Gnomon Sundials – Student Worksheet
Name ________________________ Gnomon Sundials – Student Worksheet GNOMON (shadow maker) Time read at point of shadow Arab philosophers of 9th and 10th centuries were amongst the first advanced scientists and mathematicians in Europe. They discovered that using a gnomon, a triangular shadow maker, would indicate hours of exactly the same length of standard time, no matter what time of year it was. Sundials were often ornate and had mottos such as: • Tempus fugit (Time flies – Latin) • Let others tell of storms and showers. I only tell of sunny hours (Anon) To prepare your gnomon Fold a sheet of paper in half. The fold will be the top of the gnomon and will be used to reinforce it. With the protractor, measure your school’s latitude (in this case 32oS) away from the fold then draw that line Name ________________________ Gnomon Sundials – Student Worksheet about 9cm long. Draw another line about 1cm below this to make the flaps that will stick onto the base in the worksheet. Leaving the paper folded cut round the outside of the gnomon. Fold out the flaps to attach to the prepared base below. The gnomon should be attached with the fold running down to the north or origin of the rays on the base. The base of the sundial Name ________________________ Gnomon Sundials – Student Worksheet Observations What time did your sundial read? __________________ What time is it according to your watch, clock or mobile? _______________________________________________ Why is there a difference? __________________________ Both Perth and Kalgoorlie are in the same time zone but their sundials read noon at different times. -

Country, House, Fiction Kristen Kelly Ames
Conventions Were Outraged: Country, House, Fiction Kristen Kelly Ames A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY GRADUATE PROGRAM IN ENGLISH YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO June 2014 © Kristen Kelly Ames, 2014 ii ABSTRACT The dissertation traces intersections among subjectivity, gender, desire, and nation in English country house novels from 1921 to 1949. Inter-war and wartime fiction by Daphne du Maurier, Virginia Woolf, Nancy Mitford, P. G. Wodehouse, Elizabeth Bowen, and Evelyn Waugh performs and critiques conventional domestic ideals and, by extension, interrupts the discourses of power that underpin militaristic political certainties. I consider country house novels to be campy endorsements of the English home, in which characters can reimagine, but not escape, their roles within mythologized domestic and national spaces. The Introduction correlates theoretical critiques of nationalism, class, and gender to illuminate continuities among the naïve patriotism of the country house novel and its ironic figurations of rigid class and gender categories. Chapter 1 provides generic and critical contexts through a study of du Maurier’s Rebecca, in which the narrator’s subversion of social hierarchies relies upon the persistence, however ironic, of patriarchal nationalism. That queer desire is the necessary center around which oppressive norms operate only partially mitigates their force. Chapter 2 examines figures of absence in “A Haunted House,” To the Lighthouse, and Orlando. Woolf’s queering of the country house novel relies upon her Gothic figuration of Englishness, in which characters are only included within nationalist spaces by virtue of their exclusion. -

Tempus Fugit
TEMPUS FUGIT Melissa Pheterson In 1941 my grandfather’s mother opened a letter informing her son of his duty to serve in World War II. She crumpled on the floor and died of grief. Last Sunday, my mother, who lives in the town next to mine, returned from a grueling weekend of caring for my daughter—cooking dinner, coax- ing her to eat, bathing her, sustaining her kicks of protest over the slathering of lotion—only to collapse into bed at twilight with her iPad and find on Facebook a picture of Paige taken with her other grandmother, both forcibly yet prettily posed at a restaurant. “Facebook is a crock of…soup!” she texted me before weeping into the night, or so I deduced from her splotchy face at the airport the next morning. We were on the way to visit my grandparents. 87 88 VALPARAISO FICTION REVIEW “If your in-laws were nicer,” she muttered, re-counting the sandwiches she’d made for Paige to consume in-flight, “I would cook for them. So you wouldn’t have to set foot in a chain restaurant.” My grandparents never bothered to change the previous owners’ Tacky Eighties aesthetic, whose centerpiece was a Formica bar with etched glass waiter carrying a tray of glowing absinthe martinis. My grandfather Jacob used to call him “Harry,” summoning him with a whistle. Now Harry lords it over him; you can just see his tuxedoed silhouette from the den, where my grandpa dozes in his recliner or reads the same paragraph over and over; my grandmother recently bought him a large-print version of Fifty Shades of Grey, trusting her talk shows. -
Death Judgement Hell Heaven
Myztery Tempus Fugit Death Judgement Hell Heaven MRPB77046 Myztery Tempus Fugit Mystcal Rose Press Myztery, Tempus Fugit, Copyright © 2012, Mystical Rose Productions, Chatham, Ontario, Canada. All rights reserved. © 2012, Mystical Rose Productions Chatham, Ontario www.mysticalroseproductions.com www.myztery-tempus-fugit.net www.myztery.net [email protected] Printed in Canada Introduction by Pete Mason “Tempus Fugit” is Latin for “Time flies.” “Tempus fugit memento mori” means “time flies, remember death.” Tempus Fugit, as an album and eventual video idea for Myztery, came to me sometime around 2006 in Burnaby, BC. I had been exposed to a classic spiritual book called “The Four Last Things” by Fr. Martin von Cochem, O.S.F.C. (Tan Books and Publishers, Inc) and the four last things are listed as “Death, Judgement, Hell and Heaven.” The cover of the book quotes Hebrews 9:27: “. it is appointed unto men once to die, and after this the judgment.” In the opening pages it also quotes the book of Ecclesiasticus 7:40: “In all thy works remember thy last end, and thou shalt never sin.” I read the book and found it a powerful tool to use on monthly silent retreats, often bringing a copy of the book with me on mountain or monastery retreat days. After Myztery released their debut self-titled album in 2005, we began to think about what our next album would be like. I shared with Cyndie, my girlfriend and bandmate, my idea of taking “the four last things” and making an album out of it and even a full-length video. -
