit the number of baptisms at each ceremony to five. The sacrament of Baptism is not celebrated during the Lenten season.

Marriage: Please contact Mary Jo Polark ([email protected]) at the Office of the Pastor to discuss the celebration of the sacrament of marriage here at St. Vincent’s, or in another parish concerning preparation and prenuptial matters. For baptized Catholics, the proper and valid form of celebrating the sacrament of marriage is within a Catholic church in the presence of a priest or deacon. The first item to plan is the selection of a date and time. In order to celebrate the sacrament of marriage at St. Vincent’s one needs to be registered parishioner for four months prior to discussion of a date. Weddings at St. Vincent’s are celebrated on Saturdays only, at 1:00 p.m. or 3:00 p.m. Weddings are not celebrated during the season of Lent, Holy Week, or Saturdays that conflict with other parish events. Mary Jo Polark at the Office of the Pastor confirms all reservations for weddings.
