The reason is that if you do, your patience will be tested beyond belief. Just when you ask for patience, a flurry of frustrating events seems to occur from traffic jams to slow computers to a long phone call with a person you don’t want to talk to. It is good to be patient, and I do actually encourage each of us to strive to be more patient in our lives. To me, patience is a way that we can reflect our belief in the goodness of each person and their God- given dignity. If I believe that the person going slow in front of me on the Kennedy is a beloved child of God, then I may be less apt to shout and lay on the horn. If I seek to put myself in the shoes of the person who is going on and on when I am late for an appointment, I may not get impatient, but have love and compassion for them. Patience is also a necessity when we speak about God. If you are like me living in our fast-food culture, I would prefer everything now, if not yesterday. That includes God. I want God to change me now, not later. I want to be a better person today, not tomorrow. Yet God often takes the long- term view on everything. God prefers to slowly and patiently help us transform our hearts and our lives, never intruding on our freedom to choose right or wrong. Yet we seek to trust in God’s presence and love in our lives, that God will make good on his promises. This is what faith is, the gift of God that St. Paul asks us to “stir into flame.” When we can live with this trust in God’s promises and grace in our lives, then we allow that faith within us to grow into a blazing fire. A few years ago, I was given a prayer by Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, a French Jesuit priest and scientist who died in 1955. May this prayer be our prayer today as we seek patiently to grow our faith: Above all, trust in the slow work of God. We are quite naturally impatient in everything to reach the end without delay. We should like to skip the intermediate stages. We are impatient of being on the way to something unknown, something new. And yet it is the law of all progress that it is made by passing through some stages of instability — and that it may take a very long time. And so I think it is with you; your ideas mature gradually — let them grow, let them shape themselves, without undue haste. Don’t try to force them on, as though you could be today what time (that is to say, grace and circumstances acting on your own good will) will make of you tomorrow. Only God could say what this new spirit gradually forming within you will be. Give Our Lord the benefit of believing that his hand is leading you, and accept the anxiety of feeling yourself in suspense and incomplete. The narrative follows Rick Grimes, a deputy from a small town in Georgia. Having been in a coma during the outbreak, he wakes up to find walkers1 roaming the streets. He joins some survivors, reunites with his family and eventually becomes the leader of the group (S1E3). It is during this initial reunion that we are introduced to the first of the female characters discussed in this chapter, Carol. The second, Maggie, is introduced at the start of the second season when Rick arrives at her father’s farm (S2E2). The third character, Michonne, appears briefly at the end of S2, with a more extended introduction at the start of S3. The three are the longest-surviving female characters and are still alive at the time I am writing2. All three evolved from a pre-outbreak life connected to domestic spaces and distanced from acts of killing to a post-outbreak life as warriors and protectors of the group.

He had said, “I hope to come unto thee shortly” (1 Timothy 3:14), and as this had not taken place, instead of coming to him, he consoles him by a letter, when he was grieving perhaps for his absence, and oppressed by the cares of the government, which he had now taken in hand. For even great men, when they are placed at the helm, and are charged with the direction of the Church, feel the strangeness of their position, and are overwhelmed, as it were, by the waves of business. This was particularly the case when the Gospel was first preached, when the ground was everywhere unturned, and all was opposition and hostility. There were, besides, heresies commencing from the Jewish teachers, as he has shown in his former Epistle. Nor does he only comfort him by letters, he invites him to come 975 to him: “Do thy diligence,” he says, “to come shortly unto me,” and, “when thou comest, bring with thee the books, but especially the parchments.” (2 Timothy 4:9 and 13.) And he seems to have written this Epistle when his end was approaching.

    e Interdisciplinary Journal of Popular Culture and Pedagogy We All Have Jobs Here: Teaching and Learning with Multiple Intelligences in The Walking Dead Elizabeth Gartley South Portland, Maine, USA [email protected] ABSTRACT A model can be useful when engaging secondary students in team-building by appreciating differing skills and identifying their own strengths. In this example, a model was provided that students to indulge in the transgression of popular culture and zombie media. Middle and high school students participated in a critical thinking and team-building unit which capitalized on student interest in zombie popular culture, particularly the AMC series The Walking Dead. Students engaged in cooperative activities with a “zombie apocalypse” theme. Activities included identifying roles for team members based on individual skill sets in order to strengthen to group as a whole. This approach allowed students to approach this unit as assembling a “zombie apocalypse team,” an idea borrowed from popular culture. The popular culture “zombie apocalypse team” shows that survival depends on building a cooperative team of individuals with disparate but complementary skills and approaches to problem solving. Howard Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences can provide theoretical framework to examine how the group of survivors in The Walking Dead combine multiple intelligences, as represented by individual characters, to survive. This model can provide a more detailed context to allow students to their own strengths within a team.
