CITY OF WOODLAND PROCLAMATION HONORING

WHEREAS, Dustin Pedroia was born in Woodland on August 17, 1983 to Guy and Debbie Pedroia; and;

WHEREAS, Dustin, at an early age, displayed such talent and played Little League, League in Woodland amassing tremendous recognition for his baseball skills; and;

WHEREAS, Dustin Pedroia attended Woodland High School and played football and baseball. His football career ended as a freshman after a hit from future All-Pro NFL linebacker shattered his ankle. As a senior baseball player, Dustin compiled a .445 batting average while going the entire season without a strike out and was chosen as the league's Most Valuable Player; and;

WHEREAS, upon high school graduation Dustin was the recipient of an athletic scholarship to play baseball for where in his three years at ASU, never hit below .347 and had a career average of .384, starting all 185 games. To help ASU recruit better pitchers, Dustin demonstrated his character by relinquishing the last two years of his athletic scholarship. Dustin was also named ASU On Deck Circle Most Valuable Player; and;

WHEREAS, Dustin was drafted by the Red Sox in the second round of the 2004 Draft, and was the 65th draft pick overall. During three seasons in , Dustin batted .308 while playing second base and . He spent 2004 with the Augusta GreenJackets and Class A-Advanced Sarasota Red Sox, part of 2005 with the - A , and parts of 2005 and 2006 with the Triple-A ; and;

WHEREAS, Dustin became the starting for the in 2007 winning the Rookie of the Year award and was selected to the 2007 Topps Major League Rookie All-Star Team; and;

WHEREAS, in Game 7 of the 2007 American League Championship Series Dustin went 3 for 5 including a double, homerun and five RBI’s to secure the Red Sox's spot in the .

WHEREAS, Dustin led off Game 1 of the against the series with a homerun, making him only the second player, and the first rookie in history to lead off the Series with a . The Red Sox went on to win their second World Series title in four seasons – and the first World Series championship for Dustin; and;

WHEREAS, Dustin shined both defensively and offensively during the 2008 regular season, and was awarded the American League MVP, Gold Glove and Silver Slugger awards. That season he hit .326 with 17 homers and stole 20 bases on 21 attempts. He also had a great defensive season making only six errors through 157 games; and

WHEREAS, after 14 seasons, all with the Boston Red Sox, Dustin has retired as a player with the Boston Red Sox and from major league baseball; and

WHEREAS, Dustin has also commendably represented our great City of Woodland as a hometown hero; and

WHEREAS, Dustin has accomplished all this while being a great role model for those young people who wish to emulate his great character and aspire to a similar level of athletic and professional greatness; and;

WHEREAS, as residents and officials of the City of Woodland, we have all benefited immensely from Dustin’s dignified and proud representation of our city.

NOW THEREFORE, the City of Woodland, California, asks all our city residents to join us in proudly honoring and celebrating Dustin Pedroia for his profound accomplishments and inspiring example of commitment to excellence and wish him and his family well in his retirement as a player.
