For YUCK Circus, it’s a hard no. With their award- winning acrobatics, high-flying aerials, absurdly funny confessions and a live Nutella binge, this all-female troupe is serving true Aussie humour on the international stage for the first time. Following a storming premiere season at Fringe World and Adelaide Fringe, YUCK Circus makes their European debut at the Edinburgh Fringe. The seven strong cast of elite circus artists are bringing their true personal stories of young womanhood to the stage and sky, using their award-winning mix of acrobatics, aerials and absurdly funny dance moves to rip into the grotesque of beauty standards, bougie art, tampons, and bloody gender stereotypes. YUCK Circus is first full-length work from Creator and Director Georgia Deguara, whose company strongly champions the industry-wide movement for greater representation of strong female bodies and voices on stage. The show’s authentic new voice has already won Australia’s attention (and multiple awards including Best Emerging Artist at Adelaide Fringe 2019) in celebrating mateship and destigmatising “women’s issues” with genuine humour and cracking circus skills – from three high stacks, to hand-balancing, to the wince-inducing sideshow ‘blockhead’ – now set for the intimate surrounds of the Spiegeltent at Underbelly’s Circus Hub on The Meadows. Described as “everything contemporary circus should be” by Melbourne Fringe producer Danny Delhunty, YUCK Circus isn’t afraid to embrace the uncomfortable in making ‘gross’ entertaining for everyone, and challenge stigma along the way. Their events and festivals division operates one of the largest operations at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, selling over 460,000 tickets for over 200 shows, in 22 venues over 25 days in 2018. 2018 was the sixth year Underbelly produced Edinburgh’s Christmas for City of Edinburgh Council which saw 771,074 tickets sold to visitors from more than 40 countries, and the second year of producing Edinburgh’s Hogmanay also on behalf of City of Edinburgh Council, which welcomed 160,000 over 3 days. 2019 marks the eleventh year of Underbelly Festival on the Southbank - one of the biggest multi-arts offerings in London and London’s original pop-up festival, with over 140 shows programmed over 6 months on the South Bank. Underbelly also produces Christmas in Leicester Square, Udderbelly Festival in Hong Kong, West End Live in Trafalgar Square for Westminster City Council and the Society of London Theatre. Underbelly Productions is the theatrical arm of Underbelly, presenting, producing and promoting a diverse programme of international work. In 2017, in association with Cameron Mackintosh, they produced a major revival of the classic musical Five Guys Named Moe, which ran for 30 weeks at the purpose built Marble Arch Theatre. This scorching production garnered rave reviews and was nominated for 3 WhatsOnStage Awards (including Best Musical Revival) and as Best Entertainment and Family at the 2018 Olivier Awards. In 2017 they were also Associate Producers on the UK Premiere of the musical Big Fish starring Kelsey Grammar, which enjoyed a sold-out Christmas run at The Other Palace. As part of the 2018 Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Don’t Tell Me Not to Fly a one-woman cabaret featuring a revolving cast of some of the West End’s favourite leading ladies premiered in the 900 seater McEwan Hall. In 2018 Underbelly sold over 1.5 million tickets to their various events. .

Anyway, the figure is marginally up (approximately 2.5%) on the 2010 figure. The Scotsman quotes provisional figures from the super venues, including: Underbelly with a claimed 19% increase in ticket sales (this excludes the McEwan Hall which was not available this year - not sure that this makes for a valid comparison), Gilded Balloon up 10%, Pleasance up 6% while Assembly expects the figures to be "marginally up" on last year.

In 2019 alone, the gross value added to the economy by festivals was £1.76 billion, and almost 1 in 3 Britons watched Glastonbury on TV. Live music is also a major reason why people visit the UK’s nations and regions: in 2019 music tourists spent £460 million across the Midlands alone and sustained more than 45,000 jobs nationwide. Planning for this year’s festivals, live performances and events is taking place now, and while the vaccine rollout is cause for optimism, organisers need confidence that this work and investment will not go to waste. Central to that confidence is insurance. Without insurance, the events we know and love simply won’t take place this year—vaccine or no vaccine. Sustaining losses like those we’ve seen in 2020 for another year isn’t an option, and hundreds of businesses in the events supply chain have already been forced to fold. The Government has backed insurance for the film and television industry to the tune of £500 million. It’s now time to do this for other creative industries. There are a number of forms this could take.

    Hannah Gadsby Comedian / Writer / Art Lady Hannah Gadsby is an award-winning Australian comedian who thinks quickly and moves slowly. She is sardonic, laconic and, after numerous bone crunching accidents, bionic. Her droll delivery, delightful wordplay and heart-breakingly funny, self-deprecating observations have delighted audiences all over the world. Hannah began her stand-up career in 2006 when she was “discovered” at the Hobart Comedy Festival. Relieved that she existed, she went on to win the national final of Raw Comedy and followed this up with a very impressive second place in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival’s So You Think You’re Funny? Since then, Hannah has performed to sold out houses at comedy festivals across Australia, accepted an invitation to perform at the exclusive Kilkenny Comedy Festival, the prestigious Montreal Just for Laughs comedy festival and appeared at the Edinburgh Fringe and New Zealand Comedy Festivals. In 2013, Hannah’s solo show Happiness is a Bedside Table was nominated for Best Show in the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. Surprised and relieved that she maintains a healthy pallor in front of the camera, Hannah took up a regular spot on ABC TV’s Adam Hills Tonight from 2011-2013. She has also made appearances on Channel 10’s Good News Week, ABC TV’s Spicks and Specks, Agony Aunts and New Zealand TV 3’s 7 Days. Hannah is currently writing her first book, based on her mildly alarming medical history. In 2011 she released her first stand-up DVD “Kiss Me Quick I’m Full of Jubes” which she followed up with the release of “Mrs Chuckles” in 2012, both through Madman Entertainment.
