Regulations effective Ice-in 2007 - March 31, 2008

www.mefi shwildlife.com A MESSAGE FROM THE GOVERNOR I want to thank you for choosing to ice fi sh in Maine. Maine is well known for its wealth of natural resources. Those of us who live and visit Maine recognize the value of Maine’s waterways. Where else but Maine can you fi sh in over 6,000 lakes and ponds and 32,000 miles of rivers and streams for gamefi sh such as brook trout, landlocked and small- mouth bass.

Over 260,000 people fi sh in Maine each year, creating an economic impact of nearly $300 million annually. These anglers support over $100 million of wages and salaries, and generate nearly $200 million in retail sales. They also reel in nearly $20 million in tax revenue to the state.

Your fi shing license dollars not only are a boon to the state’s economy, but it is your license dollars that fund the Department of Inland fi sher- ies and Wildlife. These dollars are used to enhance fi shing opportuni- ties, raise and stock fi sh, protect habitat and ensure and create access to our waters. Your license dollars are in investment in Maine.

Thank you for purchasing a Maine fi shing license this year, and invest- ing in Maine’s outdoor future.

John E. Baldacci Governor HOW TO USE THIS BOOK

• Determine the town and county of the body of water you will be fi shing. • Read the instructions under the county heading, they are not all the same. • Look for the body of water you want to fi sh. • Read all the codes relating to that water. • An S code refers to Special Regulations listed on page 6. • Most brooks, streams, and rivers are closed to ice fi shing. Any that are open are listed.

1 Special Regulations (S-Codes): page 6 A MESSAGE FROM THE COMMISSIONER Thank you for choosing to ice fi sh in Maine. What an array of choices now await you — there are thousands of lakes and ponds throughout the state, each uniquely a part of Maine.

Before going ice fi shing this year, please famil- iarize yourself with the rules and regulations on the water that you wish to fi sh. We tailor laws to many individual waters, not only to protect a re- source, but also to improve it. Through surveys, we have learned that on some waters, people want to try for a trophy fi sh, and on other waters, anglers may only be interested in the total number of fi sh they catch.

When you purchase a license, funds from the license sale are used to improve and protect the fi sheries throughout the state. It helps pay for stocking, research, surveys, and enforcement, all of which are designed to enhance our fi sheries.

We want to hear what you think about fi shing in Maine. This year, when you are done fi shing in Maine, please log on to www.trip- tracks.com. At this site, you can record data about your fi shing trips which will be used by our biologists to better manage the state’s fi sheries. TripTracks is a more modern, user-friendly way for us to gather information on fi shing throughout the state.

Your comments assist us in the management of many of Maine’s fa- vorite fi shing waters, so I hope you take the time to let us know what you may have caught and how many hours you have spent enjoying Maine while fi shing.

Enjoy the privileges that come with purchasing a Maine Fishing License. Maine is a wonderful state where the changes in seasons only means changes in opportunities.

Greetings to all Maine ice anglers.

Winter is again upon us and instead of dreading the cold and snow, as ice fi shermen and women we can’t wait for enough ice and the opening of the season to head out for a day on Maine’s many frozen lakes and ponds. Whether you are a serious angler or go ice fi sh- ing as a casual pastime, ice fi shing is a great activity for the winter months.

Remember Safety First! Take necessary precautions by check- ing local ice conditions before you venture out on any of our frozen waters. Local bait shops are a good source of this information as well as your local game warden. Also, please help uphold the good name of ice fi shermen and women by keeping the ice clean of gar- bage and picking up litter others might have left behind. At the end of the season, it is also very important to keep on top of the respon- sibility of removing your ice shack before the ice becomes too thin to make it safe and practical to do so.

Remember that it is potentially harmful and illegal to release unused baitfi sh into Maine’s waters. This law does apply during the ice fi sh- ing season. Unused bait may be frozen and used as dead bait, left on the ice for wildlife for forage, or thrown away.

On behalf of the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wild- life and Maine’s game wardens, Thank You for the support you’ve already given us. We also respectfully ask that you continue to work with us to help safeguard the outdoor sporting pursuits we all enjoy by complying with all ice fi shing laws and regulations; and reporting ice fi shing violations to the local warden.

Good ice fi shing to you and your family!

Maine Warden Service

Maine’s freshwater fi shery resource consists of nearly 6,000 lakes and ponds greater than one acre in size and over 32,000 miles of rivers and streams. People of ALL ages may fi sh in any of these waters that are open to fi shing. However, certain wa- ters, which we have chosen to call “Kids Waters” are governed by special regulations that give youngsters either exclusive or special access to the fi shery. To see which waters fall under this regulation, go to the county listing and look for a body of water with an S-24 code.

IDENTIFICATION OF LANDLOCKED SALMON AND BROWN TROUT The more obvious difference between landlocked salmon and brown trout may be found in the head and tail areas. Knowing them may help the angler release a fi sh more quickly when certain creel and size restrictions apply. On landlocked salmon, the vomerine teeth are small and ar- ranged in a single row along the vomerine shaft, few to none on vomerine head. On brown trout, the vomerine teeth are well-developed on both vomerine head and shaft, arranged in a zig-zag row on shaft. On landlocked salmon, the caudal fi n may be slightly forked and on the brown trout, the caudal fi n is square and unforked.

45 Special Regulations (S-Codes): page 6 JUDGING ICE CONDITIONS “Thick and blue, tried and true. Thin and crispy, way too risky.” The ice traveler should look for bluish ice that is at least 4 to 6 inches thick, in order to support people and their gear. Even if the weather has been below freezing for several days, don’t guess about ice thickness. Check ice in several places. Use an auger, spud, or axe to make a test hole beginning at shore and continuing as you go out.

If ice at the shoreline is cracked or squishy, stay off. Don’t go on the ice during thaws. Watch out for thin, clear, or honeycomb-shaped ice. Dark snow and dark ice are other signs of weak spots.

Choose small bodies of water. Rivers and lakes are prone to wind and wave action, which can break up ice quickly. Avoid areas with currents, around bridges, and pressure ridges. In the wintertime, outdoor enthusiasts frequently need to know how thick the ice is “Wait for a long cold spell, and whether it is safe to walk across it. The then test the ice thoroughly.” American Pulpwood Association has published a handy reference chart that gives a good rule- of-thumb for pond and lake ice thickness. What if I break through the ice? If you break through the ice, don’t panic. This table is for clear, blue ice on lakes. That’s what the illegal introduction of exotic species brings to Maine’s waters.

Some thoughtless individuals are attempting to destroy the future of Maine’s native fi sheries. These non-sportsmen illegally stock the type of fi sh they prefer to catch, without regard for the environmental havoc they infl ict on the resource. Illegal stocking selfi shly denies the people of Maine the right to decide what is best for our waters.

Please help fi ght this serious problem. • It is illegal to transport live fi sh without a permit. • It is illegal to dump unused baitfi sh into any waterway. • There is a $10,000 fi ne for a conviction of illegal stocking. • Always keep your ears and eyes open for those who are committing these senseless acts.

To report information about an illegal introduction please call: 1-800-ALERT-US (253-7887) - In-State (207) 287-6057 - Out-of-State
