Season after Pentecost - Psalm 150 July 9, 2017 Haven Lutheran Church Hagerstown MD Readings: John 4: 24-26; Psalm 150 “Living Doxology” Grace to you and peace from God - Father, Son, Holy Spirit. Amen A man was visiting a church for the first time. He was moved by something the pastor said in his sermon, so with a loud voice he shouted, ““Praise the Lord.” Hearing it, a well-meaning member leaned over and tapped him on the shoulder saying, “Sir, we don’t ‘praise the Lord’ here.’ To which another member leaned over and said, “Oh yes we do, we just do it all together when we sing the doxology.” When I attended my first Lutheran potluck supper, the pastor suggested we sing the doxology as our grace before the meal. I had no idea what he was talking about but everyone else seemed to. Together they sang: “Praise God from whom all blessings flow Praise him all creatures here below Praise him above ye heavenly hosts. Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Amen” I wondered where the words were so I could learn it. I wondered why these Lutherans were singing a song with a Latin word title — Doxology. The word doxology is derived from Latin but came down from Greek - doxo = glory/praise, logo - Word. If you look it up in the dictionary, it will say doxology is a “hymn of praise.” When we suggest singing THE Doxology, we are specifically referring to the hymn we just sang. That particular doxology was written by Anglican Bishop Thomas Ken in the late 1600s. -

Brentnall Introduction Augustine of Hippo (354-430), the great ‘Church Father’ from whose writings Luther and Calvin contributed so much to the Reformation, “never wrote what could be called a treatise on prayer.” (Thomas Hand) His nearest approach to an extended treatment of the subject - a letter to a wealthy noble widow who had sought his advice - merely delineates the kind of people we must be in order to pray acceptably, and develops a few valuable suggestions on prayer that are useful for the Christian’s journey towards the full enjoyment of God. His Expositions on the Psalms, though not specifically a study of prayer, throw much light on how Christ and His Church express their union and communion through prayer, and how believers may make the psalmists’ prayers their own. The Confessions weave in and out of prayer so much that they may be justly regarded as one prolonged prayer; yet they offer no direct teaching on the subject. For their part, the Sermons, Soliloquies, Treatises, Letters and Retractations cast up many valuable thoughts on prayer, not to mention some priceless gems in the form of particular prayers offered to God by Augustine himself; but they too offer no systematic treatment. In view of this absence, perhaps the most we can distill from the vast and varied array of available material is “not a system or method” of prayer, but “a general orientation with recurrent themes and characteristic emphases.” (Rebecca Weaver) What we can distill, however, may well revolutionize our whole view and practice of prayer. -

Ephesians 2 – Dead made alive: we had nothing to do with our salvation, it was a free gift. But Christ’s death did more that make us alive, it tore down every wall of division between Jew and Gentile. We all belong to the same nation, part of the same body, and comprise the same church. Ephesians 3 – Everything in Christ and all that He provides is available to Everyone. 2 Ephesians 3:1-7 For this reason I, Paul, the prisoner of Christ Jesus for you Gentiles— if indeed you 3 have heard of the dispensation of the grace of God which was given to me for you, how that by 4 revelation He made known to me the mystery (as I have briefly written already, by which, when you 5 read, you may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ), which in other ages was not made known to the sons of men, as it has now been revealed by the Spirit to His holy apostles and 6 prophets: that the Gentiles should be fellow heirs, of the same body, and partakers of His promise in 7 Christ through the gospel, of which I became a minister according to the gift of the grace of God given to me by the effective working of His power. A mystery is not something that is kept back from being explained, kept secret, or something to keep you guessing but instead it’s a truth that is waiting to be revealed. -

The Doxology to the Metrical Psalms
44 Church Service Society Annual The Doxology to the Metrical Psalms IN recent years an increasing number of congregations throughout the land have revived the Reformation practice of singing the Doxology to the metrical psalms. This is also, incidentally, the normal practice of the General Assem- bly of the Church of Scotland, at its annual meetings. By permission of the Minister of Greyfriars Kirk, Edinburgh, we reprint from the parish magazine the following explanatory note which appeared towards the end of last year : " For some months now in Greyfriars we have been following the old Scottish practice of concluding the portion of the Metrical Psalms sung in church, with the Doxology sung in the metre appropriate to the particular psalm. These doxologies or conclusions are printed in all the music editions of the Scottish Psalter, and are also found in our books " for the use of Visitors." Copies of a printed page of the seven doxologies can be obtained in the church porch for insertion in any of your own Bibles or Psalters. The purpose of the Doxology or Gloria Patri is really to turn the Hebrew Psalm into a Christian Hymn. The doxology has always been taken for granted in the singing or responsive reading (as we have had this summer at the Evening Services held in Lady Yester's Aisle) of the prose psalms : Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost ; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be : world without end. Amen. Surely it is equally appropriate to conclude a familiar and beloved metrical psalm such as : How lovely is thy dwelling-place, 0 Lord of hosts, to me ! The tabernacles of thy grace how pleasant, Lord they be ; with a devout ascription of glory and honour to the Triune God of our Christian Faith : To Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, the God whom we adore, Be glory, as it was, and is, and shall be evermore. -

religions Article Islam¯ and Genesis 17: A Study in Scriptural Intertextuality Khaleel Mohammed Department of Religious Studies, San Diego State University, San Diego, CA 92182-6062, USA; [email protected] Received: 25 August 2018; Accepted: 17 September 2018; Published: 28 September 2018 Abstract: Abraham Geiger’s 1833 essay launched a particular genre of research that posits foreign etymology for many terms in the Qur’an.¯ Whereas some work has been erudite, others have posited far-fetched concepts to the point where at least one author opines that Aramaic was the original language of the Qur’an.¯ Muslim exegetes have compounded the problem by seeking to interpret the Qur’an¯ on its own, without reference to other Abrahamic scriptures. I argue that Muhammad’s audience understood him clearly since he was using terms that had become part of the Arabic language long before his time. I examine three terms: islam,¯ iman,¯ and d¯ın, showing that the meaning of these words in the Qur’an¯ can be deciphered by reliance on context of usage and intertextuality. To this end, I refer to several verses of the Qur’an¯ as well as of the Hebrew Bible and Talmudic literature. A proper understanding of these words allows us to see Q3:19 and Q5:3 as pluralistic instead of the particularistic interpretation that most exegetes proffer. Specifically, the book promises to deliver information about how the word imn ‘Amen,’ as attested in classical Kmt ‘Black Nation/Land of the Blacks,’ persists in the contemporary Akan language. While under a steady hand this should be a simple enough thesis to substantiate, unfortunately, the authors’ obvious lack of grounding in historical linguistics, their lack of knowledge of mdw nTr ‘Hieroglyphs’ as well as their lack of understanding the morphology (word structure) of the Akan language all mar the analyses presented in the book. How could it be? Once this mystery is revealed, however, what else is the to do but praise God? This is where we find Paul. He has just explained the mystery of the gospel, and now he is going into a prayer for the believers—that they would fully understand this great mystery. Through this prayer we are drawn in with Paul to praise God for all he has done for us. And we cry out with Paul, that God would reveal this mystery to us more and more. -

This led them to an absorption with the Jewish creation myths in Genesis, which they obsessively reinterpreted to formulate allegorical explanations of how humans ended up trapped in the world of matter. The basic Gnostic story, which varied in details from teacher to teacher, was this: In the beginning there was an unknowable, immaterial, and invisible God, sometimes called the Father of All and sometimes by other names. “He” was neither male nor female, and was composed of an implicitly finite amount of a living nonphysical substance. Surrounding this God was a great empty region called the Pleroma (the fullness). Beyond the Pleroma lay empty space. The God acted to fill the Pleroma through a series of emanations, a squeezing off of small portions of his/its nonphysical energetic divine material. In most accounts there are thirty emanations in fifteen complementary pairs, each getting slightly less of the divine material and therefore being slightly weaker. The emanations are called Aeons (eternities) and are mostly named personifications in Greek of abstract ideas.
