Ask any true hip-hop fan and he can tell you exactly where and when he first heard DOOM’s Operation: Doomsday. Against seeming insurmountable odds, the album - bootlegged mercilessly, floating in and out of print on various labels since it’s release in 1999 - gained mythical status amongst music aficionados of all backgrounds as one of the landmark releases of the past decade. Corey Died On The Battlefield On The Battlefront New Orleans is synonymous with music and Mardi Gras. The Wild Magnolias have both fronts covered. The roots of the Wild Magnolias go back to, at least, the 1950s as one of New Orleans most popular and colorful Indian “”. The Krewes fall under the guidance of a Chief, and Bo Dollis has been the Chief of the Wild Magnolias since the mid-60s. With a voice reminis- cent of Sam Cooke and the flamboyance you’d expect at any given Mardi Gras, Bo and the Wild Magnolias rose to great heights in the 70s in a reign that continues to this day. The Wild Magnolias run as a recording act started in 1970 with the “Handa Wanda” 45 for the Crescent City imprint. In addition to a traditional Mardi Gras percussion lineup featuring everything from drums to beer bottles, Bo and the Wild Magnolias pulled in some prominent local talent as backup including and . The cut became a Mardi Gras staple and lead to the French imprint Barclays (with distribution via Polygram) to sign the for this, the finest recording in the Wild Magnolias long and storied career. The album took Bo Dollis and the Wild Magnolias from a New Orleans phenomena to a global force with the lead single “Smoke My Peace Pipe (Smoke it Right)” appear- ing on the Billboard charts. The Magnolias have even had a lasting effect on the world of hip hop with “Corey Died On The Battlefield” and “(Somebody Got) Soul, Soul, Soul” being sampled by artists such as Schoolly D, , Geto Boys and the Jungle Brothers. It might be easy to think of Eden Rose as simply a first version of famed French progressive band Sandrose. Both bands had the same musicians; both existed at nearly the same moment in time (c. 1970). But Eden Rose is now seen, quite rightly, as something unique, a chimera from the misty past, a time during which the winds of change were blowing on the fixed universe of music. Rules were blown away, stagnant structures were swept aside, and musical conventions emancipated, this freshness and spontaneity the essence of a style that hadn’t yet been formalized. As for Eden Rose, they took off once they teamed up with guitarist extraordinaire Jean-Pierre Alarcen, who had worked with Jacques Dutronc and played in Le Systeme Crapoutchik. The result was this batch of psych-inspired, decidedly grooving, upbeat instrumental tracks, with wailing (at times) fuzzed-out guitar and distinguished Hammond organ aplenty, over driving beats. A unique sound, brilliant, bright, and from the first note to the last. And man, if my ears don’t deceive me, the main theme from ‘Walking In the Sea’ (before it spins off into Jimi Hendrix territory) sure sounds like a lovely jazzy riff on Serge Gainsbourg’s ‘Je t'aime... moi non plus,’ which had been released the year before this album hit the racks. Two bonus tracks are from the band’s only single that contained non-LP tracks. Booklet has the band’s story in English and French, and is printed on FSC recycled, chlorine-free, 100% post-consumer fiber paper manufactured using biogas energy.

“His sound is crazy – incredible album” DJ Spinna (U.S.A)

This is incredible. A nine-piece string section provides layered backgrounds to gentle Fender Rhodes pads, tootling , sensuous guitar and cooing vocals, with tunes alternating between spacey slow grooves and cinematic, Nouvelle Vague-ish landscapes. Guests include Ivan Lins and Azymuth, but the signature is clearly Verocai’s own. (Phil Johnson “Independent On Sunday”)

Due to a popular demand, Far Out present the vinyl version of this great album by . The album will feature brand new artwork as well as the 8 of the best tracks (mastered by John Dent) from the 11 track CD giving all of you vinyl heads a unique listening pleasure.

Featuring excellent compositions from Arthur with guest musicians including Azymuth, and a 17 piece string section, ‘Encore’ is the highly anticipated follow up to Arthur’s eponymous debut album from 1972.It sees Arthur joining the dots over 35 years to create a new classic of Brazilian music that, like his debut, combines Brazilian influences with his take on American soul and cinematic experimentation, and shows Arthur’s sound is as poignant now as it was in the 70s.

Following on from , Joyce and of course Azymuth , Arthur Verocai is the latest in a long-line of Brazilian musicians whose music is set to be introduced to a whole new legion of fans by Far Out . The story of ‘Encore’ of course begins with Joe Davis , Far Out’s head honcho who stumbled upon Arthur’s debut in a dusty record store in downtown Rio in the late 80s. At the time of its release in 1972 critics panned Arthur’s debut and both the album and artist subsequently vanished into obscurity. Fast forward to winter 2004 and Joe’s at the studio of Far Out Recording artists Harmonic 33 – aka production duo Mark ‘Troubleman’ Pritchard and Dave Brinkworth – playing them some of his favourite Brazilian albums. Dave recalls the moment Joe put on Arthur’s debut, “As soon as the needle hit the record and we heard the fantastic arrangements, songs and sounds, Arthur completely blew our minds”.

Three months later and Dave was in Brazil with Arthur Verocai, and the plans for what was to become ‘ Encore’ were being laid down. Produced by Dave, ‘Encore’ sees Arthur on incredible form, the 35 plus years between the recording of his debut and this the follow-up just melting away as Arthur picks up the (conductor’s) baton once again to create 11 epic tracks of stirring samba-soul and sublime cinematic movements that sees him creating a record to rival his debut.

The Skull Snaps evolved from an earlier R&B outfit known as The Diplomats, taking their name from a comment by Lloyd Price to the effect of “your music is so powerful it just cracks people’s skull, man,” a statement that was true in ’73 and remains truth to this day. Just as the group started to get spins and attention on the “It’s A New Day” single, the GSF imprint closed their doors and the Skull Snaps went on to languish in obscurity. Or, they would have if not for the beat laid down by drummer George Bragg that turned “It’s A New Day” into one of the most sampled cuts in history having been used by Eric B & Rakim, ODB, Digable Planets on through to DJ Shadow and The Prodigy. Here, “It’s A New Day” is backed with the less sampled (but perhaps you’ve heard it on Main Source’s “Just Hangin’ Out) “I Turn My Back On Love” presented for the first time ever on lavender 7” vinyl.
