This week, in a ceremony attended by family, friends and Columbia County Sheriff’s Office personnel, Sheriff Mark Hunter promoted Cpl. Martin Lee to the rank of sergeant. Lee has been with CCSO since 2011 and will remain in the CCSO Criminal Investigations Division as the agency’s internal affairs inspector. Following the promotion, Hunter recognized two other CCSO members for awards. Deputy Aaron Belfry was given the Lifesaving Medal for his actions on Nov. 3, when he gave CPR to a victim, ultimately saving their life. Sgt. Pete Spurlock was awarded the Commendation Medal for his actions on Oct. 31, when his swift and decisive actions ended a carjacking and hostage situation. “We would like to congratulate Sgt. Lee on his promotion and Deputy Belfry and Sgt. Spurlock on their awards,” Hunter said. “All have COURTESY CCSO brought credit on themselves and the Columbia County Sheriff Mark Hunter (second from left) stands with Sgt. ANOTHER VIEW The hard life of Mr. Soros

ife can be almost good anywhere if you’re a billionaire. George Soros, the Hungarian-born L billionaire who once shorted the British pound to bring down a conservative government in Britain, has been on a rant that the government in his native Hungary has grown so oppressive that life there is more miserable than it was during the occupation by the Soviet Union, which was the ultimate socialist experiment. Mr. Soros probably thinks life in modern Hungary, with free speech and free elections that don’t always go the Soros way, is as oppressive as Donald Trump’s America. He says Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban “exploits and oppresses those who are in opposition. In my judgment, the regime now oppresses people more that during the Soviet occupation.” If so, life would be very tough for everybody. During the Soviet occupation Hungarians frequent- ly vanished in the middle of the night, carried away in long black cars to the headquarters of the secret police.
