    Mathematical Models for Cricket Team Selection Hamish Thorburn Dr Michael Forbes The University of Queensland 26/02/2015 1 1 Abstract An attempt was made to try and select the Australian Test Cricket Team for then-upcoming series against India in December-January 2014-2015. Data was collected pertaining to 37 Australian cricket players, relating to both recent form (the 12 months prior to commencement of the project) and career form across multiple formats of the game. The team was selected using a mixed-integer- programming (MIP) model, after processing the statistics collected to create usable parameters for the model. It was found that the team selected by the MIP model shared only 5 of the 11 players with the actual team selected by the Australian Board of Selectors to compete in the series. When altering parameters of the model, it was found that the batting diversity of the team could be doubled while only losing 0.008 of the available talent of selected players. The reduced costs were calculated to determine how close unselected players were to being selected, and what they would have to increase their batting/bowling averages to be considered for selection. Finally, we compared the ICC player ratings to our calculated batting and bowling indices, to try to determine the optimal weighting between the different statistics. It was found that batting average was most important in batting performance (but was more important in test matches than one-day matches) and that bowling average and economy were equally important in bowling performance. 2 Introduction 2.1 The Game of Cricket Cricket is a sport composing of opposing teams of 11 players each side.

Khaleel Ahmed, Deepak Chahar, Navdeep Saini look promising and India need to look after them so that they develop the way Bumrah has. These guys, with time and maturi- ty, will see Bumrah, Bhuvi, Shami as their role models and this will be a healthy sign for Indian fast bowling. Spinners like Rahul Chahar, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep, Chahal will also keep everyone on their toes. The batting department also has some exciting faces.     Australian Olympic Team – Modern Pentathlon ➢ Modern Pentathlon made its Olympic debut for men in 1912 at the Stockholm Games and for women at Sydney 2000. ➢ Australia have participated in Modern Pentathlon at every Games since Helsinki 1952 (men) and Sydney 2000 (women). • The first Australian male to compete in the Modern Pentathlon was Forbes Carlisle, a world-famous swimming coach who coached Australian Olympic champions before he became a modern pentathlete. The first Australian female to compete was Kitty Chiller, who was the Australian Olympic Team Chef de Mission at Rio 2016. • Australia has won one medal in Modern Pentathlon, with Chloe Esposito winning gold at Rio 2016. Peter Macken, a five-time Olympian, is the best placed Australian man finishing fourth at Tokyo 1964. ➢ The Modern Pentathlon competition in Tokyo will be the first time at an Olympic Games that all five disciplines will be showcased in the one stadium, with the dedicated Pentathlon Arena in Tokyo Stadium having a capacity of 50,000. ➢ The Fencing Ranking Round for men and women will be held on Thursday 6 August in Musashino Forest Sport Plaza, before the women’s competition (Swimming, Fencing Bonus Round, Riding, Laser-Run) is held on Friday 7 August in Tokyo Stadium. The men’s competition follows the same format on Saturday 8 August. ➢ Modern Pentathlon consists of five sports in four events: • Fencing – a ranking round in which athletes compete against all other competitors in one-minute round robin bouts and the bonus elimination round, where each victory achieved adds a point to their score from the ranking round.

Rotary too has done this all over the world. Support with facilities like providing food and rations to the needy, making masks available, appreciating the efforts of the frontline workers, helping in setting up of COVID care facilities to name a few. Amongst all these, there is one noteworthy activity taken up in Chennai by the Rotary Club of Madras. Let’s have a look at a report about it and appreciate it.
