Brough and Shatton Parish Statement (Draft) Brough and Shatton Parish Statement (draft) The parish of Brough and Shatton lies to the south of the A618 Hope Valley road, east of Hope and Bradwell. Shatton is a relatively modern residential settlement, just over a mile directly east of Brough, accessed via the A6187 (Hope Road). Three farms sit at the end of Shatton Lane which imply the settlement had its roots in agriculture. Brough is located less than a mile from Bradwell to the southwest Photo needed here and Hope to the northwest. It is a linear settlement which lies south of the River Noe. Brough has a number of businesses located in industrial units to the south of the settlement and a large agricultural merchant adjacent to the River Noe. Brough and Shatton are located within the ‘valley farms and villages’ character type of the Eastern Moors landscape area (LSAP 2009).     PEAK DISTRICT NATIONAL PARK: HOUSING STATISTICS 2006/2007 1.1 This report details planning permissions for, and development of, dwellings in the Peak National Park from 1 April 1991 to 31 March 2007. The data is presented by parish for each of the local authorities in the Park, followed by the summary tables for the Park as a whole. The tables are split into 2 sections. 1.2 Considerable effort has been made to ensure its accuracy but direct year to year comparison with previous reports should not be made because adjustments are made to previous year’s records as necessary to reflect changes notified in the status of permissions. 1.3 Where there is more than one permission relating to the same site, only one permission, involving the larger number of dwellings, is counted. 1.4 For the purposes of monitoring against the Adopted Structure Plan housing policies, the figures for holiday accommodation should be excluded. 1.5 Appendices A to E give details of trends in dwelling applications, commitments and completions. Castleton and Hope Historical Societies July 2013 Castleton Historical Society and Hope Historical Society Abstract Angela Darlington The period covered by this document extends over nearly 600 years from the Norman Conquest to the English Civil War. In focusing on the lot of the common people of Castleton and Hope, it provides a backcloth in terms of the land that they occupied, and some of the most important influences in their day-to-day lives. They raised their families in unpredictable circumstances affected by the vagaries of climate and disease. In what was already a difficult existence, they also had to contend with the constraints of forest rule and the onerous burden of taxation. The church and the lead-mining industry both played a central part in these two North Derbyshire communities. The scene is set with William the Conqueror’s great Domesday survey and a discussion of the differences between the two villages in terms of land areas, taxable value and administration as described for 1066 and 1086. At the time of the Norman Conquest Hope was a larger and much more important settlement than Castleton, but within 20 years of the Conquest was apparently declining in economic status whilst Castleton was growing. Hopedale within the Royal Forest of Peak was the home of Hope and Castleton villages and so Forest Law was central to the people that lived and worked there.

    614 HIGH PEAK HUNDRED. in 1725, was discovered in 1781, quite perfect and petrified, retaining the flesh-colour as when entombed. The Vicarage is a neat house west of the church. The Wesleyan Methodists have a chapel erected in 1807, at a cost of £300, with sittings for 260 persons; about one half are free. The Endowed school is now taught on the National plan; Wm. Cresswell, master. The Girls’ National school is an old thatched building near the church; Mrs. E. Blackshaw, mistress. The Roman Catholics have a chapel in a rural situation, and there are ruins of ancient Catholic chapels at Over Padley and North Lees. A Fair is held on the first Friday after Old Michaelmas day, and if it falls on Friday, the Friday after; and the Feast on the Sunday before the fair. The Hall, a handsome mansion in the village, was rebuilt in 1844; it is the property and seat of John Spencer Ashton Shuttleworth, Esq. Camp Green, a little E. of the Church, is supposed to be the site of a Danish camp. This manor, Hereseige, was, at Domesday survey, the property of Ralph Fitzhubert. In the reign of Henry III. it belonged to the family of De Hathersage, whose coheiresses brought it to Goushill and Longford. In the reign of Henry VI. Goushill’s moiety belonged to the family of of Thorp, with remainder to Robert Eyre and his heirs. Sir Nicholas Longford died seized of the other moiety in 1481. The ancestors of the Duke of Devonshire purchased it of the family of Pegge, in 1705.
