Works Recorded in the Harvard College Library Loan Register for 1762-1764 © David R. Whitesell, 2009 This list supplements my article, “The Harvard College Library and Its Users, 1762-1764: Reassessing the Relevance of Colonial American College Libraries,” Proceedings of the American Antiquarian Society, v. 118, pt. 2 (2009): 339-405. Recorded here are 681 works belonging to the Harvard College Library as of January 1764: 585 entries represent works loaned to students, faculty, and other borrowers between September 1762 and January 1764; an additional 96 entries (marked with an asterisk) represent loans made as far back as 1742 but not returned as of September 1762. The list has been compiled from entries in the Harvard College Library loan register for 1762-1764,1 with a few supplementary entries (marked with a • ) gleaned from “A List of the Books Belonging to the late Library of Harvard College that were in the Hands of the Overseers, Governors & Students of the College & escap’d the flames [i.e. the January 24, 1764 fire].”2 Author, title, edition, place of publication, publisher, publication date, and the number of volumes have been identified to the extent possible per the evidence provided by the 1723-1735 printed library catalogue,3 the several hundred volumes from the pre-1764 Harvard College Library still extant at Harvard and elsewhere,4 and various printed bibliographies and online bibliographical databases, such as the English Short Title Catalogue (ESTC).5 Entries are arranged in alphabetical order by author or, if no author, by title. Preceding each entry is the Harvard College Library shelf mark in use in 1764. The form of an author’s name is that established in the Library of Congress Name Authority File.6 In the 118 instances where the exact edition or issue is not certain, the entry is marked with a + , the number of potential editions or issues is noted in brackets, and the date range of these editions or issues is given (also in brackets) in the imprint. Works bound with others are noted; these are cross referenced if they fall outside the alphabetical sequence. When multiple copies of an edition are recorded as having been owned by the Harvard College Library and borrowed between 1762 and 1764, these are noted as “Another copy,” with shelf mark provided. 1 “Library Account Book,” Harvard University Archives, UA III.50.60VT. 2 Harvard University Archives, UA III.50.27.64VT. 3 The 1723 catalogue and its two supplements to 1735 are reproduced in facsimile and indexed in The Printed Catalogues of the Harvard College Library 1723-1790, ed. W. H. Bond and Hugh Amory (Boston: Colonial Society of Massachusetts, 1996). 4 I have completed a draft catalogue describing all volumes still extant in the Harvard University Libraries, together with those volumes known to have come into the possession of other libraries. 5 http://estc.bl.uk/ 6 http://authorities.loc.gov/ Key: * Pre-September 1762 loan only, or loan date not known + Work or edition/issue not certain • Work not listed in the loan register 1 [shelf mark:] 2.5.11 Abbot, Robert, 1560-1618.
