THURSDAY 6TH DECEMBER THE VARSITY GATHERING 2018 THE VARSITY GATHERINGEnjoy the outstanding entertainment of The Varsity Gathering in the Rose Suite in the South Stand at Twickenham. With spectacular views of the action on the pitch from top class seats and the great networking opportunities from meeting up with friends and alumni from Oxford and Cambridge Universities, this is THE place to be at the Varsity Match. The Rose Suite is open for The Varsity Gathering from 10:30 till 18:30, with the following activities: • 30th Anniversary of the Women’s Varsity Match celebration moment with former female Oxford and Cambridge players, with free pastries and Prosecco prior to the Women’s Match • Pay bar open all day • Speeches from former Home Nations internationals, British and Irish Lions Varsity Match players, Simon Halliday (Oxford) and Eddie Butler (Cambridge) • Jazz band playing from 16:45 Price: £45 per person including Category 1 match ticket and access to The Varsity Gathering 4 The Varsity Match 2018 SPEAKERS Simon Halliday Simon played for Oxford University from 1979 till 1981, winning one and losing two Varsity matches. He went on to play for Bath Rugby Club 170 times including 5 successive Cup Finals. He moved to Harlequins in 1990, before retiring in 1992 due to long-term injuries. Simon played in the centre for England alongside Will Carling, before being replaced by Jeremy Guscott. Simon is now the Chairman of European Professional Club Rugby, whose decisions impact on the lives of rugby players across Europe. Eddie Butler Eddie played for Cambridge at number eight from 1976 to 1978, and captained the famous Pontypool team of the 1980s. He played 16 times for Wales and was captain in 6 of those matches. Eddie played in the 1983 British Lions tour of New Zealand, and was a Barbarian. Eddie is well recognised as a BBC sports commentator, as well as being a journalist for the Observer and for the Guardian.
