Look Good, Sound Better
THE 2017 NAMM SHOW | GUITARS & ACCESSORIES LOOK GOOD, SOUND BETTER BY ALEX HARRELL Deco designs make a comeback as intage revivals are nothing new in this industry. But what sets this year’s round manufacturers mix old favorites from the of resurrections apart from the rest is the recurring theme of art deco-inspired designs Dirty ’30s with 21st century technology from the 1920s and ’30s. V“The original guitars from the 1920s weren’t that great,” said Jim LaPlaca, The Music Link’s director of marketing. “So, we took that styling, and we’re building a great instrument.” LaPlaca is referring to Recording King’s Series 7 line. Recording King was originally a 1930s Montgomery Ward brand; TML brought back its depression-era acoustic guitars 10 years ago. The Series 7 line features Single O body styles with distinctive checkerboard styling, cross lap bracing, and comes in a Tobacco Sunburst finish with art deco-inspired stenciling. Ken Peveler Sales’ Ken Peveler and Levy’s Leathers’ Harvey Levy and Glen Booth “It’s not just having that cool styling but having a really good, quality instrument, too,” he said. Washburn released a remake of the Solo Deluxe — a company model from 1939. The Solo Deluxe features a fully torrified top and bracing to create a vintage tone, according to Gil Soucy, USM Music’s vice president and general manager. “We changed the playability of it because the older ones tend to have a real fat neck, so this one is very playable,” he said. Epiphone Guitars is also making beloved acoustics from the 1930s and modifying them with 21st century innovations to make them sound just as good as they look. -

OCEANIA Oceania Is a Geographic Region That Is Made up of Thousands of Islands Throughout the Central and South Pacific Ocean
1 Gallery Guide St. Louis, A Musical Gateway: OCEANIA Oceania is a geographic region that is made up of thousands of islands throughout the Central and South Pacific Ocean. It spans both the eastern and western hemispheres and includes the three island regions of Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesia and the continent of Australia. This exhibit is the third in a series that celebrates St. Louis’ multicultural heritage communities. It features rare and beautiful instruments of the Far East and Oceania drawn from the Hartenberger World Music Collection of Historical Instruments Dr. Aurelia & Jeff Hartenberger, Karrie Bopp, Dr. Jaclyn Hartenberger and Kevin Hartenberger. 2 Oceania The tension and vitality of the people in the Oceania region of the world is reflected their rich musical traditions and in the skillful construction of their musical instruments. These instruments were made to accompany the telling of stories, and the singing and chanting of songs, as it is from these sources of knowledge that history of the old traditions and cultures were told and preserved. In the Melanesia region of Papua New Guinea and eastern Indonesia you will see the fancifully carved flutes, slit drums, the distinctive handheld hourglass drums, and a full-body fiber mask from the Asmat people of western New Guinea. Polynesian instruments include the many hand tapping gourd drums, flutes, shell trumpets and of course the Hawaiian ukuleles. From New Zealand are the Maori instruments that today, have all but disappeared. Micronesia includes the Palau Island ceremonial Triton shell trumpet, and from Australia, is the aboriginal people’s iconic didgeridoo accompanied by traditional clap sticks. -
Extending Generalizations About the Disposition of Meaningful
ASSOCIATION FOR CONSUMER RESEARCH Labovitz School of Business & Economics, University of Minnesota Duluth, 11 E. Superior Street, Suite 210, Duluth, MN 55802 Extending Generalizations About the Disposition of Meaningful Possessions to Buyers With a Shared Self John Lastovicka, Arizona State University USA Karen Fernandez, University of Auckland NZ We extend Lastovicka and Fernandez’ (2005) naturalistic study of garage sales to an on-line setting, and offer prescriptions for both buyers and sellers of meaningful possessions. It has been argued that it is in buyers’best interests to appear uncommitted in their enthusiasm about products when negotiating with a seller. In contrast, our field research with on-line auction buyers suggests the opposite. In the case of a consumer disposing of a meaningful possession through selling—when a shared self is sensed between the buyer and the seller—our results show such disclosure is a benefit to the buyer. How High the Moon” –Les Paul & Mary Ford (1951) Added to the National Registry: 2002 Essay by Dave Hunter (Guest Post)*
“How High The Moon” –Les Paul & Mary Ford (1951) Added to the National Registry: 2002 Essay by Dave Hunter (guest post)* Les Paul and Mary Ford Original label American popular culture was bopping along at a fast pace by the mid to late 1940s, with the World War over and both industry and entertainment on the home front booming from an influx of new energy and inspiration. The decade proved a hotbed of innovation as the arts and the artisans that equipped them joined forces to advance the means by which their diversions were delivered to the masses. Popular music embraced such progress even more than most realms of popular culture, and no work better exhibits the confluence of musical and technical artistry than Les Paul & Mary Ford’s 1951 recording of “How High The Moon.” A massive hit in its day, it was also a milestone in the evolution of popular music, and one that set a course that we are still navigating. Perhaps he is best known today for the Gibson electric guitar that carries his name, but Les Paul was one of popular music’s biggest stars of the early part of the mid-20th century, and he and Mary Ford (to whom he was married for 15 years) formed a superstar pairing to rival any for hits and popular recognition. Paul and Ford met in 1946— introduced by Gene Autry, as legend has it, for whom she was working as a back-up singer—and through the late ’40s developed a close relationship that was both personal and professional, marrying in 1949. -
The Les Paul Foundation and Julien's Auctions Announce
For Immediate Release: THE LES PAUL FOUNDATION AND JULIEN’S AUCTIONS ANNOUNCE AN UNPRECEDENTED AUCTION EVENT CELEBRATING THE LEGACY OF LES PAUL JULIEN’S AUCTIONS BEVERLY HILLS TO PRESENT AN ARRAY OF RARE AND UNIQUE GUITARS, EQUIPMENT AND PERSONAL EFFECTS FROM THE ESTATE OF THE FATHER OF THE ELECTRIC GUITAR, LES PAUL June 8-9, 2012 Beverly Hills, California – March 26, 2012 – Julien’s Auctions, the world’s premier entertainment and celebrity estate auction house and the Les Paul Foundation have partnered for an auction of extraordinary property and collection of guitars, equipment and musical artifacts from the legendary musician, engineer and inventor Les Paul. The auction event will take place on June 8-9, 2012 in honor of what would have been Paul’s 97th birthday. (June 9, 2012). Les Paul, born Lester Polfuss in Waukesha, Wisconsin in 1915, was on his way to making his mark on the history of 20th Century music at an early age. He was born with an inquisitive streak that he described as, “…curiosity and I got a double dose of it. I’ve never stopped trying to figure out what makes things work or how to make things work better.” It was this curiosity that spurred his lifelong quest to find the perfect sound in his instruments, recordings and performances. His efforts produced one of the first solid-body electric guitars, which went on to become one of the most widely played and recognized guitars in the world, the Gibson Les Paul. Paul not only revolutionized the sound of the electric guitar, but also the technology behind modern day sound recording.
