Life is like a rowboat. As you’re “rowing” through life, you can look back and see where you’ve been. In my more than 55 years in the work- Out Back force, I can look back and see the many and varied jobs I’ve held. Some part- Carolyn Plotts time and some way more than full-time. My parents taught me how to work, and I can still hear my mother’s words ring- ing in my ears, “You do a day’s work for a day’s pay. And then you do a little bit more.” In high school I worked at the Herald offi ce after classes. My mother went back to work when I started high school and I followed her. In college I waited tables for my lunch and worked afternoons at a daily newspaper in Winfi eld doing all sorts of things from writing society news to proofreading to dealing with the paper boys. Then came marriage, the Vietnam war, babies, moves around the country and I didn’t work outside the home for several years. Oh, there was a little part- time job at Sears then a job at a big discount store in the receiving department. Certainly no career. Later, when the kids were both in school, I drove a school bus, cleaned houses, worked at Benefi cial Finance, back at the Herald again, waited tables, the March of Dimes, KFNF Radio, sold internet websites, cooked at the Cardinal Cafe, worked at The Norton Telegram and here I am back at The Oberlin Herald. I’ve come full-circle. The one thing all jobs have in common is their consistency. If you’re hired to dig ditches, you can be assured that you will be doing one thing every day – digging ditches. It won’t change much unless you distinguish yourself some way and get a promotion to fi lling ditches. Then you get to fi ll ditches all day. A job is a job. All this was prompted by a conversation with a younger friend who manages a local grain elevator. He told me about an interview he had with a 20-year old “job-hopper.” The young man came in to talk about a job. When my manager friend asked him about previous employment, the young man listed several jobs he had held during the past year. When the manager asked him why he had quit his last job the young man answered, “Well, I just did the same thing every day.” To which the manager said, “That’s what we do here. We empty grain trucks and we fi ll railroad cars. And then we do it all over again.” A job is a job. Along with contests, the chapter has been busy in the community by helping with concessions at the fair and the Jake Durham wrestling tournament. It’s not all work for the chapter members, we do have some fun too. We started the year off this summer by taking an Officer Retreat trip to Denver. This retreat was for the 2019-2020 officers and full of fun Norton FFA Chapter celebrates National FFA Week and memories. They went white water rafting, shopping, and to a Colorado Rockies Baseball game. The retreat National FFA Week is only one of the many activities the Norton FFA Chapter has participated in this year. was a great way for Miss Howsden and the officers to get to know each other, along with planning out the chapter We have had students compete at contests such as; showing at the county fair this summer, land judging, dairy expectations and activities for the new year. This year we had 12 students take a trip to the National Western cattle judging, food science and dairy products, vet science, leadership school, job interview, ag sales, and ag Stock Show in Denver, CO. These 12 individuals were selected by who earned the most points, in the chapter, mechanics. Our chapter has been very successful at many of the contests we have participated in. All the new during the first semester. The point system is a representation of how active a member is. They are rewarded freshmen participated in the Greenhand Contest where they took a knowledge test and started down the road with points for the various activities they participate in. The chapter also gets together every month for our chapter meetings. Here members get together to discuss chapter events and concerns. After the official meeting, members do activities such as dodgeball, board games, or ag olympics to name a few. Chapter members sold fruit, meat, and candies this fall as a fundraiser for the chapter. This was such a success this year and we would like to thank all those who purchased from a chapter member and assisted in supporting the chapter. Also, thank you to everyone for the donations we received as well. This spring is full of more opportunities for the chapter members to be active and compete in contests. Looking ahead we have poultry judging, livestock and horse judging, agronomy and horticulture contest, and the FFA State Contest and State Convention in May. We also have many exciting activities for chapter members such as our monthly chapter meetings. At one of our chapter meetings we invite the Junior High to come join us and get a first look at what FFA is and all the fun we have. Also, officer interviews for next year's officers, the chapter banquet, our chapter lock-in, and Drive a Tractor to School Day. Drive a Tractor to School Day will be in honor and remembrance of Thunder Linner and takes place on the anniversary of his passing. Our Chapter lock-in will take place in April. Students will spend the night at the school playing games, learning how to country swing dance, watching movies, and lots more. This night is our last hoorah before the year is over and a great way for chapter members to bond and hang out. We would like to thank everyone for their support and help this year. The chapter is very grateful for the time, money, and support the community gives to us every year. Northern Valley FFA members having a busy/fun year The 2019-2020 school year has been a busy and fun experience for the Northern Valley FFA Chapter. Members of the chapter have planned and participated in several activities this year so far. Some of the district level activities have been Dairy Cattle Judging, Food Science and Technology, Vet Science, Leadership School, Greenhand Conference, and Job Interview Contest. The goal of our chapter through these types of activities is to learn real-life skills that will benefit the students in their futures. The chapter took seven members to the National FFA Convention and Expo held in Indianapolis, Indiana in October. In addition to attending the convention, the students also were able to tour several agriculture and landmark attractions. These included; Grandma Horner’s factory, The Gateway Arch and Museum, and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Our group also was part of a National Day of Service and volunteered to assist with sorting and packing food at Gleaner’s Food Bank. Most recently, the chapter volunteered at the Kansas Day Celebration in Logan. The officer team prepared information to present to the guests at the event and they all successfully delivered their presentations to around 375 elementary students who attended. Some topics discussed were wind energy usage in the OFFICERS – 2019-2020 Northern Valley Officer Team – Pictured from left are, Jayden Speer past, present, and future, weighing items on an old fashioned bar scale, and antique horse equipment.
