Record Store Day Order Form Record Store Day Order Form This document will stand in for you picking out records from our racks, beginning at 7am, Saturday, June 12th – the first RSD Drop of 2021. This document must be presented, in person, at the Dusty Groove south door (on Ashland), starting at 7am. Once you hand in your order form, pay, and receive your items, you can exit our north door. Everyone will stay in the order they lined up, and orders will be pulled in the same fashion – just as if you were in line, pulling the records yourself in the store. Hopefully, this will be a matter of minutes for the entire transaction. • Masks must be worn while in the store and while interacting with our staff. • Also, remember that all titles remaining inside will be online by noon – at dustygroove.com . • Ivan Lins: Um “Ator Móvel” Na MPB Dos Anos 1970
Abstract: The main subject of this paper is the production of songwriter Ivan Lins from the 1970s to the beginning of the 1980s. Throughout this period his career underwent significant changes, which bring about contradictions and conflicts, showing an artist’s search for his own ground, a process mediated by market relations. In his albums from this period, one notes a frequent shift in musical style and in the poetic contents of the lyrics, which reveal the way by which he adapted himself to the dynamics of cultural industry, as well as the political, ideological and economical transformations that took place in Brazil in the 1970s.

David Janssen and Edward Whitelock. 2009. Apocalypse Jukebox: The End of the World in American Popular Music. Berkeley: Soft Skull Press/Counterpoint LLC. Reviewed by David Gutkin While any attempt to characterize a nation and "a people" is bound to expire in dubious generalization, claims about the essence of the United States and constitution of the "American character" have often been marked by especially outlandish and totalizing rhetoric-by American and non-American writers alike, both affirmatively and critically. j One example is Jean Baudrillard's 1986 book America. Poised as the postmodern successor to Alexis de Tocqueville, Baudrillard, perceiving American culture simultaneously as pre-civilized (an old trope) and as the paradigm of hypermodern simulacral "spectrality," characterizes the nation as both "the only remaining primitive society" and as "a giant hologram."2 If representations of the United States from the last half-century are inflected by the post-World War II phase of American exceptionalism, this has affected not only imperial apologists and vulgar nationalists but even, residually, writers on the left, like Baudrillard. More generally, the United States has always been a strongly symbolic nation, whether imagined as the singular beacon of democracy or as the paradoxical no-place/no-face oflate capitalism. For this reason, critical studies of the American mythos are important, and, as Greil Marcus realized some decades ago, popular music serves as a good lens through which to view the agglomerated fragments of"America."3 Clearly indebted to Marcus, David Janssen and Edward Whitelock, profes sors of English at Gordon College and authors of Apocalypse Jukebox: The End of the World in American Popular Music, take as their entry point into the American imagination a perceived deep relationship between rock and apocalyptic thought.

  • Social Media to the Mainstream
1 SoundCloud Rap Narratives as Pop Star Narratives: From Social Media to the Mainstream Popular music meanings are dependent on the artist understood as a “total star text” (Dyer 1979). There has been much discussion in academia of how digital technology transforms formerly auteurist narratives of popular music creation into stories about collective authorship (Ahonen 2008, 107). Yet central fictions continue to involve the singular figure of the popular music star. Like new technologies before it, social media change how pop music stardom narratives are constructed. Narrative arcs (stories) and narrative forms (how those stories are told) have transformed alongside changes to the communication structures between artist and audience, and shifts in the authenticating mechanisms applied to pop stars. The transition of so-called SoundCloud rappers to the center of the American pop music landscape over the last five years epitomizes these changes. This study looks at how the narratives of SoundCloud rappers are constructed in the exchange between social media and traditional media publications; it assumes artist narratives to be constructed in this dialogic space. Social media events are articulated onto traditional structures of legitimation, and mainstream media canonize social media narratives. The results of this study indicate how artist narratives regularly unfold online, and how those patterns feed into the more familiar dramatic story arcs. Between January 2015 and June 2019, approximately 5–6% of unique artists that appeared on the Billboard Hot 100 could be categorized as “SoundCloud rappers.” This research focuses on a subset of these, artists who entered mainstream consciousness between 2016 and 2018, and can be broadly thought of as the second generation of SoundCloud rappers to make the transition to the mainstream.
