Aztec Code is a two-dimensional matrix symbology containing dark and light square data

A two-dimensional imaging device such as a CCD camera is necessary to scan the symbology. Aztec Code can encode all 8-bit values (0-127 ASCII and 128-255 ISO 8859-1, Latin Alphabet No.1) and performs Reed Solomon Error Correction based on user-selectable percentages (5% to 95%). Aztec Code is used for small item marking applications using a wide variety of printing and marking technologies.

Note: Aztec Code implementation in Barcode Professional products does not support encoding for FNC1, ECI nor Structured Appended Sequence. The only optional feature in Aztec Code specification that Barcode Professional supports is “Aztec Runes” which is a series of 256 small machine-readable marks compatible with Aztec Code, available for special applications.

Codabar

Codabar was developed in 1972 by Pitney Bowes, Inc. It is a discrete, self-checking symbology that may encode 16 different characters, plus an additional four start/stop characters. This symbology is used by U.S. blood banks, photo labs, and on FedEx airbills. Since Codabar is self-checking, there is no established checksum digit. This symbology starts and finishes with one of four possible characters A, B, C, or D.

Code 11

Code 11 was developed as a high-density numeric-only symbology. The symbology is discrete and is able to encode the numbers 0 through 9, the dash symbol (-), and start/stop characters. It is used primarily in labeling telecommunications equipment. Code 11 is not terribly secure in that printing imperfections can quite easily convert one character into another valid character. Data integrity is obtained by using one, or sometimes two, check characters.

Code 128

Code 128 is a linear bar code symbology capable of encoding the full 128-character ASCII character set and extended character sets. This Symbology includes a checksum digit for verification, and the barcode may also be verified character-by-character verifying the parity of each data byte. It has been widely implemented in many applications where a relatively large amount of data must be encoded in a relatively small amount of space.

Code 128 Code Sets Code Set A (or Chars Set A) includes all of the standard upper case U.S. alphanumeric keyboard characters and punctuation characters together with the control characters, (i.e. characters with ASCII values from 0 to 95 inclusive), and seven special characters. Code Set B (or Chars Set B) includes all of the standard upper case alphanumeric keyboard characters and punctuation characters together with the lower case alphabetic characters (i.e. characters with ASCII values from 32 to 127 inclusive), and seven special characters. Code Set C (or Chars Set C) includes the set of 100 digit pairs from 00 to 99 inclusive, as well as three special characters. This allows numeric data to be encoded as two data digits per symbol character, at effectively twice the density of standard data.

Code 39

Code 39, the first alpha-numeric symbology to be developed, is still widely used-especially in non-retail environments. It is suitable for encoding general purpose alphanumeric data. Code 39 is a discrete, variable-length symbology. It is self-checking in that a single print defect cannot transpose one character into another valid character. It is the standard barcode used by the United States Department of Defense, and is also used by the Health Industry Bar Code Council (HIBCC).

The Code 49 bar code is a multiple-row bar code that can encode the full ASCII character set below ASCII 128. Up to 49 alphanumeric characters or 81 numeric characters can be encoded. Data Matrix

DataMatrix is a two-dimensional (2D) barcode symbology which can store from 1 to about 2,000 characters. DataMatrix ECC200 version supports advanced encoding error checking and correction algorithms (reed-solomon). Those algorithms allow the recognition of barcodes that are up to 60% damaged. DataMatrix is being used to encode product and serial number information on electrical rating plates; to mark of surgical instruments in Japan; to identify lenses, circuit boards, and other items during manufacturing. Barcode Professional supports all DataMatrix Formats and the data represented in the symbol can be compressed using one of following algorithms. EAN-13, based upon the UPC-A standard, was implemented by the International Article Numbering Association (EAN) in Europe. EAN-13 is a superset of UPC-A. This means that any software or hardware capable of reading an EAN-13 symbol will automatically be able to read an UPC-A symbol. QR Code and Micro QR Code

QR Code is a kind of 2-D (two-dimensional) symbology developed by Denso Wave (a division of Denso Corporation at the time) and released in 1994 with the primary aim of being a symbol that is easily interpreted by scanner equipment.

QR Code is capable of handling all types of data, such as numeric and alphabetic characters, Kanji, Kana, Hiragana, symbols, binary, and control codes.

The symbol versions of QR Code range from Version 1 to Version 40. Each version has a different module configuration or number of modules (the module refers to the black and white dots that make up QR Code). "Module configuration" refers to the number of modules contained in a symbol, commencing with Version 1 (21 x 21 modules) up to Version 40 (177 x 177 modules). Each higher version number comprises 4 additional modules per side. Each QR Code symbol version has the maximum data capacity according to the amount of data, character type and error correction level. In other words, as the amount of data increases, more modules are required to comprise QR Code, resulting in larger QR Code symbols.

QR Code has error correction capability to restore data if the code is dirty or damaged. Four error correction levels are available for users to choose according to the operating environment. Raising this level improves error correction capability but also increases the amount of data QR Code size. To select error correction level, various factors such as the operating environment and QR Code size need to be considered. Level Q or H may be selected for factory environment where QR Code gets dirty, whereas Level L may be selected for clean environment with the large amount of data. Typically, Level M (15%) is most frequently selected. The QR Code error correction feature is implemented by adding a Reed-Solomon Code to the original data.
